Here is the first spot from the first chase of my first train ever along the old Missabe over the next four days during last spring's visit to the Iron Range. Southbound Canadian National train U718, an empty limestone train returning to Proctor Yard from Cleveland-Cliffs Minorca Mine near Virginia, consists of old school DMIR quad ore hoppers led by CN SD40-2Ws 5338 and 5349 both built by GMDD in London in 1980. They are seen here approaching the Hwy 133 crossing south of unincorporated Payne near MP 39.3 on modern day CN's North Division Missabe Sub mainline.

This is an area that needs no introduction to even the most casual fan as the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway is in a word legendary. I won't bore you with pages of history as I couldn't do the road or region justice anyway. It simply needs to be experienced for oneself. But I will direct you to two resources. Absolutely check out the fabulous historical information here: www.missabe.com/

And for a fabulously well written overview of modern CN operations find yourself a copy of the April 2023 edition of Railfan and Railroad right now! shop.whiteriverproductions.com/products/rfr-202304

A Thursday Walk sorta kinda. Much of my Thursday was spent in a car, but I also walked a bit near here...so this counts under Utata Rules as a Thursday Walk.

Chinese flowers, original is China red flowers, but I preferred to be classic B&W:)

Thank you to share your imagination thru artwork from camera...

Here's a simple shot from 11 years ago as an unidentified MBCR/MBTA Providence Line train heads outbound Down Main 3 of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor at about MP 219.5 rolling thru READ interlocking. Read controls a set of crossovers allowing trains on any of the three mains to access the start of the Franklin Branch which officially begins here and climbs the ramp track to the old New Haven Midland Division on to Franklin. Additionally the other track diverging to the left of the Franklin Line is now just an engineering spur but once was the New Haven's Dedham Branch that most importantly reached the large yard and system shop complex less than a mile away. The Dedham Branch had passenger service until 1967 and a bit of the old shops yard was used by Amtrak into the 1990s. Conrail continued to serve freight customers in East Dedham on about a mile of the branch through the 1980s but now all the rails are gone.

MBTA 1075 leading this train is an EMD F40PH-2C built new in Mar. 1998. She can still be seen here in 2022 albeit in a new livery having been rebuilt into an F40PH-3C by MPI/Wabtec in 2018.

Bringing up the rear of the 63 car Q425 seen before this is a single ES44AC-H. The train has momentarily entered the town of Becket after crossing the West Branch of the Westfield River near MP 131.5 of CSXT's Berkshire Sub. The rear end of the westbound train is seen passing through the first of the two large cuts on opposing curves that make up the iconic location known to generations of fans as the Twin Ledges. These rock cuts date to 1911-1912 the year the New York Central embarked on massive modernization of the Boston and Albany route they had acquired less than a dozen years prior. Highlights of the multi year project in addition to the new cuts and bridges include Worcester's phenomenal Union Station, the grade separation project in that city and the boring of a second state line tunnel.

I was able to find a peephole through the weeds/grass so I could capture this mushroom. Also, I needed the flash to illuminate the underside of the cap. The rim of the cap is very thin and becomes white when backlit.

Last year, my friend Sarah gave me a crystal ball to play with, as she'd had some fun with her own. It's currently living as an ornament on the kitchen window, but feeling a bit creative recently, I took a photo of our garden with it!

This is a cropped photo of a view I really liked. I cropped it to remove some unsightly bins and signs.

A Providence and Worcester Railroad extra crew has 79 loaded tank cars of ethanol and two spacers headed south destined for the Shell tank farm at the port of Providence, Rhode Island. PW 3909 (GE B39-8E originally blt. Dec. 1987 as LMX 8535) and sisters 3910, 3904, 3903 are leaning into the curve with the heavy train approaching the Riverdale Street crossing at about MP 29.5. The siding in the foreground serves Riverdale Mills, a maker of wire mesh products and inventor of the coated welded wire lobster trap. While Riverdale is only a bit over 40 years old, it is housed in a repurposed mill made of stone and brick whose oldest portion was constructed in 1852 and made scythes and then bayonets during the Civil War until being expanded after 1865 and changed into a textile mill which closed after 1923. It had long since been vacant when it was purchased in 1979 and refurbished as the manufacturing site of the upstart wire mesh business.
