Recently on a weekend, we decided to make a surprise road trip to Morro Bay as a break from the pressures of our work. The last couple of times we visited the area, it was as impromptu guides for visiting family, so the photographer in me was excited to see and spend some time photographing the few locations I wanted to revisit. One of them was Morro Rock. Previously, I photographed the rock from the beach, but this time I wanted to do something different. A few years ago, while visiting Morro Beach and walking north along the shoreline, we realized that part of the dunes near the beach is cordoned off with restricted access to allow the endangered western snowy plover to nest. It was the first time I realized that Morro Bay is an important wildlife area, so one of my goals was to take a few images that captured the wild flavor of this world-famous tourist attraction.

I had a rough idea of this image but had real doubts about making it happen. However, I knew my best chance of getting wildlife in my image was during sunrise, so we woke up super early and headed to the beach despite the blistering cold. No birds were on the shore for the longest time I was at the beach. A few I saw were flying away, but luck was on my side that day, and slowly they started to come in. I waited for them to get comfortable with me and to get into position. I used a short tele focal length, so I was not worried about scaring them off. It was a lot of waiting, hunched down in the sand for them to get in front of the rock and hoping that my poor back didn’t give out. Thankfully the birds walked into position while foraging in the surf, and I got the image I had in my mind. Only I was way better than I had imagined.

Another shot from the Tioga Pass road at Yosemite National Park. By the time we reached the location the cloud cover over the sky was pretty sparse. And we were about an hour away from sunset. I was really impressed by the clarity of t hater and the shape of the clouds and the surrounding mountain peaks. The light was pretty dim and the mosquitoes fierce but I managed about three shots here and coupled with the Singh Ray polarizing filter the water gave me nice reflections.

I really liked the dead wood in the foreground and wanted to get close to it so had to slide down through a pretty narrow path with about $5k worth of gear till I reached the base and managed a nice compo. I did use the big stopper here for some shots but forgot to cover my eyepiece and managed to get some nasty purple flares. Hopefully some other day I will be able to return. Thanks a lot for visiting and your encouraging words.

“Such is the difference between an object seen through a warm, soft, and moist air and a cold, dry, hard one. Such is the genialness of nature that the trees appear to have put out feelers by which the senses apprehend them more tenderly. I do not know that the woods are ever more beautiful, or affect me more.”

- - Henry David Thoreau March 10, 1859

"It's time I should be thankful,

For all that I have got,

Instead of bitching and complaining,

Of all that I have not.

I just forgot,

That there are people with the blues,

Who are living on the sidewalk,

And are sleeping int their shoes,

They are the clues. . . . '

- - John Stewart "Midnight of the World"

Last year, we visited the LA Arboretum a few times to photograph the incredible birds that frequently visit the park. While we were returning to the car, a large peacock landed right in front of us. It was a bit surprising, but soon a crowd gathered. I worried that the crowd would scare the peacock away, but it stayed, began to fan its tail, and put on a display. As I took my camera out of my backpack, I kept an eye on the background. Since this was all happening in the main entrance area of the arboretum, it wasn't easy to find a decent background. After circling the bird at a distance, I finally settled into a position, waiting for the bird to strike a good pose. I waited for a while on my knees, but eventually, it moved to a good spot and suddenly raised its head while lifting its tail. Before its fan fully opened and blocked my view, I managed to get a couple of shots. This one was my favorite of the bunch.

While visiting sand dunes in the past, I have always felt that the quote about them being slow-moving waves is absolutely true. I have tried photographing the dunes to resemble the waves but never got the results I imagined. On our last trip to Mesquite dunes, I used a 100-400mm telephoto lens as a challenge. I quickly gave up trying to stitch panoramas and started to focus on isolating sand formations. Using the maximum focal length of 400mm gave some incredible images, including a few that genuinely evoked the resemblance to waves often found in choppy seas.

Oh I knew immediately when I saw that quote it would be perfect for this image!

Happy perfect purple Saturday to all.

I've missed having time to play around with textures and do some uploading.

That darn work gets in the way!!

So on this photo I finally got a chance to try Isabelle's new actions. I used her Soulful Inspire "soothe" action.

Then I used 2 textures from Shana Rae in the Florabella collection of course.

Little blue book on color burn and soft light, and Reverie (cool) on hard light.

I could make 100 different combinations with these beautiful actions and textures, and have a terrible time choosing when to stop and what to upload!!

This was finally my choice for today.

The Old Forest

In these days during the Easter holidays I had the time to process a new work. A work from a couple of years ago. A beautiful spring morning with mist and a gentle rain I spent walking and wandering searching for some peace

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived"

“It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.”

“I am grateful for what I am and have.

My thanksgiving is perpetual.

It is surprising how contented one can be

with nothing definite - only a sense of existence.

Well, anything for variety.

I am ready to try this

for the next ten thousand years, and exhaust it.

How sweet to think of

my extremities well charred,

and my intellectual part too,

so that there is no danger of worm

or rot for a long while.

My breath is sweet to me.

O how I laugh when I think

of my vague indefinite riches.

No run on my bank can drain it,

for my wealth is not possession

but enjoyment.”

Another panorama shot from the beautiful Trillium Lake. This one is made stitching together about 16 shots. I love how absolutely still the water for this shot, believe me with amount of ducks in the water that was a rarity. I also glad how the clouds came out in this shot and how they form a nice clam shell with the shoreline.

Thanks for visiting, hope you enjoy this shot..

My second post from Point Cabrillo light station. This lighthouse was not part of our initial plans when we made the trip. But after the first day we realized how far Point Arena is from our campground we were forced to look for alternatives near Fort Bragg, and by total accident, we saw a picture of this location, and as soon as I realized there was a lighthouse close to our campground, the plan was decided.

When we got to the light station, I was a bit surprised how photogenic this little lighthouse was; it could be shot from north, south, and east. I posted a shot earlier which was from the north; this shot is more from the south-west of the light station. The fog coming in from the ocean diffused the sunset nicely and gave some beautiful colors in the sky, so I decided to include the cliffs to the south of the light station to provide the image with a bit of depth and to emphasize the diminutive size of the lighthouse.

“I frequently tramped eight or ten miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech-tree, or a yellow birch, or an old acquaintance among the pines.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Do years die on December 31st? Or, do they become obsolete and end up in some wrecking yard? Or perhaps, they just wander off to a quiet place –like Thoreau– to contemplate?

Talking about contemplation, did you do any of that about this outgoing year? I haven’t. I won’t. I contemplate and reflect on my moments, not my years. Reflecting on a year brings out my personal potpourri of Rashomon effects… that is, depending on the dimness of the moment of contemplation, the bygone year appears anything from being productive to utterly asphyxiating. Such a wide spectrum of thoughts is useless to distill reflections. So, I reflect instead on moments. And in doing so, I realize that there were moments of all kinds, but only the purest and the kindest have schlepped me through the year like a flowing rivulet carries a fallen leaf. Many of those moments were right here on Flickr, in the august company of your trompe-l'œil creations that teleported me away from my mundane to your wonderland and/or your kindest and concinnate words that gave my wings a feather or two. For that, you my Flickr friends, have my solemn gratitude.

For the incoming new year, let me wish you googols of happiness and fulfilment. Also, I wish you more of sanity, tolerance, and empathy. And above all, let me wish you unwavering resilience. Like the little plant above, let us grow roots in our volcanic a'a lava and celebrate life in glorious colors despite all the surrounding shards and gloom.

A self portrait from a nice walk together with my mother-in-law last Sunday.

This Sunday I've spent most of the time indoors- rehearsing, singing and working on a photography assignment.

(I also just found out that I won the weekly prize today, on a photo competition on national TV's weather forecast- with a photo of a silent harbour during sunrise. The prize is lots of really nice and really comfy wool clothes ♡)
