A good look at the Great Thick-knee, also called the Great Stone-curlew. It is mainly nocturnal or crepuscular like other Stone-curlews, but can frequently be seen foraging during the day, moving slowly and deliberately, with occasional short runs. The face has a striking black and white pattern, and the bill is black with a yellow base. The eyes are bright yellow and the legs a duller greenish-yellow. It has a massive seven cm. bill with the lower mandible having a sharp angle giving it an upturned appearance.

What a difference stacking makes! I tried using AutoStakkert for once (sorry Registax!) using the drizzle option and the results are brilliant.

thick, creamy celery soup of celery, parsnip, potato, onion and fresh coriander

plenty of vegetables were used in this recipe. that's why i cooked in two saucepans. the cooked contents of both saucepans were decanted into the large preserving pan, mixed together and ladled into the boxes to freeze. much of what i buy is from the markets. yesterday at whitechapel market a bowl of 3 bunches of coriander was £1

celery and parsnip cooked in a large saucepan, then blended

potato and onion cooked in a large saucepan, then blended

both pans of vegetables including the cooking water decanted into large preserving pan

a chopped bunch of fresh coriander added

(season during this stage or season just before being plated to eat)

stirred to mix all the ingredients

finally celery soup ladled into the boxes ready for the freezer, to be eaten as and when

i add milk and/or extra virgin olive oil either in the preliminary cooking (not this time) or later when each portion is reheated ready to eat, just to keep upping the flavour :)

when reheating i add more cooked potato and blend. this restores the creamy consistency of the soup which can be lost once frozen

all cooking was done on the hob on a low heat, 2 and less, from beginning to end.

i'd heard an energy saving tip from a bbc radio 2 listener who had phoned in to a programme on rising energy costs. he had noticed it was cheaper if he cooked on the hob throughout on low rather than medium or high, making sure the lid is on the pan, apart from the occasional stir.

now i've a smart meter installed www.britishgas.co.uk/smart-home/smart-meters.html monitoring energy use i thought i'd give it a go and found it to be a good tip.

(i suppose it's a bit like driving a car: driving fast burns up the fuel, driving slow lessens fuel consumption but we reach the destination)

if i have the hob on high, the smart meter dial shoots up to the orange/red and stays there - expensive - but on low the dial remains in the green - low cost - only occasionally for a few seconds each time, going to the orange/red

it does mean i have to plan ahead to give myself time to cook in this way but i'm managing and enjoying the challenge :)

ps i'm not recommending any of these cookery adventures. they suit my taste. photographing to encourage myself to eat more healthily

www.flickr.com/groups/cooking_is_my_hobby/ helps to gather ideas and encourages me to continue with healthy eating by learning from others if you're interested in cooking, sometimes or a lot, or enjoy the cooking of others, you're always welcome ...

These slices were cut from a beef shank muscle which is found at the central part of the calf.

The beef shank muscles in thick slices are used in a classic Italian dish, Osso Bucco.

In Chinese cooking, the shank muscles are cut into thin slices and dipped briefly in boiling water or soup. It is eaten with a variety of sauces.

I just got back from a wonderful visit to Costa Rica with a great group. It was nice to see some of my Costa Rican friends again and enjoy lots of pretty birds. We started off the trip with a bang seeing many exciting birds within a couple of hours of arriving in the country. You know it is going to be a great trip when one of the first things you see is a pair of Jabiru! I will save that photo for a little later. We wrapped up our first day with this interesting creature, the Double-striped Thick-knee. This bird has had a special place in my heart ever since I saw my first one in Mexico. I’m not sure what it is about this species but I just find them to be so interesting looking.

Along with The Crowns at Boallack , the Towenroath Shaft Engine House is one of the most photographed enginehouses of the mining areas of Cornwall .

Perched half way down the cliff , it is quite a sight to see .

Wheal Coates tin mine opened in 1802 and worked until 1889. The image of the Towanroath Shaft engine house, famous on postcards, calendars, and on the telly represents for many the serene beauty of the north Cornish coast. In reality this industrial landscape holds a harsh and austere history.

The life of a Cornish miner was tough.

Working deep underground in cramped and stifling conditions meant that miners were thought of as worn out and old by the time they were 40. The air in the mine was thick with powder smoke, dust and fumes from rock blasting that miners often coughed up black phlegm. Many suffered with bronchitis, silicosis, TB and rheumatism. Accidents caused by explosions, falling, rock falls, drowning and entanglement in machinery were a real danger and took many lives.

Woman were employed as Bal maidens, wielding hammers and crushing copper ore into smaller fragments. By the early nineteenth century over 7000 children were working in Cornish mines, initially above ground doing menial tasks, but when they were twelve they joined their fathers underground.

At its peak Cornish mining employed upwards of 30,000 people. In the mid nineteenth century the industry began to decline, and in 1875 over 10,000 miners left Cornwall to find work overseas. The skills and experience of Cornish mining spread across the world. They also took the pasty with them.

There are over 160 places, across six continents, where Cornish mine workers took their skills, technology and traditions; a truly global heritage. Cornwall and west Devon’s mining landscape, shaped during a period of intense industrial activity, is testimony to one of the greatest periods of economic, technological and social development Britain has ever known.

From 1700 to 1914, the metal mining industry played a vital role in transforming our way of life. It provided essential raw materials to feed the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and pioneered technological developments that helped shape the society we live in today. For example, Richard Trevithick’s advances in steam engine technology – originally motivated by the need to pump water out of mines – ultimately enabled the development of steam trains, changing the world forever through the mass movement of people and goods.

World Heritage

On 13 July 2006 select mining landscapes across Cornwall and West Devon were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, placing Cornish mining heritage on a par with international treasures like Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.

I will be doing a series of lemur images. Lemurs are endemic to the island and can only be found there. 101 species and subspecies of lemurs have been recognized.

Verreaux's sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi), or the white sifaka, is a medium-sized primate in one of the lemur families, the Indriidae. It lives in Madagascar and can be found in a variety of habitats from rainforest to western Madagascar dry deciduous forests and dry and spiny forests.

Its fur is thick and silky and generally white with brown on the sides, top of the head, and on the arms. Like all sifakas, it has a long tail that it uses as a balance when leaping from tree to tree. However, its body is so highly adapted to an arboreal existence, on the ground its only means of locomotion is hopping. The species lives in small troops which forage for food.

Four subspecies of this lemur are described. Many things are unknown about Verreaux's sifaka, their lifespan in the wild has not been approximated, but in captivity, they generally live to up to 18 years old. – Wikipedia

GBRf 66764 escapes the thick cloud hanging over East Anglia as it leads the 6E88 Middleton Towers to Goole Glassworks sand train. With a promising forecast across the Fens (bright skies from mid morning onwards), a final trip for 2022 was planned on the winter solstice. Clearly the weather forecasters had already left for Christmas as heavy rain and cloud dominated the weather until nearly 3pm! Sunshine finally appeared here at Oldeamere with minutes to go before this working. However, the sun started dipping again at just the wrong moment, creating this heavily cropped version.
