which looked almost asenticing as Kracsfalo. A large house stood at thetop of a court which was open towards the road, and a young man was walking across it. 1 hailedhim and asked him to help us. He told us thehouse belonged to the Notary, and that he himselfwas Vice-Notary, or Clerk. The Notary had goneaway for a few days, but the Clerk thought that wemight possibly be able to arrange to have mealswith him and his family if we could find roomssomewhere else to sleep in. He took us up a rough stony lane to the littleschool-house—which was unused, as it was holiday-time—and went on himself for the Greek priest, who had the keys. In the end it was arrangedthat we should rent the place, furnished with beds, etc., provided anyone could be found to cook forus, or if we could arrange by letter to board withthe Notary. We had still a level drive of twenty miles beforeus—to Maramaros Sziget, where we intended tosleep for the night—and had not proceeded far on A SHEPHERD-BOY OF FELSOBANYA

For a time it was terrible. Noshelter was at hand, and before we reached the firstmiserable inn on the road we were wet through, the bottom of the cart resembled a leaking boat, and the driver looked very much like a drownedrat. It was a miserable cartload that drew upbefore the principal hotel in Maramaros Sziget thatevening, and went dripping through the place totheir beds! The next day a railway journey of a few hourstook us—none the worse for our wetting—back tocomfortable quarters at the Bishops Palace. During that second visit we made the acquaint-ance of a number of young men whose love ofEngland and English literature had induced themto form themselves into a small club for the studyof our language. Up, up, up! Enjoy the route and scenery while you are climbing and watch your steps, don't rush it. It's worth every sweat of the long climb up to the peak. Beautiful.

From the Mark Hopkins website:

"In 1939 hotel owner George D. Smith created a sensation at the Mark Hopkins Hotel when he converted the 11-room penthouse on the hotel's 19th floor into a glass-walled cocktail lounge featuring a 360-degree view of San Francisco. This became known as the Top of the Mark.

Although Smith later told friends he wasn't sure that people would ride an elevator 19 stories just to enjoy a drink and the view, the Top of the Mark was an immediate hit after it opened May 11, 1939. That year, San Franciscans and visitors alike flocked there to view the twinkling lights of the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. The Top of the Mark soared even as the shadows of a world war loomed.

After the Second World War broke out, theTop of the Mark was a favorite spot for Pacific-bound servicemen to enjoy their last liberty before shipping out. As the ships left the Golden Gate, anxious wives and sweethearts often gathered in the Northwest corner to watch the departure, earning that section the nickname 'Weepers' Corner.'

When the servicemen returned to San Francisco, they often came back to the Top of the Mark and asked the bartender for their unit's 'squadron bottle.' Once the serviceman signed his name on the label, he could drink from the bottle for free. There was only one catch: the man who took the last drink was required to replace the bottle.

But how did the Top of The Mark acquire its distinctive name? According to San Francisco columnist Herb Caen, Smith told friends, 'I don't know what to call the top of the Mark.' 'That's it,' they told him. 'What's it?' Smith replied. 'Top Of the Mark.' And that's how the 19th floor lounge got its name."

Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan.

The genus Delias is the largest of the Pieridae, andthere are currently 278 species known, being found from Kashmir, throughAsia to New Caledonia, with new discoveries nearly every year.

This species is found in two subspecies in Thailand. Thesubspecies found on Samui is D. hyparete metarete, and is the southernform, found on peninsular Thailand and the Malay peninsular. (Thenorthern form, D. hyparete indica has more yellow on the hindwingunderside, and the black markings on the upperside are lighter).

This is one of only two Delias species found so far onthe island, and it is quite unmistakeable. In common with nearly all members of this genus, the upperside is predominately white, whilst the underside is the morecolourful. The female is darkerthan the male, and both sexes have the veins marked in black. Thespecies tends to keep to lower altitudes, and prefers to fly around thetops of flowering bushes and trees, being seen primarily in openwoodland and often nearby gardens.

The butterfly is most often seen in the early part ofthe day. During the heat of mid day, they can usually be foundsheltering in shade under trees to escape the direct heat of the sun.

Very rarely, the red markings on the undersides arereplaced by yellow.

The Top is a very old-school joint, and IMHO the finest steakhouse in Columbus. A venerable east side institution along with the now razed (sigh) Kahiki.
