The Abbaye de Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (or Abbaye de Gellon) is a Benedictine Abbey founded in the year 804, sitting now in the center of the little village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, beside the Hérault river valley. Entrance into the abbey (free) is via an ancient but nondescript door giving on to the very busy main square of the the village.

The Abbey de Gellone, the Hérault Gorge and the nearby Pont du Diable make up a UNESCO World Heritage Super Site.

Church interior of Saint Guilhem-leInside, the Abbaye de Gellone has a church with magnificent, tall pillars, a lovely old organ, some medieval rooms, a cloister and a small museum.

Cloister side with sloping ceiling, A couple of the arched side galleries of the cloister are nice, but much of the cloisters and the original sculptures now reside in The Cloisters Museum in New York City (USA).

The part of the cloister that remains here is, on the north and west sides, is the first part constructed, in the 11th century. The east and south galleries were built in 1205 and included sculptures. Upper galleries were added around 1300.

Most of the cloisters were were pulled down at the beginning of the 20th century, and the cloister sculptures were sold in 1906, ending up at The Cloisters in New York City.

Beautiful organ pipes in the SaintThe organ was built in 1782-1789 but not finished, although playable. The organ's completion was stopped by the French Revolution. In 1804 it was planned to transfer the organ to Notre-Dame-des-Table in Montpellier, but someone substituted the name of Saint-Thibéry in place of St-Guilhem-le-Désert. [We don't suppose the people of Saint-Thibéry are too pleased about that.]

Restoration began in 1968, and continued in the1970's and 80's. Final restoration occurred beginning in 2000 and continued until 2014.

Reflecting pool, cloister garden of theThe Museum of the Abbaye de Gellone is located inside the main abbey, in the Salle du Réfectoire des Moines. Entry to the Abbey is free, but there is a small charge of €2.50 (in 2014) for the museum. Both the abbey and the museum are open year-round.

Great show. The music was brilliant and with a great light show. Of course Johnny Marr on guitar was amazing. They played a great set including many tracks from Infected. What a shame Matt Johnson doesn't do many live shows.

On Saturday, July 7, 2018 I travelled to Dublin in the Republic of Ireland to see one of my musical icons from the 80's and 90's, James George Thirlwell (a.k.a. J.G. Thirlwell, Clint Ruin and Foetus). In particular it was the Australian's work as "Foetus" that resonated with me, forever changing my tastes in music. I have in my collection almost everthing that he produced at that stage of his career from 1981's single "OKFM" (OK Freeze Mother) until 2013's "Soak" (on both LP and CD). Though popularly known as simply "Foetus", Jim released albums under diverse variations of the name, including: Foetus Art Terrorism; Foetus Über Frisco; Foetus Corruptus; Foetus In Excelsis Corruptus Deluxe; Foetus Inc.; Foetus Interruptus; Foetus Over Frisco; Foetus Under Glass; Philip and His Foetus Vibrations; Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel; The Foetus All-Nude Revue; The Foetus of Excellence; The Foetus Symphony Orchestra; and You've Got Foetus On Your Breath.

I was incredibly privileged to see Foetus live on September 2, 1996 in a venue in Prague called "Bunkr" which was formerly a Cold War nuclear fall-out shelter. And what a mind-blowing gig that was! In Dublin, Thirlwell was the supporting act for another one of my favourite groups from the 80's and 90's, Matt Johnson and "The The" who were on their much anticipated "2018 Comeback Special." Johnson and Thirwell are long-time friends and colleagues.

The gig was at the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin and featured Thirlwell's latest project called "Xordox." For this iteration of Xordox, he was joined by long-time musical collaborator Simon Hanes (of Tredici Bacci) on additional keyboards. My old connection from Pretoria (South Africa), Helgard de Barros was there with me right at the front of the stage. These unedited photos capture some of what we experienced on that fine evening in Ireland.
