With both the special wraps in the spot you don’t want them to be, the Eastbound MISLAU freight, with a ballast train tacked onto the head end, drops downgrade through the sweeping curve at Austin, MT.
A misty morning, l was quite happy with that! these wonderful endangered beings! l always wish them well!
They dehorn the animals, which apparently is not painful, but it's taking time and of course funds!
Shall I sew them to my bonnet?
They are flat, about an inch across (each) but the photo makes them look three-dimensional.
Another food flat lay. I was trying to make it a bit fun but it feels a bit stiff to me. Happy Thursday!
They are fighting over a crab you see in the water. None of them knew what to do with it and never even cracked it open. The gulls did that for them.
Can you see them?
It's been so... long since I've had a fence post (not much of one in here either but believe me, it's there).
HFF and Happy Friday everyone!
When I first saw this picture, I thought of one of my favorite childhood books The Make-Believe Parade... do any of you know it?

Street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
Captured in September 2019 during an exercise I gave to my Street Photography Workshop for them to look for different angles and perspectives as we walked around. Of course I ensured that the person begging in the shot was suitably anonymised so that the image is for narrative and is not in any way exploitative.
I'm thinking of the millions of people currently displaced across Ukraine. Over 2 million displaced out of the country but countless millions more ran out of their homes to another part of the country, all while being under artillery and rocket fire. I cannot begin to imagine the depths of pain, despair and loss that they are feeling.
I'm also thinking of those displaced and homeless throughout the United Kingdom as a result of poverty driven by the cost of living crisis and Government policy over the past decade. My own energy prices have risen 129% overnight.
I'm also thinking of those displaced out of their homes, steadings and traditional nomadic routes in Ethiopia right now. Years and years of lower than average rainfall are now leading to a famine of the levels not seen since 1985. The building humanitarian disaster is expected to be worse than that thanks, in no small part, to the climate emergency.
We all need water, food and shelter - these basics that are essential for life should be a given in our modern world.
Today I am thinking of those who have been or are being displaced from their homes. I wish I could help more.
In the hornbill species - about 9 of them in India in total - the male courts the female by offering her berries and figs. The female accepts it - sometimes from more than one - before she finally chooses a partner. And then the birds would find a tree hollow to set up their nest. This poor Malabar Grey Hornbill couldn't find a partner nearby, and he waited more than 30 mins with the fig in his mouth. We grabbed all the shots we wanted, but the poor chap didn't move.
These are endemic species in the Malabar region - a large forest hosting an amazing diversity of wildlife in the South Western part of India. These are the most common hornbills in the region and are well known for their cacophonic cackling and laughing calls which are quite loud and sound totally crazy.
Just like other hornbills, the female gets into a tree hollow and the male seals the entrance with mud or cement like material from her droppings. Only a small aperture big enough for the beak is left open. The male delivers food to the chicks and female for 90 days and drops it through the small hole. When the male comes with the food, he taps the tree to signal the female that he has arrived. If anything happens to the male, either the female breaks the seal or as few naturalists pointed out, she and the chicks sometimes die of starvation inside the hollow. We briefly observed that nest sealing behaviour in action and it was amazing.

“But at times I wondered if I had not come a long way to find that what I really sought was something I left behind”
~ Thomas West
In truth, this umbrella really belongs to a story involving a portrait of a Chinese couple, but that's a rather boring tale. I'd rather ponder this image as a metaphor for needful things left behind. Perhaps a reminder during this Christmas season to treasure the tresures we already have. Too often we leave them behind in the cold.

Road Trip 2013 - Day 15 - June 25 - Pecos National Historical Park
...At the end of the park loop we explored the ruins of an old Spanish Mission. A bit of a bittersweet feeling. One one hand, it looked to be a wonderful structure back in the day, on the other, it was quite an intrusion to the lives of the Cicuye village people ...
Road Trip: Pecos National Historical Park
... and photographically, everything remained gorgeous. Deep blue sky, wonderful white clouds floating around, by then lots of warm light from the afternoon sun traveling downward towards the horizon. I found several angles on the Mission that I liked a lot and am sharing only one of them here. However, a place like this offers never-ending opportunities!

This species is definitely in my top five. That combination of yellow cap and chestnut sides is just amazing. I feel very fortunate to be able to see them all summer too as they breed near my home.
I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves.
And even more I revere them when they stand alone

This beauty is not meant to be taken lightly. Give them to a loved one when you feel it most. “Give Them Freely”. You’ll receive love in return as love isn’t to be kept to oneself. Gratitude and Kindness are are rewards to be shared much like Love.
A long distance migratory bird species from Europe / Parts of Asia and some of them winter in South East Asia / Parts of Australia. They are migrants in our region and seen in good numbers around March / April and when they are making their journey to their destinations.
The past couple of years we are not seeing them much, but these year maybe around 20 of them are now seen in a lake just 20 mins from my place. There are huge flocks of other waders birds still around and the place is perfect for photography with the light exactly behind the photographer in the mornings. Another 2 weeks and almost all those waders will disappear and start their return migration.
Thanks in advance for your views, likes and feedback.
“Call them what you want. Garden gnomes. Lawn ornaments. Little evil outdoor statuary hell-bent on world domination. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that, right now, they're hiding in plain sight, pretending to be symbols of merriment and good will.”
― Chuck Sambuchino, How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack: Defend Yourself When the Lawn Warriors Strike
You hear them all over Iceland as they pop up with sharp criesand they circle their territory with "drumming" sounds. Once they begin their descent, their downward swoop causes this "drumming" sound as the wind vibrates their outer tail feathers. They are difficult to see on the ground as they are secretive and shy. Early this morning, my luck changed as this sleepy snipe stayed long enough for this image. The background is a field of yellow buttercups.
Always a delight to spot colourful waxcaps and even better to capture underside shots. Where possible, I prefer not to pick them and use my Pentax point and shoot, pressed down into the substrate, but sometimes this is not possible.
Been A hella long few weeks, Happy belated holidays folks.

I can make you this, baby, I can make you that
I can take you there, but baby, you won't make it back
Growing sick of this and I don't wanna make you sad
Do I make you scared? Baby, won't you take me back?
Down another lonely road, I go
Just another lonely road, oh
I just wanna know, I just gotta know
Do you wanna go? Baby, we could go

"Behavior at Nest-leaving.
When the nestlings are ready to fly, the slightest disturbance sends them out of the nest. As one juvenile starts to leave, the impulse apparently spreads rapidly to the others. So quickly do they pop out of the nest, that one has the feeling that the nest has suddenly exploded. There is an incessant medley of juvenal trills. The juveniles fly a little awkwardly and to a lower level when they leave the nest. They scatter in all directions, often alighting in the grass, uttering the trill all the while. The parents immediately become excited, uttering a rapid succession of alarm notes as they dash from one young bird to another in an evident effort to protect them and to get them together. This is quite a task, for the juveniles fly as far as twenty-five yards from the nest tree.
The parents spend from fifteen minutes to half an hour gathering the scattered family in low bushes or in a small tree. In the meantime the young birds try their wings and trill, but the parents are far too busy to feed them. Feeding starts as soon as the brood is in one place. Often three or four young perch along a limb in a fluffy row with feathers interlaced, in the manner of adult roosting birds. The more precocious members of the brood flutter clumsily from one twig to another and seem to find it difficult to maintain a firm foothold and a good balance. Fifteen minutes after nest leaving one juvenile was observed making several attempts to secure insects from the limb on which it was perched. It was very clumsy and almost lost its balance each time. The juveniles of one family interspersed normal location notes with the juvenal trill. Half an hour after nest-leaving the young start following the parents in their search for food, begging with trills as they go. They frequently wipe the bill off on a twig, in the manner of adult birds after feeding. The parents spend almost their entire time searching for food for the young. When an adult approaches a young one, it attempts to put the food into the mouth, but if the juvenile does not take it immediately, the adult passes on to another. In this way a fairly even distribution of food is effected. "

I didn't want the subway in the photo. Imagine the train would stand fully in the way and destroy the beautiful scene here. Now when you hear enfant sauvage with 58500 to it, you're pretty close. I like this station. Anyway I wish you a lot of fun listening and discovering.

Mum was sat opposite watching them and watching the area. She seemed to be ok with us being a distance away and not making noise.
I think the most heartbreaking aspect of this lovely Cheetah mother's story is that she used to have four cubs, so it's understandable that she was so watchful. We were so privileged that she allowed us to hang out for the time she gave us. Cheetah are vulnerable to poaching and of course habitat loss... but these cubs are vulnerable until they get a lot bigger.... to Lions, Leopards and Hyena, all of whom are in the reserve. I hope they make it.
