Our glance lingers over the debris of a triumphal arch, a portico, a pyramid, a temple, a palace, and we retreat into ourselves; we contemplate the ravages of time, and in our imagination we scatter the rubble of the very buildings in which we live over the ground; in that moment solitude and silence prevail around us, we are the sole survivors of an entire nation that is no more. Such is the first tenet of the poetics of ruins.

He is is traditionally ranked as Rome's greatest poets, well known for three major works of Latin literature, the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid.
- Named the SATOR square, can be read in all directions. The word TENET, holding a plough, forms a cross in the center of the square.
This square-palindrome was one of the signs of recognition of the first Christians, the first one was discovered on the site of Pompeii.
Despite the many possible translations, the one most often used would be:
The sower who plough and harvests in the cycle of the seasons is the work of God.

By the way, “Amor fati” literally means “love fate,” but within the tenets of stoicism it is generally accepted as “Embrace life.”

The Merry Cemetery (Romanian: Cimitirul Vesel pronounced [t͡ʃimiˈtirul ˈvesel]) is a cemetery in the village of Săpânța, Maramureş county, Romania. It is famous for its colourful tombstones with naïve paintings describing, in an original and poetic manner, the people who are buried there as well as scenes from their lives. The Merry Cemetery became an open-air museum and a national tourist attraction.
The unusual feature of this cemetery is that it diverges from the prevalent belief, culturally shared within European societies – a belief that views death as something indelibly solemn. Connections with the local Dacian culture have been made, a culture whose philosophical tenets presumably vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that death was a moment filled with joy and anticipation for a better life (see also Zalmoxianism).
In 2017 there was published the first book, which is a collection of the epithaps from the Merry Cemetery, by young author Roxana Mihalcea, who gathered the epithaps in the volume Crucile de la Săpânța [1] The indisputable merit of this work is the gathering of several hundred legible epitaphs from the Sapanta crosses. The author's texts enrich each chapter with in-depth commentary, accessible to the contemporary public, especially to the urban, less familiar with the rites of rural life in the past. So, the funerary lyrics from Sapanta get a sense beyond the disappeared world it evokes, giving readers valuable information about the everyday life of the village.
I wish you all the best, dear Elisabetta, on your Birthday!
I dedicate this photo to you because I know that you really like the headlights ... even if you can see this one from far away !

----------------
Cape Miseno is the headland that marks the northwestern limit of the Gulf of Naples as well as the Bay of Pozzuoli in southern Italy. The cape is directly across from the island of Procida and is named for Misenus, a character in Virgil's Aeneid.
Mythologically, important sections of the Aeneid play out in the Gulf of Naples: Cape Miseno is the place where Aeneas' comrade, Misenus, master of the sea-horn, the conch-shell, made "the waves ring" with his music and challenged the sea-god Triton to musical battle. He was dashed into the sea and killed by "jealous Triton". Then:
“Pius Aeneas ingenti mole sepulcrum
imponit suaque arma uiro remumque tubamque
"Pious Aeneas sets up a mighty tomb above Misenus
bearing his arms, a trumpet, and an oar;
it stands beneath a lofty promontory,
now known as Cape Misenus after him:
it keeps a name that lasts through all the ages"
----------------
Quindi:
“Pius Aeneas ingenti mole sepulcrum
imponit suaque arma uiro remumque tubamque

Adolph Gottlieb would utilize a minimal amount of elements thus allowing a palpable tension to develop between them.
Not shying away from my New topographics I adhere to the tenets Henry Wessel incorporated into his works; "allow the light of the scene to present itself naturally and be generous with the shadows to remain 'descriptive'".
So I would say the debate being how to structure such a simple shot.... Prescribed academic tenets would dictate to place it off from the center and apply the 1/3 principle.
However ask any New Topographics photographer and they would say take you artistry out of it and show it for what it is..
Just find a way that everything fits 'nicely' into the frame.
John Sarkowski did not rate photographic education very highly and in fact he thought it "could harm creativity, constraining one's personal visual exploration."
In nature, light creates the colour. In the picture, colour creates the light. Hans Hofmann.
Hans Hofmann (March 21, 1880 – February 17, 1966) was a German-born American painter, renowned as both an artist and teacher. His career spanned two generations and two continents, and is considered to have both preceded and influenced Abstract Expressionism. Born and educated near Munich, he was active in the early twentieth-century European avant-garde and brought a deep understanding and synthesis of Symbolism, Neo-impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism when he emigrated to the United States in 1932. Hofmann's painting is characterized by its rigorous concern with pictorial structure and unity, spatial illusionism, and use of bold color for expressive means.
Hofmann is also regarded as one of the most influential art teachers of the 20th century. He established an art school in Munich in 1915 that built on the ideas and work of Cézanne, the Cubists and Kandinsky; some art historians suggest it was the first modern school of art anywhere. After relocating to the United States, he reopened the school in both New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts until he retired from teaching in 1958 to paint full-time. His teaching had a significant influence on post-war American avant-garde artists—including Helen Frankenthaler, Nell Blaine, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, and Larry Rivers, among many—as well as on the theories of Greenberg, in his emphasis on the medium, picture plane, and unity of the work. Some of Hofmann's other key tenets include his push/pull spatial theories, his insistence that abstract art has its origin in nature, and his belief in the spiritual value of art. Source Wikipedia.

As photography enthusiasts we are each drawn to a specific genre. Granted we admire all sorts of pictures, but there is a certain class of images we particularly are drawn to. Some like portraiture, some still-life, others formal landscape photography, and some street...
It was a while before I found myself admiring New Topographics photos. I found my admiration was in their honesty and utilization of space. I found that I related to their aesthetic because I was immersed in that type of scenario all around me. Intentionally regular and bland and not necessarily "pretty" I found them quite worthy of my attention.
I found myself being a more honest photographer when I adapted the New Topographics style and followed their tenets. Then one day I went back through my SD cards and found that I had been taking such pictures on many occasions without knowing it.
There is quite some overlap between New Topographics and Uncommon Places picture making, but at their cores they are very distinct.
With this particular scene I tried to push the envelope and present a landscape far beyond the aesthetics of 'calendar' pictures.
New topographics images can be quite challenging to comprehend, but taken in context to the groups tenets brings some degree of appreciation.
Inspired by Joe Deal book 'Between nature and culture'. I wanted this electric box in the middle of nowhere to blend into the landscape.

An important tenet in New Topographic image making is to give the scene as much 'space' as it requires and embrace the brightness of the inherent existing sunlight.
I could have moved in closer making the shot about the booth, but by allowing for 'space' the image is about the landscape.
I applied a border around this image to attempt to quell it's immediacy and foreboding presence.
In my pursuit of this movement's basic tenets I want to also adhere to the photography adage, "be yourself".
The direct lighting and urbanism were there, but missing was simple elegance.
These towers were just to overbearing to allow for any poetics.
The Wall Says It All...
The Distillery district is a group of historic buildings re-purposed to attract the younger generation. amidst all the concrete and red sand brick i found this shot of the old sand brick wall with the small beer keg door really caught my eye.. our walk through the distillery district was full of surprises as the artwork is very unique and well worth the trip downtown.
This scrawled sign on the wall details my tenet for photography... "see beauty in everything"
