And another impression from our recent hike into one of the remaining high-altitude oak woodlands which are part of the temperate rainforests.
The common blue (Polyommatus icarus) is a small butterfly in the family Lycaenidae.
The butterfly can be found in Europe, North Africa, the Canary Islands, and temperate Asia to Northern China.
The common blue is the most widespread of the blue butterflies.
It is found in a variety of habitats including heathland, woodland rides, grassy meadows, parks and even large gardens.
The common blue has a wingspan of 25 - 36 millimetres.
Males are slightly larger than females.
There a great difference between the male and female in this species. The upper side of the wings of the males is an iridescent lilac blue with a thin black-brown border and a white fringe.
The upper side of the females' wings are brown with a row of orange-red spots along the edges of the wings and usually some blue at the base. The extent of blue and brown is extremely variable depending on location.
The underside has a grayish base color in the males and a more brownish hue in the females. Both sexes have a row of red spots along the edge of the hindwing and extending onto the forewing, though they are generally fainter there, particularly in the males, where they are sometimes missing altogether.

Temperate rain forest old growth on Vancouver Island. Douglas-fir (right), with its deeply striated bark and characteristic three-pronged cones, is the first of the West Coast giants to dominate an area following fire. It grows fast and tall - 200 feet or more in coastal areas - but its seedlings can't grow in shade, so once mature trees begin to form a canopy overhead, other species begin to take over. These include Western Hemlock (left) and Western Redcedar.
These old growth forests used to be widespread along coastal British Columbia, but are now reduced to remnants like this one in Cathedral Grove. Against all common sense - short term financial gain aside - successive provincial governments of all political stripes continue to allow multinational forestry companies to chip away at what remains.

While everybody else on the tour was craning over each-other to get a sight of a mist-covered Serrano glacier, my gaze was drawn down to the multitude of beautiful plants and lichens lining the path along the forest edge.
In the rain, all I could use was my very basic (but waterproof) Fuji XP-90 point-and-shoot.
Any speces identification would be much appreciated.
Ferns and mosses on a fallen tree, deep in the heart of the Styx Valley in southern Tasmania.
The area has been extensively logged but a tiny remnant of the original cool temperate rainforest exists as a reserve for big trees.
The Big Tree reserve is easily accessible to Hobart - only slightly over an hour's drive to be surrounded by a forest so much older than you. If you visit Mount Field National Park then it behooves you to do the extra 30mins up the road into the Styx Reserve. After a visit it's not hard to see why the logging of these forests has been a source of unrest for many years.

SN/NC: Cosmos Bipinnatus, Asteraceae Family
Commonly called the garden cosmos or Mexican aster, is a medium-sized flowering herbaceous plant native to the Americas. The species and its varieties and cultivars are popular as an ornamental plant in temperate climate gardens. Cosmos bipinnatus is considered a half-hardy annual, although plants may reappear via self-sowing for several years. The plant height varies from 2–4 ft (0.61–1.22 m). The cultivated varieties appear in shades of pink and purple as well as white. Its foliage is finely cut into threadlike segments. When flowering, the plant can become top heavy. This problem is alleviated when grown in groups, as the bipinnate leaves interlock, and the colony supports itself. The branched stem is usually densely to occasionally occupied by fine, split-up, rough trichomes, some specimens are completely hairless. The petiole itself is inconspicuous, winged, 10 (rarely to 15) mm long, sometimes the leaves are almost sessile. The partial leaves are linear-filiform to narrow linear with a width of 0.5 to 1 (rarely to 1.7) mm; the tips are pointed, hardened, but not particularly sharp. It is a lovely planta and even a more lovely flower. A flower of simple and great beauty.

In this image, I chose to focus on the architectural detail and decorative motifs such as the finials, pediments and acanthus leaf capitals.
This is a Victorian building, begun in 1860, in the Renaissance Revival style. Decimus Burton and Irish engineer, Richard Turner, were the designers.
I've visited these gardens so many times over the years, truly a favourite place to pass a day.

The striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) is an extensively studied dolphin found in temperate and tropical waters of all the world's oceans.
The striped dolphin has a similar size and shape to several other dolphins that inhabit the waters it does (see pantropical spotted dolphin, Atlantic spotted dolphin, Clymene dolphin). However, its colouring is very different and makes it relatively easy to notice at sea.
The underside is blue, white, or pink. One or two black bands circle the eyes, and then run across the back, to the flipper. These bands widen to the width of the flipper which are the same size. Two further black stripes run from behind the ear — one is short and ends just above the flipper. The other is longer and thickens along the flanks until it curves down under the belly just prior to the tail stock.
Above these stripes, the dolphin's flanks are coloured light blue or grey. All appendages are black, as well. At birth, individuals weigh about 10 kg (22 lb) and are up to a meter (3 feet) long. By adulthood, they have grown to 2.4 m (8 ft) (females) or 2.6 m (8.5 ft) (males) and weigh 150 kg (330 lb) (female) or 160 kg (352 lb) (male). Research suggested sexual maturity was reached at 12 years in Mediterranean females and in the Pacific at between seven and 9 years. Longevity is about 55–60 years. Gestation lasts about 12 months, with a three- or four-year gap between calving.

A wonderful walk in a coastal rainforest today.
Coastal rainforests are among the rarest and most productive ecosystems on the planet providing critical habitat for an amazing variety of flora and fauna.
Close to 25% of the world’s temperate rainforest is in BC with most of it being coastal. BC's coastal rainforest is different from other temperate rainforests because it has more coniferous trees than deciduous trees. Compared to tropical rainforests, temperate rainforests decompose slowly, resulting in a rich vegetation base with a variety of mushrooms, mosses and plants.
