I love cats very much and I can’t pass by these creatures, many kindly agree to pose.

Natural Bridges has one of the darkest skies in the US, with almost no light pollution. It is one of the greatest places to observe the night ski. The International Dark-Sky Association has designated Natural Bridges National Monument as the world's first International Dark Sky Park.

Sipapu Bridge seen here is the second largest natural bridge in the world and means "the place of emergence"

A trip to the southwest, for me is always a bit spiritual, the Navajo culture is deep with mystical stories of past ancestors and spirit guides that oversee your conduct in life and in the wilds.

For this trip I was going to be basing my central camp in the San Juan Valley and venture to my favorite areas for more scouting and shooting. I departed the house with William McIntosh to meet up with Wayne Pinkston in Mexican Hat for a shoot in Natural Bridges.

Upon meeting at the visitor center, we quickly departed for the bridges, we ran into Gabriel Biderman teaching a workshop at Owachomo Bridge so the place seemed like a zoo as we are used to shooting more remote locations but Gabriel was very courteous and most accommodating, so "hats" of to him for his professionalism. We shot there for a couple hours and then made off for Sipapu Bridge further up the road. As we descended into the darkness my spidey senses started to awaken, the deeper we went the more they tingled and I felt like eyes were watching us and then thought about the story behind the arch. It was thought that this was a doorway to a spirit world and spirits passed from this realm to the afterlife, the civilizations of old would watch here for them to emerge. 😱 After many swithbacks and a sharp descent I started to wonder “where is this thing”, we reached stage one, a 10 ft handmade ladder constructed of wood gathered from around the area, you know the kind of wood that you burn in the fire pit!!! Wayne truly is amazing, he just shrugged it off like some modern day Indiana Jones and down he went, I shot Bill a glance and I could see his spidey sense had gone off too. I think telepathy kicked in and I saw in Bills eyes exactly what I was thinking, “What a minute, no body said anything about sketchy wooden ladders descending into the darkness” Rut-Ro(scooby). Several hundred feet later we ran into another “Ladder” which was even sketchier than the last one, this is the point where my curiosity peaked so I grabbed my one million candlepower torchlight and lit up the darkness and what "emerged" was the most awe inspiring behemoth of an arch I have ever seen, it literally blotted out the night sky completing the darkness. By the time we reached the third “Ladder” we were directly under this colossal structure. With a massive buttress to the right it stretches 225' across wide enough to drive a automobile over, and stands 145' high. Humm, how do I get the RAV4 up there, Hehe. As soon as my mind absorbed the enormity of it I felt like an ant, you know the one that you smash(Budda be damned) on your kitchen counter for trespassing. A truly unique and humbling experience to be sure. This scene was lit up by Wayne, while I did the test exposures and I could see Bill exploring the area to shoot with of course his FISHEYE!!! That guy loves that lens and the more he uses it the more I feel the need for one too!! If anybody has a 12mm f2.8 for sale please leave a comment before I strangle Bill. LOL. :) Just kidding Bill !!!

Honda Civic Type R

The Civic Type R looks like something the devil himself spat on the asphalt, and it goes like a bat out of hell, too. Its exclusive turbocharged four-cylinder makes 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The eager engine always feels alive with a responsive throttle and imperceptible turbo lag. A short-throw six-speed manual is also on hand and the only transmission choice. The Honda's easy clutch action and precise shifter are as perfectly synchronized as a pair of figure skaters. Too bad the triple-pipe, center-exit exhaust isn't as loud as the exterior styling. Sure, its innocuous note is appreciated on long trips, but we want more roar in a car that looks and drives like this one. The Type R is that rare type of car with terrific track ability and amicable road manners. It sticks to the road like bionic Velcro, with steering telepathy that would embarrass Miss Cleo and a chassis seemingly tuned by a Formula 1 engineer. Although its suspension is stiffer than the sporty Honda Civic Si's, the R-rated version is still surprisingly comfortable. It's only slightly impolite on rough roads or over harsh bumps, where the 20-inch wheels and low-profile tires yield loud impacts. The Honda's immense grip was exhibited on our skidpad, where it pulled 1.02 g's—an impressive feat for any car, let alone one with front-wheel drive. The Type R set the bar even higher with its astonishing emergency-braking distance (70 mph to zero) of 142 feet, which equals that of the $200,000 Acura NSX supercar we tested.

All this adds up to some pretty impressive numbers on the track:

0-100 mph: 11.5 sec

1/4 mile: 13.4 sec @ 108 mph

Top speed (mfr's claim): 169 mph

Welcome to Lyman.

These doors make me think that this building was the town's theater. The Lyman Theater (as it was named) was opened in the summer of 1927 by G.A. Parberry. And installed a new sound system in March of 1938. Not only that, they also got a Crystal Beaded screen and reflecting arc lamps. And in the summer of 1955, they finally got air conditioning!

I'm not sure when it closed, but the last newspaper listing for showtimes was in December 1956. They showed Revenge of the Creature starring John Agar.

It's possible they closed after that. The same ad mentions that they were going to one movie per week. Prior to that, they'd show as many four films, changing them every couple of nights.

I must admit this hasn’t been the first time to have experienced this unique bonding, when the bird accepted my presence and wouldn’t fly away. Call it “interspecies communication" if you wish, or telepathy - I don’t know (smile).

After taking a few good shots with my 400mm f5.6, I have decided to take the chance and switch lenses, for a shallower DOF. The cute owl didn't move a bit. I must admit having experienced a feeling of acceptance and trust. I gave the owl its space by not getting too close.

A tribute to the many writers who have played an unimaginably important role in my life. Language is one of the most magical and delightful creations the human race has produced (I find it significant that certain religions and ideologies stress the power of the written and spoken word)--various arcane symbols rooted in ages gone by, filled with nuanced meanings, ever changing and evolving. Language enables us to share our ideas, feelings and emotions with other humans, a sort of primitive telepathy--a way of bridging the gap between our isolated conscious experiences, across time and space.

Without the magic of language, and the many writers who have dedicated themselves to the craft and mastery of it, our life here on Earth would be significantly impoverished.

So here's to the writers, living and dead; the wordsmiths who live in my heart and converse in my head.
