This was an accidental visit. We were heading back to our hotel after driving around Madeira. The weather was excellent, we were hungry and thirsty, and we just passed the airport when we saw a plane land. The wife said we should find somewhere to eat and watch planes. Sounds great to me!
We found an eatery called Cassiano's Snack Bar. Great place to relax. Excellent viewpoint over the terminal area and the south end of the runway. Cold beer (1.50 euro) and great snacks. Nice way to spend about two hours.
Funchal Airport is amazing. On one side it was cut out of the mountain, on the other it is almost on the water. Narrow runway, very limited taxiway. It looks like arrivals are stacked for one hour and then the next hour is used for departures.
What a cool way to relax!
