fun composite abstract image done by mirroring the base image by flipping it horizontally, and upside down, and adding moon photograph to composite. For Sliders Sunday

We've all seen this end of the syringe - some 4x this year alone.

So what do you do with an empty one?

Fill it with lubricant and use it to place a drop with precision where you want it - but don't jab yourself!

Syringes by Katat0nik <3 can be found at I.D.K event until September 11th.

Using a small plastic fishtank with black background, flash above (yong nuo triggers) with 2 x 500w work lamps at the corners. Get fresh cream, add food colours/dyes, get a small syringe and you are set. Shutter sync max speed of 1/200s, ISO100 and variable aperture (ETTR) and see what happens. Side lighting really helps showing 3D objects

A lot of Lightroom manipulation especially changing hue/saturation and luminance.

Simple cleanup but need to do it regularly as the water gets pretty dirty quickly.

Improvements

-:short/sharp quirts and shots quickly => need to shoot at the same time as pushing the syringe.

- stronger colours... have bought Liquidex inks which are intense but cleanup will be tricky ie not in the kitchen sink

- thinner syringe ie with thick needle might also be better

- better angle for side lighting as the shot was dark underneath.

I was down by 5th and Town and had just finished photographing a woman named Gina. When I looked down I saw the syringes shrewn across the sidewalk. They aren’t hard to find down here. You can find them everywhere, scattered on the concrete, forming a trail of broken dreams. I often wonder about the people who left them behind. Who are they? Who were they once in a different life and what transpired that brought them here. This is the reality of life here. So many of the people I meet are struggling with addiction. They spend their days scourging for money to feed their habits. It’s easy to judge them… easy to glance at them and in an instant and view them as “troubled” or “weak”. But that would be a mistake. We lose sight that these are real people who once had real dreams. They are Bothers, Sister, Mothers, Fathers, Husbands and Wives. Every time I see a syringe I see more than just a piece of plastic that someone used to inject their drug of choice. I see the ghosts of tortured souls and the light of promise within them… a light that grows dimmer and dimmer, day by day.

Recently I was inspired by a pair of minifigure weapons, specifically the ring weapon from Black Panther, and the Rapier to create an old fashioned metal syringe, and that spiraled into the set of three MOCs presented here. The syringe is functional in as far as the pump can be drawn out and pushed back in.

What is someone to do when you have bank holiday (although I am not in finance) and my wife is a teacher ie the only day of the year when I have a holiday and she doesn't.... well macro high speed photography!

A lot of Lightroom manipulation especially changing hue/saturation and luminance. In PS, duplicate layer, command T, flip horizontal, move to align for symmetry, layer mask with gradient for reflection. Crop and flatten. clean up any bubbles and have full black background, Flip vertical and voila!
