I keep struggling to actually capture in a photo the organic chaos that surrounds visitors in the ancient pine forest of Tamangur. This one comes closer than most other attempts.

God Tamangur, Val S-charl

Well, not exactly...

Even though you might confuse those as stones whose shells can be cracked open to reveal pine nuts, those are the edible fruits of the "Swiss stone pine" (Pinus cembra).

They are a bit rounder than the pine nuts, but can be enjoyed like those latter, in salad, pesto or as a healthy snack.

Sometimes you have to look back even when the goal (the lake) lies straight ahead of you. This tree might have seen its first light, when the years were still counted in three digits.

At an altitude of 6000 ft trees are growing very slowly (sometimes the thickness of the trunks only grows around 5 inches per 100 years) and this fellow could easily have an age of 1000 or more!

Pine cone top of a Roman tomb. Augsburg was founded in 15 BC by Romans as a garrison town, which around 120 AD became the capital of the province Raetia. Due to a 400-year affiliation with the Roman Empire Augsburg is very rich in archaeological finds of the Roman era.

The pine cone (German: Zirbelnuss or Pyr) used to be a symbol of immortality, but it also was the standard of the Roman legion that conquered the region in 15 BC. It later became a model of the city's coat of arms.

Today it also adorns the FC Augsburg players' breast, because it's part of the club's logo.

Thank you for your visits / comments / faves!

Calm autumn in the Swiss National Park in the Engadin / Grisons area on a golden October day.

After very mild winter we get our first cold weather (-20C) then a sprinkle of snow. The Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra 'Algonquin Pilla'), Alberta Spruce; Rhododendron and Lavender are likely enjoying the blanket of snow.

Catching the beautiful colors of a typical Engadin autumn morning while on my way to work: Steel blue sky, a calm lake topped by some evaporation fog and golden Swiss pines leading to a beautiful contrast.

The scnenery was actually so stunning that I got to work way too late. But I think it was well worth it!

The new Swiss Stone Pine (Pinus cembra 'Algonquin Pilla') planted last fall is doing well (left background behind Alberta Spruce). The Japanese Iris (back fence) are budding but not yet in flower. The Wisteria (Japanese) is growing but not flowering. The lavender along path is nearly ready to flower.

Missouri Botanical Garden: Pinus cembra, commonly called Swiss stone pine or arolla pine, is native to mountain areas in central Europe from the Alps to the Carpathians. It is a slow-growing, medium-sized pine with a narrow pyramidal shape in its youth, gradually becoming rounded and more open as it matures. It typically grows 30-40’ tall in cultivation, but will grow to 100’ tall in the wild in its native habitat. Soft, dark green to blue green needles (2-5” long) with white stomatic lines appear in bundles of five. Short-stalked, oblong cones (to 2.5” long) are greenish purple when young, maturing to purplish-brown. Cones never open. Cone seeds are edible. The pine nuts consumed as food in Europe primarily come from the stone pines, namely, this species and P. pinea (Italian stone pine).

Male flowers and cones of Arolla or Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra 'Pygmaea'), mid March. As the name 'Pygmaea' suggests, this is a compact, dwarf or pygmy variety.

Pinus cembra 'Pygmaea' (European Heirloom, 1855) 2019 photo - Common Name: Dwarf Swiss stone pine, Size at 10 years: 2x1ft., thin, outspread to drooping Blue-green needles, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, In Garden Bed HR-S for 16.8 YEARS (HLG). Planted in 2003.

ACS: Pinus cembra 'Pygmaea' is a slow growing dwarf selection of Swiss Stone pine with a beehive-shaped, broadly conical structure, dense short branches, and very thin, outspread to drooping Blue-green needles that grow to uneven lengths. After 10 years, a mature specimen may reach 16 inches (40 cm) in height, implying a growth rate of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 - 5 cm) per year.

This is a very old cultivar in the nursery trade, being first recorded by Élie-Abel Carrière in 1855 and has been widely planted in European gardens. Its origin has been completely confused with that of the similar Pinus pumila 'Pygmaea.' In his book, Manual of Cultivated Conifers, Gerd Krüssmann suggests that the true cultivar may be lost to cultivation. The reader should note that the rather vigorous plant widely grown in North America may be a different cultivar entirely.

Pinus cembra 'Silver Sheen', 2019 photo, Common Name: Swiss stone pine, Size: 20x15ft, blue-green needles with a silver sheen. , USDA Hardiness Zone 3, In Garden Bed HR-F for 38.1 YEARS (HLG). Planted in 1981.

Iseli Nursery: The full, open habit of Pinus cembra ‘Silver Sheen’ distinguishes this Swiss Stone Pine as the largest of those we grow. Like other cembras, it produces long, two-toned needles that twist and weave together, forming bushy, blue-green branches with a “silver sheen.” The beautiful, extremely hardy tree needs little pruning to stay in scale and makes a vastly superior alternative for Pinus flexilis ‘Vanderwolf’s Pyramid’. Deserving of greater use, it resists pests and disease, grows slowly and produces year-round beauty in many landscape positions.
