This past Saturday, my wife's friend Marie McAlpine came over to practice some Halloween makeup application and have me photograph it for her to be able to share it through social media.
Most of what we did was a little more traditional Halloween makeup, but I've been curious about trying a black light session for quite some time now and decided this was the time to do it. More images to come. :)

No, I didn't steal the sunset.
Nor is this a long exposure to soften the water.
A few minutes after the previous shot, I took this photo by moving the camera horizontally, rather rapidly. I stopped it down (Aperture priority) to f/25 so the shutter speed would be 1/6 second. The sense of motion comes from the camera, not the scene or time.
Although this is similar to some of my long exposure photos ( see Evening Storm on the California Coast ), it really departs from my philosophy of using photography to document the world. The camera played a very intrusive role in making this image.
The amusing thing about this photo is that I did not use a tripod, and I did not have to straighten the horizon! I rarely get these ocean shots level, even with a tripod.
Fun, right?
Bigger is better, although you still won't see any detail.
This link ( Extending the Sunset ) has some commentary about the concept behind the image.

Took a trip to the concrete graveyard last night with Casey. It was right by my friend's, Hannah Roberts, house so she came as well.
This photo was actually a test shot but I like it the most from this part of the shoot. I brought along my suit to give the photo a cool feel. So for this, I started the camera on a time, ran into place, spun the wand locked on blue, and then had Hannah flash me a little from the side on half power with a blue gelled flash.
This fits into my concentration because I keep coming up with new ideas and I'm not limiting myself to only certain types of light painting. I think this is a very quality photo and the motion is evident and I like how you can see where it starts and ends.
Swiping is an audio/visual animation composed using swipe gestures made on an iPad – a contemporary Abstract Expressionist painting that reflects on the gesture in the digital age. Each new swipe generates a colorful brush-like form that dynamically expands in 3-dimensions, accompanied by synthetic sound. Here, the gesture is not the expressive act that Abstract Expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock were known for; instead it is a physical command to explore an infinite flow of digital information.
To create Swiping, thousands of gestures were recorded on an iPad and then animated using custom software. Sound by Chris Carlson (@modulationindex). Made with OpenFrameworks.

Today I will share an interesting trick/ technique. Not with the camera or software. But Its about safety/ wasp behaviour/ or how to work safely with wasps.
Many of you might know this but if you don't you will find this helpful.
There are no shortage of beautiful wasp photos on the internet. But it is quite dangerous to work with wasps without any protective gear. There is a good chance that you will get stung. And the often fly away before you even approach.
So I learned this trick from the locals. They use red chili🌶️ to deal with wasps. They are very fond of red chili🌶️. They draw out wasp a few at a time from their hives and kill them.
{Now the chili has to be red. Green won't work.}
Now you can use this technique not to kill but to get some decent shot.
Use a big stick and attach a red chili on top. Now slowly take the chili🌶️ in front of the hive or individual wasp. Wait till the sit on the chili. When they sit on it slowly draw it out to a safe and open place. Put the stick carefully on any small tree branch. It will give good background. Or you can also create your suitable setup. Hopefully the wasp won't fly away. And will remain calm and won't get aggressive. And you will get some times to take your desirable shot. If it flies away. Try again. But be careful.
Tried this trick and I think I got good results.
