Walking on the streets of London I chanced upon a Hindu temple, it was BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. This beautiful sight of the white carved temple with red flags flying on the pinnacle and the clear blue sky was the most tranquil place to be. The facade of this temple was grand having one dome shaped and five cone shaped structures with intricate carving. Each tip of these spires had golden Kalash on it to give it a rich look. One of the most prominent features of the heritage of Swaminarayan is temple architecture. The temples built by Swaminarayan are the evidence of the priority of Lord Krishna in Hinduism.

I contacted BAPS Chicago to ask if it was possible to photograph the exterior at night. They have some restrictions on photography that must be met, and there can be no commercial use of the photos, but with that understanding, we were invited to visit BAPS Chicago with some members of our photo group, West Suburban Chicago Flickrers (WSCF) and remain after hours to photograph the exterior.

We were also invited on a tour of the interior of the Mandir, the large stone structure in the photos, and we learned a bit about Hindu history and religion. Photographing the interior is not permitted, but it is absolutely stunning. The entire structure is made of stone without any metal or other support structure. It’s an incredible place and I would encourage anyone to visit.

After dark, the Mandir is illuminated by a programmed light system. The designers of the system were also on hand to talk about the lights and demonstrate some of the effects.

The people were very welcoming and visiting BAPS Chicago was a great experience. Thank you to Mr. Harish Patel for the gracious invitation, and for teaching us all something about this fascinating place.
