I look behind and after

And find that all is right,

In my deepest sorrows

There is a soul of light.

Indian cities are cauldrons of turmoil but there are quiet spots as well. One such is the handsome Porter Town Hall in Kumbakonam. It's named after a great educator who did much for Indian education: William Archer Porter (1825-1890). The faux-gold statue in front is of Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902). He was an expert in Vedanta and Yoga and important in their transmission to the West. Also a pantheist and secular socialist his mottos were 'Strength is Life' and "Arise! Awake', extensively explained in a speech held here in 1897. They immediately reminded me of the great Dutch orator, educator and socialist politician Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (1846-1919), who in 1898 founded an important socialist journal.

After a couple of minutes, back into the turmoil...

"Good and bad are both bondages of the soul… If we do not attach ourselves to the work we do, it will not have any binding effect on our soul… work incessantly, but be not attached to it."

"Liberation means entire freedom... freedom from the bondage of good, as well as from the bondage of evil. A golden chain is as much a chain as an iron one. There is a thorn in my finger, and I use another to take the first one out; and when I have taken it out, I throw both of them aside; I have no necessity for keeping the second thorn, because both are thorns after all."

It is beauty never seen,

And love that stands alone,

It is song that lives un-sung,

And knowledge never known.

- Swami Vivekananda

Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu.

This memorial was built in 1970 and reflects architectural styles from all over India. It is 400 metres offshore, reached by a very creaking and rusty old ferry, on the rock where Swami Vivekananda meditated before he travelled abroad.

"E' tramite tuo che il sole risplende,

le stelle emanano la loro lucentezza

e la terra si fa bella.

È tramite la tua beatitudine

che tutti questi elementi amano

e si attraggano reciprocamente.

Tu sei in tutto e sei tutto."

The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters east off mainland of Vavathurai, India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the visit of the Hindu spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda to Shripada Parai during the month of December 1892.[1] It is claimed that he swam to this rock and meditated. It is said that he attained enlightenment on the rock, and henceforth became a reformer and philosopher.

This is one of the major tourist destinations in South india.

The great Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda’s memorial is built in a small island like rock 200 meters from the shore. A very great building and other halls are constructed in this rock. There is a meditation hall where people who wants to meditate in a calm and composed atmosphere can perform their meditation inside it. Boat facilities are available for the tourists.

Swamy Vivekananda came to kanyakumari on 24.2.1892 before his departure for Chicago to participate in the World Religious Conference in 1893. He sat on meditation on this rock for two days and became a powerful spiritual leader and philosopher. Vivekananda Rock Memorial has been built in 1970 and is a blend of various architectural styles of India. The memorial was constructed in 2081 working days with an average of about 650 men working under the supervision of Sri. S.K.Achari.

Ediing: A bit of 'Boost' in Picasa.

On a sunny and hot day in Enugu Nigeria, I saw this woman waiting for public transport. Right behind her on the board you can see Swami Vivekananda, who has been a great Indian spiritual leader. It was quite a contrast to have in one frame and seeing Swami Vivekananda in Nigeria was itself a HUGE surprise. More on Vivekananda : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivekananda

Vivekananda Rocks is one of the most visited tourist attraction and also a pilgrim center in the southern tip of India, Kanyakumari. Swami Vivekananda has spent 3 days on this rocks for meditation.

More on Vivekananda Rocks from Wikipedia:

Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a sacred monument and popular tourist attraction in Kanyakumari, India. The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda to Shripada Parai during the month of December 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment. He swam to this rock and meditated about the past, present and future of India. It is said that he attained enlightenment on the rock, and henceforth became a reformer and philosopher.

From very ancient times, the rock has been regarded as a sacred place. The mythical tradition states that it has been known as 'Sripada Parai', meaning the rock that has been blessed by the touch of ‘the sacred feet’ of the Devi Kumari. On the rock is a projection similar in form to a human foot and a little brownish in complexion, which has traditionally been venerated as a symbol of Shripadam. According to legend, it was on this rock that Devi Kumari performed austerity.

A meditation hall (Dhyana Mandapam) is also attached to the memorial for visitors to meditate. The design of the mandapa incorporates different styles of temple architecture from all over India. It houses a statue of Vivekananda. The merger of three seas - Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean can be seen from these rocks.

The memorial consists of two main structures, the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam.

This monument was hit by the Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 26, 2004.

Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, a chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is located on the west bank of Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal, India and is one of the significant institutions in Kolkata. This temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna Movement. The temple is notable for its architecture that fuses Hindu, Christian and Islamic motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions.

The 40-acre campus of the Belur Math includes temples dedicated to Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, in which their relics are enshrined, and the main monastery of the Ramakrishna order. The campus also houses a museum containing articles connected with the history of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Several educational institutions affiliated with the Ramakrishna Mission are situated in the vast campus adjacent to Belur Math.

I stood there at the same spot for more than half an hour to get one perfect picture. But ended up getting many. Now the challenge is to pick the best. Too many troubles huh!

20 sec exposure shot at f/9.0 using ND 3.0 filter. Used Tungsten white balance to overcome the excessive warming produced by the filter. BTW, the shadow on the left is mine :-) Stood on a rock with my tripod set waiting for a right wave to hit. Got lucky few times. Had to run away with my tripod at times :-) Overall it was a great fun photographing Vivekananda Rock Memorial.

Kanyakumari, the Land's end, and the confluence of the three water bodies, is 20 km to the south of Nagercoil, with tourist attractions of its own which include the Vivekanda Rock Memorial, 133 ft high statue of Tamil poet-saint Tiruvalluvar - both on the mid-sea on rocky islands; the place is also famous for its distinctly beautiful (reddish) sunrise and sunset.

Today is the holy birthday of Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda (1863 – 1902) was born in this house on 12th January, 1863 in Calcutta (the then capital of India). It was Monday and the exact holy birth hour was 33 minutes and 33 seconds after six in the morning (before sunrise). The day was also holy as it was Makara Sankranti day – a great Hindu festival day. Swami Vivekananda was the eldest son of Viswanath Datta and Bhubaneshwari Devi. Vishwanath Datta was a reputed attorney–at–law at Calcutta High Court. Please read the biography of Swami Vivekananda at www.belurmath.org

About 300 years ago, this house was built by Rammohan Datta, the great-grandfather of Swami Vivekananda. After a long time, Ramakrishna Mission has restored the ancestral house of Swamiji. You can visit this holy place, the address is:

This year is 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda; This picture in my stream is to commemorate that and share this information with others..

Without a question, Kanyakumari a.k.a. Cape Comorin is one the best tourist destinations in India. It being the southern most tip of India, you see both Sunrise and Sunset across the ocean. And the confluence of three ocean bodies - Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea makes these events even better.

Also known for the famous Vivekananda Rock Memorial built in 1970 where Swami Vivekananda said to be seated for meditation after swimming across the ocean. Recent addition (Year 2000) is the giant statue of Thiruvalluvar, a tamil poet, measuring 133 feet in height.

BTW, this is my first road trip by Car (Yep. Finally bought a Car). Located 680 km south of Bengaluru, Kanyakumari can be reached by a 4-Lane Toll Road or by train.

Public Notice 3: By Jitish Kallat, this installation features Swami Vivekananda's words on the risers of the Grand Staircase.

Your Song releases me.

Waves and splashes of music gush forth.

My fear washes away.

What is there to lose?

In the end there is only Love.

We return to that Holy state

which was never a physical place.

Love offers everything.

Sacrifices everything.

Endures everything.

Returns everything.

Creates everything.

Celebrates everything.

Dissolves everything.

Embraces everything.

Releases everything.

Redeems everything.

Love never fails.

I Am Love’s creation.

In Love’s Grace

my freedom is made perfect.

In Your Song this Joy overflows.

The Ramakrishna Temple at the Belur Math, Howrah. Built in 1898, Belur Math is the worldwide headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. Located on the serene banks of the Ganga, it is one of the best places to soothe oneself amidst the polluted environment and the hectic schedules in the city of Kolkata.

The building , a modern shrine resembles a temple, a mosque, a church if seen from different positions.

Celebration of Swami Vivekananda's Birthday (Janmatithi) at Belur Math, on 8 January 2018

Hassan, parade to commemorate that Swami Vivekananda was born 150 years ago. The video was taken from a slowly moving bus

Hassan is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka and was founded in the 11th century, during the Hoysala dynasty, by Channa Krishnappa Naik, a chieftain (palegar). The city is named after the Goddess "Hassanamba", the city's goddess and presiding deity. Some consider it the temple-architectural capital of Karnataka.

Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 – 4 July 1902), born Narendra Nath Datta, was an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century. He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India, and contributed to the concept of nationalism in colonial India. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech which began, "Sisters and brothers of America ...," in which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Born into an aristocratic Bengali family of Calcutta, Vivekananda was inclined towards spirituality. He was influenced by his guru, Ramakrishna, from whom he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self; therefore, service to God could be rendered by service to mankind. After Ramakrishna's death, Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent extensively and acquired first-hand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. He later travelled to the United States, representing India at the 1893 Parliament of the World Religions. Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint and his birthday is celebrated there as National Youth Day.
