The station was constructed in 1862, as the northern terminus the line from Birmingham built by the London and North Western Railway. In 1884, the line was extended north to Lichfield.
The station was the location of a train crash on 23 January 1955, in which 17 people died.

Sutton Park Station on 02/10/80.
Situated on the Midland Railway's Walsall to Water Orton line, Sutton Park station closed to passengers in 1965. The main station building lingered on in commercial use for many years but is now demolished. The Sutton Park line itself is still open as a busy freight route.

Trouble at Sutton. "Have you permission to take pictures" I don't need any, I said, as long as its not commerical photography. Would you like to see my copy of Network Rails guide lines for rail enthusiasts I asked ? At this point a rather large and very noisy dog appeared which the lady member of staff felt was a far greater threat then myself, so at this she left. So the point is bring a friend with a large dog to give them something really to worry about.
