With a total area of 1 862 km2, Comoros is the third-smallest nation in Africa. It is also among the least developed countries in the world, with about half of the population living below the poverty line. Over 80 percent Comorans are dependent on agriculture and fishing for their livelihoods. Staple crops are bananas, cassava, and taro, while cloves, ylang-ylang and vanilla are grown for export.
Polluted water from rivers end up flowing straight into the ocean, affecting coastal ecosystems on which so many islander depend. Solid waste is pilling up on the beaches.

"Today’s global food system has major weaknesses: nearly 800 million people are left hungry, one-third of the human race is malnourished, over half of some crops never make it to the table, and the planet is ravaged from environmentally unfriendly agricultural practices. As the global population is expected to soar exponentially in the coming years, we must examine ways to feed more people efficiently and sustainably, while combating climate change."
The 2016 Global Food Policy Report provides an in-depth look at major food policy developments and events in the past year, and examines key challenges and opportunities for the coming year.

During the panel discussion Helen Keller International's President / CEO Kathy Spahn noted, “just as hunger and undernutrition are markers of poverty, ending hunger and undernutrition are markers and makers of prosperity."
Compact2025 is an initiative for ending hunger and undernutrition by 2025. By building a knowledge base, promoting innovation, and bringing stakeholders together, Compact2025 helps countries develop, scale up, and communicate policies and programs to accelerate progress. Champions and influential thinkers for policy make up the Leadership Council, which provides strategic guidance to help shape and hold national leaders' promise to overcome country and global-level challenges to eliminate hunger and undernutrition over the next decade.

The event the New York Times described as “One of the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” was held for its 110th year in Newport Harbour on Wednesday, December 14th through the 18th, 2022.
The 114th Annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade took place over five spectacular nights from December 14 to 18, 2022, in Newport Beach, California, USA. For over a century, more than 150 beautifully decorated yachts and boats of various sizes have participated in the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and lit up Newport Beach nightly. For five nights, we have enjoyed the parade in a variety of exciting ways, including a family-friendly event on the sand, by boat, or from the shore.
RING OF LIGHTS:
Homes along the Christmas Boat Parade route competed in a ‘Ring of Lights’ decorating contest, with each home displaying its own extravagantly themed decorations. The Ring of Lights has become as popular as the boat parade itself, with lights on every façade, roof-top animated scenes, and dancing Christmas trees. Visitors could view the homes by walking around Newport Beach waterfront neighbourhoods like Balboa Island and Balboa Village or by boat charter or boat rental.
FIREWORKS:
On opening night, the parade featured an exhilarating firework display from the Newport Pier, and on closing night, it featured an exhilarating firework display from the Balboa Pier.
