All is well day after the snow, the sun melted all the snow from the feeder and my little friends were able to get some much needed food.

Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, 12 miles south west and upstream of central London on the River Thames. Building of the palace began in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII. In 1529, as Wolsey fell from favour, the cardinal gave the palace to the King to check his disgrace; Henry VIII later enlarged it. Along with St James' Palace, it is one of only two surviving palaces out of the many the King owned. The palace is currently in the possession of Queen Elizabeth II and the Crown

I've been taking some mobile artistry courses and this is the result of work done on the ipad. I'm really amazed at how much these apps can do! Also, the original photo was taken with a wonderful black and white camera app called Lenka--I highly recommend it. Be sure to check out the apps Glitché and Matter. This was an abandoned church for sale in a very small Texas town.

Another in my intermittent postings of trees surviving in harsh conditions. This stunted juniper is growing out of a rock ledge at the Canyonlands Overlook, Utah.

Hope everyone has a good Monday. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

This tree survived the fire, burned at the bottom, but the top is still green.

Shot using focus stacking on the OM1. This is a great feature of the OM1, you tell it how many shots to take, press the shutter, and that is all. Yu can do it handheld, and the OM software will composite the images. It worked perfectly on this image.

Red Squirrel - Sciurus Vulgaris

Highlands, Scotland.

The red squirrel is found in both coniferous forest and temperate broadleaf woodlands. The squirrel makes a drey (nest) out of twigs in a branch-fork, forming a domed structure about 25 to 30 cm in diameter. This is lined with moss, leaves, grass and bark. Tree hollows and woodpecker holes are also used. The red squirrel is a solitary animal and is shy and reluctant to share food with others. However, outside the breeding season and particularly in winter, several red squirrels may share a drey to keep warm. Social organization is based on dominance hierarchies within and between sexes; although males are not necessarily dominant to females, the dominant animals tend to be larger and older than subordinate animals, and dominant males tend to have larger home ranges than subordinate males or females.

Red squirrels that survive their first winter have a life expectancy of 3 years. Individuals may reach 7 years of age, and 10 in captivity. Survival is positively related to availability of autumn–winter tree seeds; on average, 75–85% of juveniles die during their first winter, and mortality is approximately 50% for winters following the first.

Although not thought to be under any threat worldwide, the red squirrel has nevertheless drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom; especially after the grey squirrels were introduced from North America in the 1870s. Fewer than 140,000 individuals are thought to be left in 2013; approximately 85% of which are in Scotland, with the Isle of Wight being the largest haven in England. A local charity, the Wight Squirrel Project,[26] supports red squirrel conservation on the island, and islanders are actively recommended to report any invasive greys. The population decrease in Britain is often ascribed to the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel from North America, but the loss and fragmentation of its native woodland habitat has also played a role.

In January 1998, eradication of the non-native North American grey squirrel began on the North Wales island of Anglesey. This facilitated the natural recovery of the small remnant red squirrel population. It was followed by the successful reintroduction of the red squirrel into the pine stands of Newborough Forest. Subsequent reintroductions into broadleaved woodland followed and today the island has the single largest red squirrel population in Wales. Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour is also populated exclusively by red rather than grey squirrels (approximately 200 individuals).

Unlike the orange-crowned warbler that can easily hide its orange crown, the golden-crowned kinglet's golden crown is always on full display. This golden-crowned kinglet is catching gnats and no-see-ums in the wooded grove that acts like a little oasis for migrating songbirds in the open prairie habitat around here. After spending the summer in Canada's vast boreal forest, these hardy golden-crowned kinglets sometimes winter right here in Winneshiek County since they can survive temperatures to -40 F even though they are barely bigger than a hummingbird.

A Christian stave church constructed around 1150. It was converted to a cruciform church 1626-1628. Only the carved portals and decorative planks survived from the original stave church.

Unlikely pairing who are benefiting from each other.

I see cowbirds around cattle and horses but this is a first for me.

The brown-headed cowbird isn’t afraid to use other species to get ahead. It is adapted to a nomadic prairie lifestyle, following cattle and other animals so it can eat bugs, and laying its eggs in other prairie birds’ nests. This bird is a great example of a species that relies on other species to survive.

I already said goodbye.

Two weeks ago my Father passed away from dementia, today was his funeral, I chose to not attend, as we have been estranged for 32 years. Myself and my siblings had a very traumatic childhood because of this man, he was abusive to us all, including my Mum, and we were shown very little love from both parents due to the way he had conditioned her. We spent a large part of our childhood visiting my Mum in a mental hospital, and my older brother pretty much brought us up. I walked away from my Father when my Mum finally divorced him when I was 18. Trying to be a part of his life was too painful, he didn’t seem to care about us. To others he was a wonderful man and would do anything for anyone, but never his own family, a wife and 5 children. I grew up being told I was thick, which did nothing for my self esteem and affected my adult life hugely.

I have been in two minds as to whether to post about this on here for the last two weeks, I am not grieving him, I am grieving for my lost childhood. I have set this to disable the comments, as I am just putting this here so I have a record of it on my blog, and need to move on from this after today, and I don’t want anyone to feel sorry as I am ok, just a very surreal time, and the end of an era, after losing my Mum to cancer in November 2020.

Today we went to Butterfly world as a distraction, and also because it was too cold and wet to shoot outdoors. We had a lovely day.

The crocuses were taken in our garden a few days ago during the cold snap. They survived the storm, and they continue to bloom. ❤️

Much love to you all, dear Flickr friends.

From 'Monastic Ireland': One of the most impressive surviving Franciscan friaries in Ireland, Ross Errilly is located 2km North West of the Galway village of Headford. It was founded at some point between the mid-fourteenth and late fifteenth centuries. It’s two large chapels or ‘transepts’ more than double the space of the nave, while the two-storey domestic buildings are set around both a cloister and an outer court. The domestic buildings are particularly well-preserved due to the continued use of the friary into the eighteenth century. This gives visitors a great sense of the unfolding of the friars’ everyday life around the cloister and outer court: in the west range of the outer court is the kitchen, where there is a large fireplace with an oven, beside a deep circular stone pit, a fish tank; the refectory is located in the eastern range of the outer court, with the lector’s desk at the northwest corner of the room; various staircases led to the friars’ dormitories in the upper floors. In the church, the multiple chapels and secondary altars in the nave and its ‘double transept’, the gallery used as a preaching platform, the tomb niches, are all features associated with the devotions and religious practice of the laity, suggesting that, despite its seemingly remote foundation in a very rural landscape, the friary and the friars served the pastoral and spiritual needs of a local population important enough to fund the construction and maintenance of these structures.

All the shops closed for 3 days!

It's feeding time on a stormy early spring afternoon. We survived our 2nd round of severe weather in the last 5 days. No major damage in our immediate area but unfortunately plenty nearby. The next 7 days look great though with ample amounts of sunshine and high temperatures eventually making it into the 70s.

Taken inside Joshua Tree National Park on one of the hikes we did. I rarely use this type of post processing but I really enjoyed the way it came across for this subject matter. What do you think? Yay or Nay?

Sometimes, in a barren moorland, you come across a single tree.

Usually, they're stunted little fellas, but they have to be tough to survive in the windblown conditions.

Especially here, by the sea.

So that makes them special.

Abbey "Ten Duinen"

Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Ten Duinen, short Duinenabdij, was an abbey on the Belgian coast in Koksijde. The abbey joined the Order of Cîteaux in 1138 and was abolished in 1796, meanwhile in Bruges. The motto of the abbey was Fac necessitate virtutem; Make a virtue of necessity.

An old limb stretched his fingers upwards rustling hints of a faded autumn white it touched the others around him. A creation of wild confusion competing for the light while lush green layers cover the grey nurturing the aging limb. It will survive another spring. - Lynn Reket.

The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens are botanical gardens located 2 km North of the CBD of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia.

The gardens were established on their present site in 1886; this was the third attempt by European settlers of Darwin to establish a site where plants of economic importance could be tested for their suitability in the tropics. Initially the collection of the gardens was focussed on economic gardening and the ornamental plantings. The gardens were severely damaged during Cyclone Tracy in 1974, 89% of all plants were lost. Restoration after the cyclone was led by George Brown, who had worked at the gardens since 1969 and served as curator from 1971 to 1990, and became Lord Mayor of Darwin in 1992 until 2002. The gardens were renamed in 2002 to recognise George Brown's contribution and 32 years service to the development of the gardens.

In 2000 Darwin's historic former Wesleyan Methodist church was moved from Knuckey Street and reconstructed at the Gardens. It is the oldest surviving building in Darwin. Today, the old church building houses Eva's Botanical Gardens Cafe.

The gardens contain a major collection of Northern Australian monsoon flora; these include communities like mangroves, monsoon vine thicket, Tiwi Islands wet forest and those found on the Arnhem Land escarpment. The gardens also has a large collection of native and introduced tropical plants including cycads, palms, Adansonia, gingers and heliconias.

These deep rooted trees survive in tough Australian arid conditions. Allocasuarina decaisneana or desert oak is a medium-sized, slow-growing tree found in the dry desert regions of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. The dioecious tree typically grows to a height of 10 to 16 metres and as high as 20 m and a width of 3 to 8 m. Young trees have a narrow trunk and form and grey/green feathery foliage. They mature to an adult form with spreading limbs and bushy foliage. It is the only member of its family in Central Australia and its large cylindrical cones are the biggest in its family. Often found in swales between sand dunes they grow well in deep red sand. The species is distributed through the deserts of the eastern part of central Western Australia, in the southern portion of the Northern Territory, and in northern South Australia. It is often the only tree species to be found in these area where the dominant form of vegetation is spinifex. The tree was particularly useful to Indigenous Australian peoples who used the trees as a source of water. Water can be collected from tree hollows but surface roots could also be broken off in sections to provide potable water by draining the root when held vertically or by directly sucking the water out. The Aborigines also used the hard wood of the trees for making boomerangs, shields and clubs. A boomerang that is 10,000 years old made from Allocasuarina wood was found in Wylie Swamp in South Australia. 16240
