……As the UK currently fries in 30+°C this weeks Macro Mondays theme of “Sun Safety” is very apt! Other parts of the World have or have had worse I’m sure but ONE thing that is common throughout the World and applies to everyone (not forgetting the Animals & Plants) and that is WATER!!! this solitary thing will ensure survival!! So in my book this is Number One in any (every) Sun Safety Survival kit. HMM and keep slurping folks to stay safe in the sun. Alan:-)…….

this is from a little stall run by a very friendly family from Anhui province in a narrow lane nearby, where you can buy a simple breakfast of a bowl of noodles, eggs boiled in a fragrant herbal soup and baozi. the notes are tucked under the box so as not to fly away in the wind.

Getting ready for its 6 month revision. I will photograph it as I take it apart and will list all the contents. You may be surprised.

I'm going to show everything over the next few days but I've had a couple question by email. Dead center at the top are several items in a plastic bag. They appear to be vortex paper cups. No, they are paper coffee filters. I have several means of purifying water, but I've found I can extend the life of any kind of filter system if I used a "Pre Filter System". I can pour water thru the paper filter or seal the filter around my suction hose on my pump filter. So those vortex looking things are paper coffee filters.

still need to fit a lighter, water purification tablets & duct tape in there somehow. maybe a small swiss army knife as well.

Finally my life is settling into a new norm. What a ride it's been and one that I don't care to repeat. It's my intent to catch up with my tried and true friends here on Flickr as time permits. See you soon!

An updated photo of the modifications to the Mini Survival Kit.

Though not a Doug Ritter Survival Knife, this benchmade griptilian is a fine tool for every field work.. one of my favourite knife in 154cm steel..

I spent the afternoon in the new flat. Almost empty, so some vital needs had to be cared for before going there ....

This is, too, a wink to H@x.

Après-midi dans mon nouveau château. Encore quasiment vide, donc transport d'un kit de survie pour la cérémonie du thé.... Et l'inévitable gilet rouge..... Célèbre grâce à H@x.

We got a little paranoid after the Japanese earthquake. We live in San Francisco and we're not stupid: we know it's a matter of time before an earthquake that could knock out services for days (or worse) hits us. 'They' always tell us we need 72 hours worth of gear to be self-sufficient ( 72hours.org ) but we've never done anything about it until now. Here's 72 hours worth of water and food for us and the dogs, camping stove, 1st aid kit, flash lights, multi-tool, radio, TP (we may have to 'go' outside but I am not wiping with leaves), coffee (instant, I'm afraid, but in a disaster it will have to do as I doubt Starbucks will be open but I'll still be a caffeine addict), collars & leads, etc. I even threw in a decent crowbar and hatchet because I've watched enough zombie movies to know they might be useful. Here's hoping we never need to use any of it but at least now, when I'm asked if I have my disaster kit ready I can say "Yes" instead of mumbling something about knowing that we should but that I haven't got round to it yet.

The kit includes the following:

Food and Water:

6 Boxes of Aqua Blox Water Boxes - Up to 5 year shelf life

1 Back Country Cuisine 1 person dehydrated meal

10 Water Purification Tablets - each tablet purifies 1 litre of water

Light and Communication:

Am/Fm Radio with Batteries

Rechargeable Squeeze Flashlight - LED flashlight which generates and stores power by squeezing the handle (NO BATTERIES NEEDED),

Emergency Glow Stick - lasts for 12 hours ,

5-in-1 Survival Whistle - compass, signal mirror, flint starter, waterproof container, lanyard, and shrill whistle

Shelter and Warmth:

Emergency Survival Sleeping Bag - Recommended over common "space blankets"

16-20 Hour Body Warmer - heat up in minutes with an average temperature of 55 degrees.

2-Person Tube Tent with Rope

Emergency Poncho with Hood

Tools:

16 Function Pocket Knife,

Working Gloves, Dust Mask, 50 Feet of Nylon Rope

Hygiene and Sanitation:

24 Piece Deluxe Hygiene Kit - toothbrush, toothpaste, 9 wetnaps, bar of soap, .34 oz shampoo and conditioner, dental floss pick, .25 oz hand and body lotion, deodorant gel, twin blade razor, 5" black comb, 4 maxipads, shaving cream packet, and washcloth. 3 Tempo Pocket Tissue Packs

First Aid

36 Piece Portable First Aid Kit - contains 36 pieces - 8 spot bandages, 8 sheer junior,4 sheer medium, 4 sheer strips, 2 antibacterial, 3 clear strips, 2 fabric strips, 1 extra large, 2 alcohol pads, and 2 gauze pads

Other:

Notepad, Pencil, Deck of Playing Cards for Entertainment & Infectious Waste Bag

Size 45.72 x 30.48 x 17.78cm - 4.53kg

This pocket-sized emergency survival kit is available for U. S. Army Africa travelers. The green and black tube on the far right is representative of a personal water purification device that may be added to the kit after chemical and form and fit testing is completed in the near future. Currently, the kit contains iodine tablets (center) used for water purification. The individual purifier will be added to the kit as an alternative to the iodine tablets.
