Surf ‘n Turf, Slurp ‘n Burp; Outback Steakhouse Connection To My Life ‘n Home(s)/Land - IMRAN™

Even my food experiences amaze me with their interconnections in the stories of my life. Here’s one example of the intricate coincidences.

I love many kinds of exotic foods and what I call CCCCCC (complex culinary creation calories carriers consumption). However, sometimes I just crave one of my favorite combinations you see here. Surf ‘n Turf,… tender filet mignon and juicy lobster tail, with mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms.

It’s nothing fancy, but I’ve always appreciated Outback Steakhouse for its consistency, decent food, good service, and reasonable prices. Ironically the chain was established in USA at a very interesting moment.

It was started in 1988. That was right between my Christmas 1987 America tourism trip return to Pakistan, and my January 1989 move to attend Columbia Business School to start my American life.

I first discovered OBSH exactly 20 years ago. I was driving the East Coast Florida coastline along US A1A, looking for my first “second home” in America on the Atlantic Ocean. Somewhere along the road I asked where I could get dinner. Someone pointed me to Outback. I loved it. I even ate at several other locations during that one month driving home search.

I had chosen condo 37D at The Tiara on Singer Island to be my home and went to the nearby one regularly. I later sold my condo for a profit. I fortunately left it just before hurricane damage basically closed the building for many years.

Exactly 10 years after that Florida living experience, I was blessed to search for my second “second home”. I drove every mile of coastline of the whole state of Florida this time. That included the Florida panhandle and west/Gulf coast. I kept looking until I made Apollo Beach, on Tampa Bay, my home. Ironically my blessed fantasy home, as I call it, was completed in 1989 - the year America became my homeland.

Also ironically, the first Outback Steakhouse reportedly had opened in Tampa, Florida. That is the major city area my home is in, and that is also where I had this meal at.

Small world, big appetite, mate! Time to slurp ‘n burp after the always delicious surf ‘n turf.

My Life’s Coincidences With Surf ’n Turf Steak & Lobster - IMRAN™

A filet mignon and lobster tail are among my favorite combinations. But there’s a lot more meat to this tail’s non-tall tale than just a foodie photo. Dig in!

It was literally the night marking my starting a new life in America 36+ years ago. It was a cold and dark night - then and now. I was blessed and eternally grateful - then and now.

As I was driving home, I just wanted some surf ‘n turf for dinner. It was late. And there weren’t many restaurants open.

It wasn’t fancy but this plate filled the need that night.

Outback Steakhouse’s steaks aren’t as sumptuous now as when I first discovered the chain. That was in 2002-2003 during a 1000-miles drive through Florida. I was there to find my then-first second-home.

It was on Singer Island at the Tiara - which is on A1A next to Palm Beach Island. I think the first Outback I ate at was along that route north of there.

An interesting coincidence was that the first Outback Steakhouse opened in what became my (current) second second-home, Tampa. It opened in 1988, ironically coinciding with my coming to America in 1987-1988.

Want more coincidences with that entree? The first surf ‘n turf combo is said to have been served in the year of my birth, 1962. The food was at the Seattle Fair — which is coincidentally where my great employer Microsoft is based. There’s an extra charge if you want me to dig up more coincidences for dessert! Thanks for joining me for a dinner story.

Most of the time I like to pick Hot Wheels cars that look like real cars, but every once in a while I see a car I just think is cool. The cartoon line of hot wheels are a few that I think look great. This is the Surf’N Turf one from the Rod Squad collection. The car in the background is the Rip Rod from the HW Game Over set.

Another shot of the two tooned cars I picked up the other day. The one in the front is a woody style wagon, called Surf 'N Turf. The VW Beetle is also in the tooned style, which I'll post next.

The islands' history over the past five decades has been quiet, though there was much excitement when astronaut John Glenn landed down just off Grand Turk in 1962. At about the same time, the islands were 'discovered' by seven millionaires (including Teddy Roosevelt III and a couple of the DuPonts), who leased land from the British government and built a small airstrip for their private planes and a deep-water anchorage for their yachts. Meanwhile, Count Ferdinand Czernin, son of the last prime minister of the Austro-Hungarian empire, scouted a tiny dot on the map called Pine Cay, on which he planned a Walden Pond-like resort; after his death it became the exclusive Meridian Club resort. Then, in 1984, Club Med opened their resort and the Turks & Caicos started to boom.

Slices of sausage ("Stadtwurst") and cucumber, a salad variation topped with shrimp, decorated with fresh passion fruit. Served with 3 types of vinaigrette.

We were lucky enough to get a table for the Surf 'N Turf dinner at the Sky Bar on the top deck of the ship on our first night at sea. This is what cruising is all about.

Icelandic surf'n'turf. Lamb steak with lobster.

This was really good. Both lamb and lobster were excellent.

This is what we came for. The Black Stump is famous for their steaks. It had been twenty years since my last visit and I was not to be disappointed. The steaks were very thick, juicy and a slight char flavour. The garlic prawns were very tender and had lots of flavour. The asparagus were cooked to perfection and married well with the bernaise sauce. Having the chips in a side dish was a great idea. They were perfectly crisp and great for mopping up the bernaise sauce. We rated this meal 18/20 which equals 4 and a half stars out of 5.

The best part was using our presidential card to have the cost of one Surf&Turf main taken off our bill. Alternatively we could have printed out this coupon .

"Buy any main meal and two beverages and select a second cheaper meal free"

Seafood Chowder $6.90 x 2 = $13.80

Surf'n'Turf $28.90 2for1 = $28.90

Carafe of wine (moselle) $11
