Amsterdam - Bloemgracht

The Bloemgracht is a canal in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It connects the Prinsengracht with the Lijnbaansgracht and runs between and parallel to Nieuwe Leliestraat and Bloemstraat in the Amsterdam-Centrum district. The canal is named after the bulwark "de Bloem", later called "Rijkeroord". From 1614 a windmill was located here, but it was moved to Haarlemmerweg in 1878.
Willem Blaeu started his cartography workshop here in 1635, and it was continued by his son Joan Blaeu and his grandson Joan Junior until 1698. The Atlas Maior or Grooten Atlas by Blaeu was made on the Bloemgracht. The company was initially located on the corner of Bloemgracht / Tweede Leliedwarsstraat and later on the corner of Derde Leliedwarsstraat. In 1696 the company was dissolved. Bridge no. 120 across the Bloemgracht at the corner of the Derde Leliedwarsstraat was given the name Atlas Bridge.
The painter Rembrandt van Rijn, who lived at Rozengracht, is supposed to have had a studio on the Bloemgracht in the 1660s.
Six of the eleven Jordaan canals were filled in during the 19th century. The Bloemgracht, Egelantiersgracht, Lauriergracht, Looiersgracht and Passeerdersgracht remained as water connections between the Prinsengracht and the Lijnbaansgracht.

Support for Ukraine
I captured this image of a soybean field last fall in Knox County. I used the Skylum Luminar Neo software program to edit and filter the golden brown soybeans to yellow and deepen the blue of the sky. The Skylum company and team is based in Kyiv, Ukraine. Many on their team have remained in Ukraine and are working and sheltering. We have chosen to support Ukraine through Save the Children.

This photograph is a result of my combining 15 separate photographs, all taken with different focal planes, using a program called Helicon Focus. It allows extraordinary depth of field when making closeup and macro photographs. I’ve used it for many years and been happy with the software and with my interaction with these people. Good software, and good people.
The company that makes and supports the software is Ukrainian. They are in Kharkiv, only 30 km from the Russian border. Their website has a link to some groups who are trying to help local people in Kharkiv, as well as their PayPal information, if you want to just send them funds that they can distribute to local charities. It has felt good to me to be able to send funds knowing that they will get to where they are able to do some good. We have done so several times. I’m passing this along in case anyone else would like to do the same.
