Donnybrook in Dublin this fine sunny afternoon, people going about their business, a passing Dublin Bus to Bray, its a typical normal day, unlike those suffering in Ukraine at the hands of the Russians.
Thoughts & hopes sent to everyone in Ukraine at this very difficult time as your country is being invaded by Russia.
Shame on you Russia - shame, evil & murder of the innocent.

This is Donnybrook Garage based SG 388 on route 155.
I'll be honest. I still want to say Anti-Recast. Because I've seen people who own recasts claim to be pro artist. They don't get it, they still don't see it as a negative thing. They don't see that they can't be pro artist while literally stealing from the people who create these beautiful works of art.
So I'm Anti-Recast and Pro-Artist.

️ SPQR - Phase I is dropping imminently! To commemorate this monumental milestone, all Corinthian patrons will be receiving this one-of-a-kind kit by the end of December! ️
The Capitoline Wolf is one of the most iconic Roman / Etruscan sculptures likely preserved since antiquity. It depicts the she-wolf that found and sheltered the infants Romulus & Remus on the slopes of the Palatine Hill - some time during the early 8th century BCE, according to the myth.
At 240 parts, this is more than *twice* the promised size of the biannual exclusive kits!
To be among the first to receive this kit, you'll need to become a Corinthian patron over on my Patreon page by December 12! Your support entitles you to exclusive insights to the entire design + build process, and lends much-needed support to my artistic endeavors.
️ Rome was not built in a day, but with your help, I may just be able to do it within a few years! ️

During a brief stint in Washington D.C. in 2023, I spent the better part of a summer evening exploring the grounds of Capitol Hill. Few landscapes invite as much inquiry along winding paths paired with plenty of moments for quiet introspection on marble benches; all in picturesque view of the Capitol dome. These on-site experiences are exactly the form of anecdotal justification I seek when considering whether to recreate such monumental places in the first place.
In tackling any work of such storied precedence as the US Capitol, I always seek to expand the conversation beyond existing works in the medium of plastic bricks. While the consistent 1:650 scale among my works has always ensured some level of originality, it is no guarantee of further insight that cannot already be gleaned from existing works by other artists. With this in mind, I set out to capture the full 100-acre site currently maintained by The Architect of the Capitol. What's more, the diorama depicts a particular time of year - specifically late March to early April - as illustrated by the iconic presence of hundreds of cherry blossoms rendered in two shades of light pink.
The diorama starts downhill at the trapezoidal Capitol Reflecting Pool, with the Grant Memorial taking pride of place along its eastern edge and the US Botanic Garden across the street to the south. The diorama expands from there, capturing the radiating pathways meandering uphill, as designed by Frederick Law Olmsted within the parcels laid out in the city plan by Pierre Charles L'Enfant. The piece culminates with the widely imitated US Capitol Building, perched atop a plinth projecting from the Capitol Visitor Center on the opposite side.
Topping everything off is a custom-made representation of the Statue of Freedom (as designed by Thomas Crawford), steadfastly overlooking the National Mall from atop the dome. The statue was designed in collaboration with BigKidBrix and was sized comparably to the minifigure statuette / trophy element.
The piece was designed over the course of about two months: first in December 2023 through January 2024, paused during the build-out of SPQR - Phase II, then resumed between March and April. The build-out lasted from July through August and was completed by September. The piece will soon be added to my personal gallery of works, now available for touring exhibitions.

What could be a more monumental way of commemorating the 2,777th anniversary of the Founding of Rome than by debuting Phase II of my SPQR diorama?
With Phase II now successfully added, the diorama grows to roughly 211,000 individual plastic bricks and represents several thousand hours of research, design and build time executed over two-and-a-half years!
A smile would belie the resolute burden of committing to recreating the entire Eternal City over many years, but I'm grateful to be tempered by a constant knowing that so many are paying close attention to this impossible overview; which 1 million fourth century inhabitants never knew themselves, and one which I can only hope to faithfully represent at this scale and in these media for millions to learn from today.

I've always admired Taipei 101 from afar, but never seriously considered designing it until about ten days ago. The unique colors and tapered profile made this a worthy challenge. So I struck while the inspiration was fresh, and even ended up designing a brand new pair of wedge plates to make it all work in the end!

Design Insights XLVII
The Temple of Bonus Eventus, as the name implies, is typically a bit of a 'bonus feature' when it comes to reconstructions of the ancient city of Rome. Dedicated to the agricultural god of "Good Outcomes," the temple and surrounding portico likely replaced the Stagnum Agrippæ, a large open-air reservoir in the center of the Campus Martius. Evidence of this later temple's location is relatively scant, but its existence is attested to in several fourth century sources. What's more is that Bonus Eventus was typically paired with Lympha, a goddess who influenced water supply. In this choose-your-own-adventure timeline, I sided with the theory that the obsolete reservoir might have been replaced by a temple with whose deity the former site's had typically been paired.
Similarly, remains of the Odeum of Domitian have never been excavated. Unlike the Roman theatres where stage dramas were acted out, odea were reserved for more niche performances such as singing recitals, poetry recitation and musical performances. They were notably smaller than theatres as well, and often further distinguished by the presence of permanent roofing, rather than fabric velaria. It's anyone's guess whether the Odeum of Domitian boasted such structural features, but absence of evidence must never be mistaken for evidence of absence.
This general rule of thumb encapsulates the well-founded, yet cautiously skeptical spirit with which we will explore the Temple of Bonus Eventus and the Odeum of Domitian.

📜 Imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life for the vast majority of the Eternal City's ancient inhabitants. Most went about their business tending to their homes, venturing to the city markets or taking part in public gatherings at a local temple or basilica. Those more prone to vice might have spent their time and hard-earned sestertii gambling or in a local lupanar (pleasure house). Odds are, most would not have needed to venture beyond the Ancient Roman neighborhood of Subura to take part in any such activities. In fact, it was the extreme density and array of amenities packed within this largely disreputable quarter of the city where large percentages of the city's one million residents were once packed.

📜 The so-called Trajan's Market was once a sprawling, multi-level complex along the slopes of the Quirinal Hill. Its multitude of shops, offices and administrative buildings made for a bustling and densely packed backdrop to the spacious Imperial Fora below. Whereas the grand forums were built in the most opulent materials available, the structures of Trajan's Market were built of "less noble materials" and are, consequently, almost completely preserved to this day, as it now houses The Museum of the Imperial Forums in Trajan's Market.
