May 29, 2011, 8:14 a.m. I had seen this crazy-fun cheering section when I was running down Somerset Street West, and so when I spotted them again on Booth Street by the War Museum, it was picture-taking time !

Love the signs: "Toenails are overrated." & "The chaffing (sic) is temporary." Another one (not pictured) reads: "Run like you stole something."

Following a 401st Army Field Support Brigade command brief and a tour of the AFSBn-Bagram, Logistics Task Force Bagram redistribution property assistance team area, Maj. Gen. Robert S. Ferrell, Communications-Electronics Command commanding general and Brig. Gen. Kevin J. O’Connell, Joint Munitions and Lethality Command and Joint Munitions Command commanding general got a chance to meet some of their employees assigned to the 401st who support the Warfighter across the Combined Joint Operations Area-Afghanistan Mar. 19.

About the 401st:

The 401st Army field Support Brigade provides Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. If they shoot it, drive it, fly it, wear it, eat it or communicate with it, the 401st helps provide it. The brigade assists coalition partners with many of their logistical and sustainment needs. The brigade also handles the responsible disposition of equipment in Afghanistan to support evolving missions. We are the single link between Warfighters in the field, and working through Army Sustainment Command, we leverage Army Materiel Command’s worldwide Materiel Enterprise to develop, deliver, and sustain materiel to ensure a dominant joint force for the U.S. and our Allies.

Many large ships stop here, especially bulk carriers, either at the inner harbour anchorage, or alongside a quay, to have underwater hull cleaning carried out, or underwater inspection / maintenance by these guys, or their one or two competitors.

Here is what this company offer, as taken from their website:

"Cleaning of hulls, including propeller and rudder, although we also clean grids and any other appendage that may be required, these cleanings can be both maintenance and prior to dry dock. Polishing propellers, we have pneumatic machines, as well as hydraulics, and the right brushes for polishing propellers, up to a grade A of the Rupert scale. Plugging, we perform any type of plugging, either with conventional methods, or by installing coffer-dawns of any size. Change of anodes, screwed or welded, as well as those of printed current. Cutting and welding; we have cutting equipment, drill type, as well as thermal lance. For welding we have both mobile and installed equipment on our boats. Beaching works, we offer diver service for dry docks and work related to strandings. Rescue and refloating, we offer a quick response, whether for small boats, or large ships. Hydraulic works, installation and maintenance of emissaries, sand dredging, creation of artificial beaches, installation of buoys, repair of docks, etc.

Pontoon service, either to undertake any of these works, or for rent. Support boats, we have several boats fully equipped to undertake any work. We also perform less common tasks usually, such as offshore underwater work.

TAO generally supports orphans & vulnerable children by training their carers to create agri-businesses. Some of our projects include constructing facilities, including this project that including building 230 ferro-concrete water tanks in central and western Uganda.

This major project was funded by the Big Lottery Fund, La Chiesa Valdese (an Italian church), Isle of Man Overseas Aid Committee, Guernsey Overseas Aid Committee and Barclays Bank, Uganda. Here Ms Guilia Agostini from the Italian Embassy congratulates a couple on being the recipients of the 100th water tank.

From Wikipedia:

HMAS Success (OR 304) is a Durance class multi-product replenishment oiler serving in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Built at Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney, Australia, during the 1980s, she is the only ship of the class to be constructed outside of France, and the only one to originally not serve in the Marine Nationale (French Navy). The ship was part of the Australian contribution to the 1991 Gulf War, and was deployed to East Timor in response to incidents in 1999 and 2006. The ship was fitted with a double hull during the first half of 2011, to meet International Maritime Organisation standards.

Moreton Corbet was my main target for the afternoon and despite my later than planned arrival St Bartholomew's church was happily still open. It is a relatively small building but packed full of interest and easily one of the main highlights of the day. It sits close to the dramatic ruins of Moreton Corbet Castle, which stands immediately south of the churchyard.

The tower is very late medieval, begun in the 1530s but not finished till 1769. Inside the nave and chancel at first sight appear fairly humble, but the chancel gradually reveals it's gilded decoration and the spacious south aisle is full of monuments, many elaborate wall tablets and two large tombs with effigies; the older tomb of Richard Corbet (d.1513) and wife has been recoloured, and has weepers all around (some difficult to see owing to the general clutter engulfing two sides of it), all looking rather restored. The other tomb is of Sir Richard Corbet (d.1567) and his wife, again coloured and adorned with intriguing heraldic motifs. A small, almost domestic looking chapel opens up to the south and contains a further huge wall tablet to another Sir Richard (d.1691), all oddly proportioned with the biggest cherub head I've ever seen on such a position with a bust above under a curiously pointed arch.

The main interest in the chancel is rather more recent, thanks to it's makeover by Sir Ninian Comper which endowed it with some rich gilded stencilling, a tester canopy, new glass and further ornamental detailing including two small colonettes borne on the backs of miniature alabaster elephants.

This church is a real gem and easily one of the most enjoyable in Shropshire.

With the aim of supporting families fleeing the war in Ukraine, our library has proposed a cooperation between the Nova Hvylja Association and the book’s publisher Móra Publishing House. Together, we published eight stories from Csenge Zalka Virág’s award-winning storybook to provide them to 1,500 Ukrainian refugee families. The collection of folk tales in Ukrainian entitled Ribizli a világ végén [Ribizli at the End of the World], was published in a new Ukrainian edition, with expanded content and renewed illustrations more in line with Ukrainian traditions.

Ukrainian children and their companions took part in the extraordinary book launch upon the courtesy of the association, and the organisers entertained them with fairy tale reading, folk songs and circus performances. Among others, Hungarian actress Nelli Szűcs, Jászai Mari Prize winner, a worthy and distinguished artist of the National Theatre in Budapest, read a story from the book in Ukrainian to the audience.

At the event, Dávid Rózsa, Director General of the NSZL, Liliana Grexa, President of the Association, and Zoltán Fürjes, State Secretariat for Church, Civil Society and Nationality Affairs of the Prime Minister’s Office welcomed the guests. Dávid Rózsa emphasized that the cooperation and support for the good cause came quickly from the participants of the edition. Zoltán Fürjes’ speech focused on fairy tales, ‘the ancient shared tradition that must be rediscovered over and over again’ and ‘which can enchant us and take us out of reality’. The president of the association expressed the hope that the book will remain a lasting memory of Hungary for Ukrainian children.

Members of the 4-401st Army Field Support Battalion supervised the beginning stages of construction of new maintenance facilities at Kandahar Air Base. The facilities are capable of supporting many missions including maintenance, storage, or living quarters. The new facilities are scheduled to be completed in the next few months and are being built with the help of Afghan workers. The space will provide critical infrastructure to support the logistical and sustainment needs of U.S. and coalition forces.
