Seniors and their caregivers have many challenges today. A simple activity such as taking a daily bath may be difficult for a senior. Making a simple meal may also create numerous challenges. Medications may not be taken according to the doctors’ orders. Possibly, they may not be consumed at all. The senior may be living alone, and they may be at constant risk for falling. Does this sound familiar?

Maj. Gen. Timothy P. McHale, Deputy Commanding General—Support for U.S. Forces Afghanistan, came to visit the Soldiers, Civilians and contractors of the 401st Army Field Support Battalion—Kandahar. He met with many of the people responsible for maintaining and providing maneuver units with various types of tactical vehicles.

About the 401st:

The 401st Army field Support Brigade gives our Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. If they shoot, drive it, fly it, wear it, eat it or communicate with it, the 401st helps to provide it. The brigade also assists coalition partners with many of their logistical and sustainment needs. The brigade will also handle to responsible disposition of equipment in Afghanistan as the mission here changes. The 401st is the single link between warfighters in the field and Army Materiel Command.

To ensure that all ERW is destroyed at once, it is critical that a demolition pit is properly laid out, thus eliminating the risk of secondary detonation or unsafe fragments.

Pour veiller à ce que tous les DGE soient détruits en même temps, il est indispensable d’aménager correctement une fosse de démolition, ce qui élimine le risque de détonation secondaire ou de fragments dangereux.

HISTORY

Blackburn Meadows electricity generating station was built by the Sheffield Corporation in 1921,mainly to support the steel industry in the Lower Don Valley. The station was expanded in the 1930s, requiring the construction of Cooling Towers 6 and 7 in 1937-8 to supplement earlier square cooling towers to the north east.

These new hyperbolic shaped towers were designed by LG Mouchell and Partners. This was the same partnership responsible for the first hyperbolic cooling towers in the country (built in Liverpool in 1925) and some 150 towers subsequently built across the United Kingdom. Blackburn Meadows was one of those power stations nationalised to form part of the National Grid after the Second World War. It was decommissioned and mainly demolished in the 1970s.

ASSESSMENT

The Blackburn Meadows cooling towers are nationally rare surviving remains of pre-nationalisation large scale electricity generation. They are thought to be the only pre-1950 hyperbolic cooling towers surviving nationally, with nearly all the other 500 or so towers in the country dating to 1960or later. In addition to their early date, the association with LG Mouchell, the design features such as the banding and the thinness of the shell all give the towers interest. The addition of the spray coating of concrete following the 1964 disaster at Ferrybridge adds further interest by showing a development in the industry.

Even without the clouds of steam that signify operational examples, the cooling towers are also very prominent landmark features, providing a visual indication of the former scale and importance of the Sheffield steel industry in the Lower Don Valley.

However the two hyperbolic cooling towers are just one component of an extensive complex that formerly existed. The plant at Blackburn Meadows generated electricity by using steam turbines to turn electric generators, with the steam produced using coal fired boilers, the coal supplied by rail.

The railway system, coal handling plant, boiler complex, turbine and generating halls, as well as the switchgear for connecting the plant to the electricity grid and the earlier square cooling towers have all been lost. Water used by the steam turbines would have been maintained within a closed system, the steam leaving the turbine then passing through a condenser to change it back to hot water before being reboiled to produce steam to turn the turbine.

The cooling towers were used to cool water circulating in a separate system that was used to cool the condensers other equipment.

With the demolition of the rest of the generating station, the surviving cooling towers have lost their context so it is difficult to see how they functioned as an integrated part of a much wider plant.

Functionally, cooling towers still in use consist of far more than just the shell of the tower that survives at Blackburn Meadows. In operation, water is piped into the lower portion of the cooling tower into a complex network of pipes or troughs ending with sprinklers.

A fine mist of water is then sprayed on to a timber or asbestos lattice of staging and screens filling the lower 4-5m of the tower, with the water being cooled via natural evaporation aided by air being drawn upwards by the tower above. Any water droplets carried by this updraft are intercepted by a layer of louvers positioned above the sprinklers. In addition, operational cooling towers have a network of maintenance access ways. All bar one pipe in one of the towers has been stripped out from the cooling towers at Blackburn Meadows, leaving very little indication of how the towers actually functioned.

The Blackburn Meadows cooling towers are thus not only a very partial survival of an electricity generating station, they are also only a very partial survival of a pair of cooling towers. Even given the national context of the highly fragmentary survival of the pre-nationalisation power generation industry, designation of the Blackburn Meadows cooling towers cannot be justified.

The rest of the generating station has been lost, depriving the towers of their functional context and the loss of pipe work, staging, screens and access ways means that a highly significant part of the interest of the towers as cooling towers has also been lost.

If you’ve ever driven into Sheffield from the M1, you’ll be familiar with the Tinsley Cooling Towers - a piece of industrial landscape that’s become one of the city’s most famous landmarks. For now at least.

Three quarters of the public want them saved

The BBC online poll established www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/content/image_galleries/tins… that three quarters of the public want them saved. This makes more than half a million supporters in Sheffield and Rotherham alone. E.ON’s own poll was flawed by a mix-up of criteria.

English Heritage wrote www.tinsley-towers.org.uk/pages/english_heritage.pdf that the Towers, built in 1938, are the oldest surviving hyperbolic Cooling Towers in the UK and that their prominence provides a visual indication of the former scale and importance of Sheffield’s steel industry.

Declaration of 4,000 MPs, including majorities of 30 parliaments

Moreover, a deceleration by over 4,000 MPs from 40 countries across the globe in support of the Iranian Resistance and especially Ashraf residents was unveiled at the gathering. The MPs, including the majority of the European Parliament, the majority of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and majorities of 28 national parliaments, called for the urgent protection of Ashraf by the UN, U.S. and EU, the immediate lifting of the siege on Ashraf – especially ensuring free access to medical services – and an impartial, comprehensive and independent investigation into the crimes committed on April 8th in Ashraf

In a large and exhilarating gathering held in the Villepinte Auditorium near Paris on Saturday afternoon, 18 June 2011, Iranians called for the immediate protection of Ashraf by the UN with assistance provided by the U.S. and EU. They also condemned any kind of displacement of Ashraf residents inside Iraq, and declared their support for Europe’s peaceful long-term solution for Ashraf. The participants described maintaining the terrorist tag against the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) by the US State Department as an illegal measure and tantamount to participating in the repression of the Iranian people and Resistance. The attendees called on the U.S. government to comply with last July's verdict of the U.S. Court of Appeals in D.C. and immediately revoke the PMOI's terrorist designation.

Hundreds of prominent politicians and MPs representing a broad range of political views from countries in five continents of the globe also took part in the largest gathering of its kind by Iranian exiles. In addition to expressing their support for the Iranian Resistance and defending Ashraf’s rights, the high-profile dignitaries also called for the recognition of the National Council of Resistance by the international community

Rudolph Giuliani, former New York City Mayor and Presidential Candidate (2008); US Congressman Bob Filner; Rita Sussmouth, former Speaker of the German Parliament (1988-1998); Judge Michael Mukasey, former US Attorney General (2007-2009); Ambassador John Bruton, former Prime Minister of Ireland (1994-1997) and EU ambassador to the US (2004-2005); Jean-Pierre Brard, Member of French National Assembly; Andrew Card, White House Chief of Staff of President George Bush (2001-2006); Tom Ridge, first US Secretary of Homeland Security (2003-2005); Alejo Vidal Quadras, European Parliament Vice President; Geir Haarde, former Prime Minister of Iceland (2006-2009); Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, Head of the Labour Peers group in the House of Lords; Nariman al-Rousan, Member of Jordanian Parliament; Aude de Thuin, author and founder of the Women Forum; Sid Ahmed Ghozali, former Prime Minister of Algeria; Robert Torricelli, former U.S. Senator; Carlo Ciccioli, Member of the Italian Parliament; Jean-Charles Rielle, Member of the Swiss Federal Parliament; and Henry Leclerc, Honorary President of the Human Rights League of France.

A number of French mayors, including Jean-Pierre Béquet, Mayor of Auvers-sur-Oise; Nelly Rolland, Mayor of Villepinte; and Maurice Boscavert, Mayor of Taverny, delivered speeches and declared the support of 5,000 French mayors for the Iranian Resistance.

The ceremony was held on the eve of June 20th, the Day of Martyrs and Political Prisoners in Iran. The master of ceremony for the first part of the event was Congressman Patrick Kennedy, Member of US House of Representatives until 2011. David Amess, Member of British Parliament from the Conservative Party, took over the event for the second part.

While being accompanied by Mrs. Rezaii (the mother of 7 martyrs), Mahin Saremi and a number of French MPs, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi honored the memory of 120,000 martyrs of the Iranian people, who have fallen during the three decade struggle against the clerical dictatorship, including the martyrs of the past two years and those who lost their lives as a result of the recent criminal attack against Ashraf.

Mrs. Mahin Saremi, the wife of PMOI supporter Ali Saremi, also took part in the gathering. Ali Saremi was Iran’s most prominent political prisoner and was hanged last year by the Iranian regime after enduring 24 years of imprisonment and torture. Mrs. Saremi, who herself was arrested and imprisoned several times since the 1980s, was recently condemned to 10 years of imprisonment but managed to flee from the Iranian regime and reach Paris. Akbar, the son of Ali and Mahin Saremi, is among the residents of Ashraf.

78 FotografandoVIDA, na campanha "AJUDE a Abraçar com o seu OLHAR)

TEXTO DO ERNANIB:

Ajude!!! Divulge!!! Dê corda nesses pequenos relógios de vida.

_____________________________________________________

There is a time for planting and a time for harvesting. We are all in a hurry to live, not to die.We have time for internet, for friends, for playing, for working and we never have time to stop and help others. We have time for watching TV, reading the papers or a good book but we never have time for reading a message asking for help.

But there are the ones who don’t have any more time to lose. The ones who didn’t have time to plant. That barely have time to play. That won’t have time to say “I love you, mom, dad”. Because someone, somewhere didn’t have time to read this message, to try to know what it means, to try to know how to help. Because many times who could help don’t have the time, because it’s not an investment with short term interest or because thinks its time is too valuable to spend with somenone who doesn’t have that much time.

Stop for a moment.Try to read and get informed. The children that are about to say their goodbyes to life will be thankful for these few moments you took to help them.. Don’t let their life clocks stop just because you didn’t want to waste your time. Help them! Spread the word! Wind up these little life clocks

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The display reads:

The M981, known as the FIST-V was the first U.S. Army specialized vehicle for the Fire Support Team or Forward Observer in the U.S. Army. Introduced in 1978, the FIST-V used a M113 Armored Personnel Carrier chassis and was identical in appearance to the M901 Improved TOW Vehicle (ITV). This identical appearance helped make the fire support team less of a target on the battlefield. The ITV used the large "hammerhead" on top of the vehicle to launch TOW anti-tank missiles. The "hammerhead" on the FIST-V housed a ground / vehicle laser locator designator (G/VLLD) and a AN/TAS-4 night sight. This allowed the fire support team to locate and designate targets with the laser to be hit by precision guided artillery projectiles or aerial bombs. Inside, the M981 had seven radios and two digital message devices to communicate with the infantry or armor units it supported or the artillery fire direction center. Girl dropouts are a major problem fighting poverty in Malawi, as giving girls and women a better position and better education remains maybe the best way of all to bring change and a better future to Malawi.

At Matunduzi school we saw how the IM-funded project GESI addressed one of the causes of girl dropouts - girls falling behind in their studies due to problems doing their homework due to all the tasks they are asked to do at home.

At Matundizi school, and dozens of similar school, new reading techniques have been introduced and teachers educated in new pedagogical skills.

The reading class seen on these photos were engaging and active to the extreme... Not the least I loved seeing how much space the girls demanded, they were not rated below boys and not discriminated.

Having trained on different reading techniques by GESI, teachers at the school have used the methods to supplement primary school curriculum. One STD 2 teacher introduced supplementary readers from old curriculum books to enhance a reading culture. Through such, most pupils in Standard 2 have acquired Chichewa (Malawis majority language) reading mastery. A rare occurrence in primary schools rocked by myriad challenges.

Meanwhile, on a regular basis, mother groups, that are also getting support and organizational advice from GESI, meets with girls at the school to discuss issues for their retention and achievement. ‘We feel obliged to support our girls so that they should not experience the difficulties we have now due to lack of education.”

Mother group members raise funds for need girls, they give advice and they visit parents who withdraw their girls from schools.

Girls Education Support Initiative (GESI), is funded by IM and run by Malawian NGO Creccom. GESI is an integrated approach to address challenges facing girl children through community mobilization including meeting girls’ post-primary education cost.

The complexities are enormous and intertwine poverty and male dominated culture and put restraints on girls’ education.

IM and Creccom has pledged to promote girls education and fight these constraints.

A CH-47 Chinook crew from Bravo Company, 1-126th General Support Aviation Battalion, was called to assist aviators from the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center from Fallon, Nev., on Jan. 5, 2012. One of their Navy MH-60S Seahawk's had crash landed during a training mission high in the Toiyabe National Forest near the U.S. Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC), northwest of Bridgeport, Calif. All four crewmen aboard were able to walk away from the Dec. 21 incident but now the Navy wanted their aircraft back. The California Army National Guard flight crew from Stockton landed on a bald hilltop at 9,200 feet and was escorted to the crash site by Marines from the MWTC. Over the next few hours U.S. Marine rigging specialists from the Combat Logistics Battalion 17, specially called up from Camp Pendleton, worked with their fellow Devil Dogs trained in alpine, rock, and snow warfare, to prepare the pre-stripped helicopter for extraction. Taking guidance from a Naval MH-60S crew chief and the experts flying the tandem rotor hauling machine, the multi-service recovery team was able to pluck the 15,000 pound fallen bird, which was painted as an opposition force "enemy" aircraft, above the pine trees, down the canyon and back to the MWTC. Everyone watching, including representatives from the U.S. Forestry Service and the MWTC Environmental Office applauded the safe and successful operation. The aircraft, which lost its tail end during the hard landing, will rest on the Marines tarmac while it is subjected to further pokes and prods as key personnel continue to investigate how the incident happened. Are you a caregiver? If you are, you are playing a very important role in a loved-one’s life. As he or she’s health begins to deteriorate, they may increasingly need your help with grocery shopping, driving them to medical appointments and other errands, and even preparing meals for them. Whatever tasks you are doing as a caregiver, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed, resentful, exhausted and burnt out. These feelings are normal. Support for Caregivers
