When the 2020 Shelby GT500 goes on sale later this year, it will be the quickest- accelerating, most aerodynamically advanced street-legal Mustang ever, thanks to virtual testing in supercomputers and 3D printing.

The Universidad de la Frontera (UFRO) began operating a new high performance computing equipment with scientific capability. Its installation is part of the National Laboratory for High Performance Computing (NLHPC) project, lead by the Center for Mathematical Modeling of the University of Chile, with support and funding from the Associative Investigation Program (PIA) of CONICYT. April 18, 2013.

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (Oct. 16, 2015) -- The U.S. Army introduced its newest supercomputer, Excalibur, which will help to ensure Soldiers have the technological advantage on the battlefield, officials said.

 

The Excalibur is the 19th most powerful computer in the world. About 50 officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory Department of Defense Supercomputing Resource Center.

From 2001 to 2009, Dr. Berman served as Director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) where she led a staff of 250+ interdisciplinary scientists, engineers, and technologists. Dr. Berman is one of the two founding Principal Investigators of the National Science Foundation's TeraGrid project, and also directed the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (NPACI), a consortium of 41 research groups, institutions, and university partners with the goal of building national infrastructure to support research and education in science and engineering.

Some booths at SC07 were free form and rich in information. One does not know who sponsored this, because the branding was not apparent. It is intended — we suppose — to invite you inside to learn who is behind it.

When I was a kid (yes, there were some computers back then) the ultimate dream machine was the Cray-1. At the time, it was the fastest computer on the planet, although today a typical Pentium outperforms it by over 100 times. The coolest thing was the style, though, from the exposed miles of wiring to the fact that the base doubled as upholstered seating.

This project develops mathematics description of objects. Equations, and Matlab code will be needed to construct image of object in 3D space. There are several such problems in NETL’s research challenge list. The researcher of this project will be asked to work on one or more of them based on their own interests and background. One group of problems comes from the need to supply 3D printer an algorithm and/code with which an object can be manufactured through 3D printing. One of the objects would be a screw, and the other would be a hollow circular tube with arms at three different locations with each orientated differently around the tube. The other group of problem is represented by the image of a long rod in a curved tube. This is a simulation of the bending status of drill string in directional well, as commonly occurred in drilling an oil and gas well. The validation of the mathematic description of the object is expected to be conducted by providing 3D imaging of the objects with a series of cross section images staking over one and another. If time allow, the objects will be made to perform certain motion. For example, the motion can be rotating the screw or moving the rod downward simulating the drilling progress.

The Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) Centennial Gala, held Friday, October 20, in Aberdeen was the culminating event of a year-long celebration of APG’s 100th Anniversary. Approximately 780 people attended the Cabaret-themed event, which featured live music, a casino, dancing, comedy, fireworks, acrobats and other performers, and an After-Party at the Speakeasy. Merritt Property, which manages the Aberdeen Corporate Park on route 22 next to the Target store, donated the use of the 90,000-square foot building for the event. U.S. Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, MG Randy Taylor, local and state elected officials, and senior Army officials were in attendance, as were hundreds of members of the Harford and Cecil County communities.

 

The Gala was hosted by the APG Centennial Celebration Association, which is working to establish the APG Discovery Center in Aberdeen. This facility will house an interactive STEM educational space for learners of all ages to experience science and technology through hands-on exhibits and demonstrations.

 

During 2017, the APG community hosted over 150 events during 2017 to commemorative APG’s 100-year history. The Live Fire, the APG Memorial dedication, the Rosie the Riveters movie, exhibits at the college and libraries, historical talks and presentations, and Science Cafes.

Mickey Leland research associate Diana Alvarado working in the lab with mentor Biswanath Dutta. Diana is working on the Reaction Engineering Team at NETL studying Synthesis and Characterization of high-energy-surface structures/facets for alkane dehydrogenation reactions. In this research, Diana will learn how to conduct database searching and how to use NETL supercomputer Joule 2.0 to perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations and lattice phonon dynamics simulation with existing software packages (VASP, PhonoPy, etc.). This project is directly related to our research tasks of the on-going NETL Carbon Capture FWP on developing CO2 capture & utilization technologies for fighting global warming.

The Diefenbunker is a four-story, 100,000 square foot underground bunker, built between 1959 and 1961. During the Cold War it was intended to house 535 Canadian government officials and military officers in the event of a nuclear war. It served as Canadian Forces Station Carp until 1994.

For years it protected us from 75 feet underground and we knew virtually nothing about it. Today, it operates as a not-for-profit, charitable museum and boasts award winning tours and programs.
