Chevrolet Corvette

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Chevrolet Corvette, known colloquially as the Vette, is a sports car manufactured by Chevrolet. The car has been produced through seven generations.

The first model, a convertible, was designed by Harley Earl and introduced at the GM Motorama in 1953 as a concept show car. Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette.

Originally built in Flint, Michigan and St. Louis, Missouri, the Corvette is currently manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky and is the official sports car of the Commonwealth of Kentucky."

- Second generation-C2 (1963–1967)

- Third generation-C3 (1968–1982)

- Fourth generation-C4 (1984–1996)

"The Chevrolet Corvette (C4) was a sports car that was produced by Chevrolet for the 1984 through 1996 model years.

The convertible returned In 1986, as did higher performing engines, exemplified by the 375 hp (280 kW) LT5 found in the ZR-1.

In early March 1990, the ZR-1 would set a new record for the highest 24 hour-5,000 mile land-speed by going over 175 mph (282 km/h).

Though prices rose even as sales declined, the fourth generation Corvette won its own loyal following as one of the United States' most desirable sports cars.

The last C4 was produced on June 20, 1996."

"In 1986, the second Corvette Indy Pace Car was released.

It was the first convertible Corvette since 1975.

A Center High Mounted Signal Light (CHMSL) – a third center brake light – was added in 1986 to comply with safety regulations. While the color of the pace car used in the race was yellow, all 1986 convertibles also had an Indy 500 emblem mounted on the console, making any color a "pace car edition". In 1987, the B2K twin-turbo option became available from the factory."

Dart Pro 1 Platinum 215 port Heads,72cc chambers.2.05In.1.60Ex. valve size.1.890"Valve Guide spacing, moved .030" from stock.Intake side 400 Steam Holes added.Dart claims 276cfm @ .600" lift,Im not sure what bore fixture size was used for the test,my 406 is 4.155" bore,Dart recommends 4.125" or larger bore for the 215 port so I would guess that the flow was tested with that size fixture, because I found some data on these heads tested with the 4.155"fixture and they flowed:

.200 152/125

.300 203/152

.400 240/178

.500 273/195

.600 289/205

.700 293/208

Most of the flow data that I found for compairison is tested on a 4.060" bore fixture for a small block Chevy,{if it's even mentioned} any head will flow more when tested on a larger bore fixture.

The general idea for this build was to make the engine put out power like a big block,in a small block package when I was shopping for a cylinder head.I referenced some cylinder head flow numbers for big block engines for a general compairison.

'70-'71 Chevy big block,open chamber,rectangular port,2.19"/1.88" valve size:

.200" 129/88

.300" 188/129

.400" 233/154

.500" 259/172

.600" 291/177

'69-'72 Chevy big block,closed chamber,rectangular port,2.19"/1.72" valve size:

.200" 137/104

.300" 205/132

.400" 248/156

.500" 287/174

.600" 319/182

Chevy big block,L88/ZL1,3rd design,aluminum,open chamber,rectangular intake/C-port exhaust,{ported},2.25"/1.92" valve size:

.200" 155/119

.300" 227/151

.400" 274/182

.500" 304/206

.600" 335/228

For a out of the box,as cast cylinder head with a smaller cross-section,I thought they compaired pretty well with a big block head.

Man it looks like a truck now to bad it has to be torn back apart for body and paint work. I should drive it just like this.lol

Just for fun I put the 55 210 wheels on the truck to see how it would look.

I still have a little metal finishing to do but I ran out of sanding disc, but you can get a good I idea of how it will look. Man this is a lot of welding and grinding. The angle strips are continued around the tub and also notice no fender bolts.

This is this section I will cut out. I marked it so that on inch will be cut out the front to give it slight tilt.

After break-in check up,it's got plenty of cylinder pressure for pump gas,but no sign of detonation.I was building for as much compression that I could get away with on pump gas to try and hit my HP/TQ target,by the cranking pressure it looks like I hit that target{compression}.It tells me that the cam/compression combo is on the money, but I think if it was pulled hard on a hot day detonation would show up? I'm not going to test that idea. This was a good article I found on the subject:

www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/hardcore...

David Vizard states in the article for engines of his own utilizing a near-zero leakage ring package and intended for use with 93 octane fuel,200-210 psi. is his preferable target. For every octane number less than 93,the compression pressure needs to be about 5 psi. less to avoid detonation under normal circumstances.

This build was done with over 1 full point less static compression ratio than I used, and still out did the HP/TQ range target I was building for,and would be much more happy on pump gas:

In hindsight, I could have used alittle more cam overlap to help "crutch" the cranking pressure, but a lower vacuum reading would be the consequence, hopefully the quench volume theory holds true, for now I will have to keep some good gas in it for hot weather,I imagine it will loose some cylinder pressure as it wears out.

As you can see I tack welded the hood to the truck so that nothing will move. Also the top line is cut first.

This is this section I will cut out. I marked it so that one inch will be cut out the front to give it slight tilt. The bottom cut line is tampered to meet up to the top right right the turn on the hood.
