This is the so-called Sonnenrad (sun wheel) at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Germany. This ride, which takes you through, above and below the coking plant, is a part of the old coal mine and processing plant that has been declared a site of world cultural heritage. A wonderful place to explore, especially if you have such a good guide as I did...

Kilns and the "sun wheel" at the Zollverein coking plant
With the so-called "sun wheel" you could drive through the kilns until 2010, where previously coal was burned to coke at over 1,000 ° C and on the other side you had a nice overview of the world heritage site.

This sun symbol is over five thousand years old, and can be seen in the chamber of the passage tomb Cairn T at Loughcrew in Co.Meath (Ireland).
Took this shot on my (surprise, surprise) morning bike ride. :-)
Speaking of sunwheel, I robbed the name from an old favorite song of mine.
I would not have agreed to go to Disneyland if not for a chance to shoot this fun scene : P
You can check out the rest of my Disneyland set here.
One of three which were in our cottage, very likely from around the time it was built. More information about North Wales carved slates in the book Llechi Cerfedig Dyffryn Ogwen - The Carved Slates of Dyffryn Ogwen. Although a variety of carved slate pieces and types exist, these long slates were thought to be used as decoration between the legs of Welsh Dressers, and were fashionable between the 1820's and 1840's - some are dated - amongst the quarry-men and their families. After the vogue many were discarded - this may have coincided with the quarries employing skilled slate carvers to make fireplaces, etc, and the naive art comparing unfavourably. Now, they are increasingly being recognised as some of the foremost folk art of the British Isles, and there are several collectors locally.

Disney's California Adventure Park is a Disney theme park in Anaheim, California, adjacent to Disneyland Park and part of the larger Disneyland Resort. It opened on February 8, 2001.
The park has a California theme -- the original proposal was to build a park sporting an experience similar to stepping inside a picturesque postcard. This concept spawned the idea for the park's entrance. Just beyond the gates of the park, the Disneyland Monorail passes over a miniature Golden Gate Bridge; various areas of the park were designed to recreate different California landmarks. The overall intention was to create a more adult-themed park than Disneyland, including faster, scarier rides; shows designed more for an adult audience; and a large number of restaurants. Unlike Disneyland Park, alcohol is served in California Adventure.
its almost as if the person who designed this part of disney's california adventure had photographers in mind because there was a nice spot right across the pond that was away from the busy foot traffic and so it was possible to set up tripods and not incur the wrath of the disneyland castmembers (employees).

So I guess the real irony of this shot is that after weeks of dropping everything to drive like a maniac down to the resort to try to catch a decent sunset, I had just convinced myself that I was NOT going to drive back down again regardless of how amazing the sky looked. But my son and his girlfriend needed a ride down to Disneyland, so I grudgingly told them I would take them. Annnnd....I brought my camera just in case.
But as soon as I got out of the car, I could tell that we were in for a good one. I muttered a quick goodbye to my son (who wasn't that sad to see me taking off so quickly) and I bolted straight for Paradise Pier.
As for this shot, (5 shot handheld bracket using the Nikkor 14-24) I tried a new spot on the pier over by the Cove Bar rather than where I usually shoot from down at the end by Screamin. At some point last year, they moved some trees onto that section and now, as a photographer, you have a Sophie's choice of sorts between losing Mickey's face on the Sunwheel, or the Paradise Pier lettering on the left. I thought that this spot wasn't a bad alternative.
finally got some good weather up here...might be a little too saturated..but i like the color...

I guess it figures that my first official post of 2013 would be of Paradise Pier. We've had a number of storms blow through Southern California recently and my go-to spot on stormy afternoons has been this pier as it gives the best view of the sky at the Disneyland Resort along with the Fun Wheel and that amazing reflection in the foreground. The title of this shot is not so much a pun as much as a nod to the former title of that attraction. As I was shooting and just about to give up and the sky was turning increasingly blah, suddenly a few more clouds blew over and the sun came out. I stopped down to F22 and tried my best to get a sunburst from the Nikkor 14-24. I still feel that the Sigma 10-20 gives a much better burst at smaller apertures, but the Nikkor isn't bad if you catch it on a good day. If you click on the larger size above, you can see the "Sun Wheel" a bit better. Thanks for looking!

Another mixed-media piece derived from my last self-portrait session. This one got a bit wonky because I tried to outline my facial features and failed miserably, so I decided to Fix Things by Scribbling, A+++. At some point in the process I was ready to scrap the whole thing, but I'm ultimately glad I didn't. Forcing myself to go through with projects that seem "failed" to me has been a huge part of my art journey over the past couple years. I've made some pieces I love through this method, and some pieces I'm just okay with -- but most valuably, I think, I've bolstered my ability to see potential past bumps in the road. Craftsmanship vibes.
