Shot during an afternoon's exploration of Blitz Beach in Crosby, Merseyside.

This section of Crosby Beach, in Merseyside, is the result of building up the coastal defences by using rubble brought from Liverpool city centre after the bombing of the Luftwaffe during WW2. Between 1940-1942 Liverpool was the second most heavily bombed city in Britain, second only to London. 'Blitz Beach' as it became known locally, features ornately carved marble sections, large chunks of walls - both from outside and inside the buildings, and some still have coloured plaster or tiles stuck to them. There are even gravestones to be seen in the rubble exposed on the beach, or slowly appearing out of the bank at its head as the face is eroded by the elements. Each piece is now being worn down by the actions of wind and sea, whether they are humble bricks being smoothed and rounded, ornately carved sandstone ground down, or someone's bathroom wall being washed away. Situated alongside the iconic world-famous artwork 'Another Place' by Antony Gormley, the peace and stillness of Blitz Beach fills visitors with emotion as they try to imagine the horrors suffered by the people of Liverpool at the time of the bombings. Each piece of rubble there tells a story, and visitors end up wondering which elegant and impressive buildings were destroyed to create them.
