Sun savvy little girl...

Sue's riding horse Sunsmart is still recovering from the loss of his mare and best buddy, but is slowly making friends with a tiny 20-year-old Caspian mare we adopted to help fill the gap. As both these horses are easy keepers, they are in the diet paddock together at least 16 hours a day most days of the growing season. This has been promoting their bonding. It's nice to see them starting to voluntarily graze in close proximity during daytime free ranging. Usually one or the other of the boys will be near her, and increasingly, all three rest close together as a group.

Julian came down on the horse bus late in the evening on Monday, 27/11/2017. As it was quite dark, we put him in our shelter yard with Romeo across from him for the night. First light, I let him out to say hello to Sunsmart and Chasseur across the main paddock gate. The rope is precaution to space the horses so they can sniff, but not do any shenanigans near the fence.

On the other hand, a bucket can be fun, especially when you have all your sunsmart gear on!

Sunsmart is one of the horses descended from French Trotter mare Dame du Buisson, the foundation mare for the small trotting stud / racing stables that Sue's family set up in Australia. He is a particularly sturdy and tough individual, and displayed extraordinary endurance in his harness training. He would effortlessly run ten laps of the deep sand track and ask, “Shall we keep going?” He never experienced a day's unsoundness in his life, and his work ethic is excellent, but he is relaxed and sensible, and happy to slow down as well as run fast, and learn all sorts of things. Sue has been riding him post-harness training for over six years, and she sees many of the qualities in him that were in his French great-grandmother, whom she rode for two years as a child. Like all French Trotters, he has a very pronounced breastbone and massive shoulders, is solidly muscled, and does an effortless floating trot at gallop speeds. He is also a natural at jumping. Sue is very tall at 180cm, which should put the horse's size in perspective.

Tacking up Sunsmart for a trail ride. Mary Lou is very interested in the hoof boot Sue is putting on her horse. She is probably hoping it is edible. Both donkeys are in their grazing muzzles for free-range turnout without adding to their already ample weight. Grazing muzzles allow for slow grazing only.

The (treated) Cushings still shows up in the coat - but thankfully the horse is in very good shape otherwise, for a 24-year-old especially - with or without Cushings...
