A halo around the sun is a fairly common phenomenon. It is typically caused when there are very high, very thin clouds. These clouds, being so high in the sky, are made from ice crystals. ... Since high clouds typically proceed unsettled weather, it is said a halo around the sun or moon means rain or snow is on the way. Wikipedia

Another special winter sun scenario I was lucky to capture on the Lofoten islands on our daily errands. I love these weather moods so very much.

Ice crystals ,

A Sun halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22° angle, creating a circular halo around the Sun.

A wonderful winter sunrise over the Norwegian Sea as seen from the road to Henningsvaer on the Lofoten islands. The sun halo was produced by a quick intermezzo of snowfall which lasted maybe 3 minutes :)

A picture I snapped in March of 2019. I got a reminder of it on facebook and decided to do a redo to post here. A lot of color and exposure editing was done on this picture.

Ring Around The Sun...

In February we made our way to Heart Lake and spent a few hours braving the cold to get some shots.

When we got to the lake the wind was fierce from the west and the chill bit deep into our cheeks. even making our eyes sting and water up. A sun halo was encircling the brilliant sun through the wispy thin clouds that hung like smoke in the sky.

I'm not 100% sure of the correct name of this optical phenomenon but an internet search would suggest that it is probably an Ice Rainbow, especially as it occurred in conjunction with a halo around the sun. Very happy for someone to correct me though if this is not the case.

Another possibility is a "Circumzenithal Arc" but the colours are in the opposite order.

Mid-day sun halo on 8th Sept 2021

Far above the Antarctic Circle in the Ross Sea, we were treated to a double sundog, which is a bright spot to both sides of the sun. As is apparently often the case, the double sun dog flanked the sun within a 22º halo.

Generally indicative that bad weather was approaching. This prediction was right on the mark.

I captured this scene at sunrise from our cabin as icicles hung from our balcony door frame.

Some pretty intense atmospherics on Lindisfarne last week. Apparently this is caused by the reflection and refraction of light by tiny ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Such big skies up there.

Press L - gives it some more impact.

Caught this striking sun halo at a local beach yesterday. It was so bright I had to bracket several exposures, 1/640 f.22 (ISO 250) being the best.

Apparently it arises from a very thin layer of cirrus cloud made up of ice crystals. The cloud can be so thin it may hardly be visible. As it passes in front of the sun the ice crystals cause the light to refract, causing a halo to form.

That concludes today’s meteorology lesson!

Very many thanks to everyone who has message me about my eye. I'm just trying to get out and forget about it ...thank heavens I can still use the camera.

The refraction of sunlight as it passes through ice crystals in high, thin clouds produces a sun halo, and silhouettes the dried and empty seed pods of last year's milkweed. Milkweed is an important food source for Monarch Butterflies. Taken in the Spring Creek Gap Glades Natural Area of Missouri, this and other images from the area can be seen at my latest blog post.

Just as a sentinel keeps watch over its domain, trees stand sentinel over the land, their branches reaching towards the sky like outstretched arms, embracing the world around them bridging the earthly and the ethereal.

These silent guardians stand witness to the passage of time, offering shade and shelter to all who seek them.

While touring Israel we were able to visit Masada and the weather while we were there was absolutely beautiful with perhaps the brightest blue skies I've ever seen complete with iridescent clouds and halos.

I will add some shots of the site of the fort itself in the future, but until I do so thought I'd share a little bit of the story about what happened there. Masada is an ancient fort in southern Israel and dates back to 100 BC. Herod the Great built two palaces on the site in the event that he needed to escape from a revolt. Then in 70 AD, after the Romans had destroyed the temple and most of Jerusalem, a group of Judean rebels fled to Masada. A legion of 8,000 Romans pursued this last group of 960 people Jews (including many women and children). They tried a variety of tactics to overtake the rebels. Finally they built a huge earth ramp and pushed siege tower up it. When they entered the fortress they found that the town had been burned to the ground (except for the food, they wanted them to know that they had enough provisions to survive) and everyone was dead. They preferred death at their own hands to slavery or execution. Jewish historian recorded this having been given a full account of the siege by two women who survived by hiding with their five children. A mini-series and movie were both made about the siege at Masada and until recently members of the Israeli army were sworn in at Masada so that they would feel a connection to this type of heroism.

Came upon this sundog while on a walk in our neighborhood. The flicker of bright light from the sun at its center grabbed my attention as the sky morphed and the halo formed. The patterns, light and colors were mesmerizing. Here are a few others I've captured over the years: flic.kr/p/2phUkHr, flic.kr/p/2nAkMz2 and flic.kr/p/2pJSKN7 .

I haven't gotten a good photo of a full sun halo before with iPhones. I tried a panoramic shot this time with better results. Got creative with contrast, etc.

The sun halo was a nice consolation since the sunset was a non-event! Yellowstone National Park.
