We interrupt our regularly scheduled Iceland landscape programming to bring you recent footage of an event in Death Valley California, where the desert dunes at Mesquite seemingly summoned forth the mighty forces of howling wind and apocalyptic rain to scour themselves clean of all traces of human intrusion. This buried branch of some once mighty Mesquite tree crooks its withered arm to conjure up forces of power beyond imagining (well actually, I stuck around to watch from the safety of my car, so I can now imagine them pretty well).
All fictional allegories aside, I managed to free up a late afternoon from a conference in Vegas and I was trying to decide where to go shoot, but we'd been surrounded by some crappy weather for several days and it looked to me like the only hope of an opening was to the west over Death Valley, so that's where I headed, dreaming of finally getting that burning sunset over some water-filled polygons on the Badwater basin. However, when I crested the road near Furnace creek and could see the basin stretched out, I saw a distinct cloud of sand dust over what I guessed would be Mesquite Dunes and so changed my plans to head in to the heart of the sandstorm. Having seen many great windswept dune pictures over the years but never having managed to get one myself, I figured I had a chance at doing both that AND sunset over at Badwater. Sometimes I get greedy as a photographer and my eyes grow wider than my mental scheduler and reasonable speed limits can deliver. In any case, I arrived at Mesquite pleased to find the wind whipping up a frenzy of sand and that the wind had erased what are normally an army's worth of footprints all over the dunes. So glory be, I had a chance. Many shots (and mouthfuls of grit) later, I did come away with some interesting pics, as well as with more lessons in shooting in windy conditions.
Unfortunately my sunset plans were blown (pun intended) by a layer of cloud that popped up right at the last minute to obscure the sun. However, these terrific storm clouds coming in from the north over the Funeral mountain range provided an interestingly gloomy backdrop to the late afternoon sun rays illuminating the dust clouds. Heck, I didn't even have to make up fictional names to go with my fire-and-damnation title, Death Valley is full of grim sounding names already!

The "creature" that stands before you arose from a smoke photography session comprised of a few burning incense sticks and off camera flash. The original image I captured was then worked a bit in post-processing, and mirrored to form this final image.
It's funny how many different abstract objects you can find in these types of pics, but this one really stuck out to me as as an old style sci-fi monster... I'm wondering if you see it that way as well?

Summoned from the school classroom as a 16-year-old to make his first-class debut in 1990, Herschelle Gibbs's feet moved beautifully at the crease but struggled to find the ground in real life. Admitting that a Test debut in front of 70,000 at Eden Gardens wasn't as nerve-wracking as sitting his final exams, as well as the fact that he reads little outside of magazines and comics, contributed to a reputation for simplicity. In fact, Gibbs can be a warm and generous person. His passion for one-liners and verbal jousting continues to hamper his advancement as a serious professional, and his brush with career death in the Cronje match-fixing scandal added to the impression of a man who had failed to grasp the magnitude of his impact on the nation's youth. A life-skills programme with the former Springbok rugby legend Morne du Plessis during the 2001 off-season was designed to address the matter.
At the crease, however, Gibbs can be invincible. There is no shot beyond his compass, while Test-match opening has not tempered his desire for explosive entertainment. The speed of his hands is hypnotic, frequently allowing him to hook off the front foot and keep out surprise lifters. His trademark is the lofted extra-cover drive, hit inside-out with the certainty of a square cut. Sporting comparisons can be odious, but in the field - at backward point - he really is the next Jonty Rhodes. Arguably his most famous innings came in a record-breaking one-day contest against Australia at Johannesburg when South Africa chased down an improbable 434 in 49.5 overs. Gibbs' contribution was a 111-ball 175 to power the hosts to a 3-2 series win in perhaps the greatest cracker of all. Having avoided touring India since 2000, Gibbs made himself available for the Champions Trophy in October 2006 and was selected in South Africa's 14-man squad. A lean trot continued into late November, but Gibbs showed glimpses of a return to form with a match-winning unbeaten 93 in a series clincher against India at home.
Gibbs was banned for two Tests by the ICC after being was charged under Level 3.3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct for making abusive comments about a section of the crowd during the Test series against Pakistan in early 2007. He was showing a return to somewhere near his best during the 94 at Centurion Park, which formed a rare period of bat-dominated action. His future appears to be in the middle order, unless the desperation for an opener forces him up. On March 16, 2007, during a World Cup game against Netherlands, Gibbs smashed himself into the record books. His six sixes off Dan van Bunge's fourth over was a record for international matches and he managed 342 runs, with four half-centuries, in the tournament. In 2008 he signed for Glamorgan's Twenty20 side.
Photoshop composites are usually not my strong suit, but every once in a while you get an idea you think might work... In this case, I took a photo in front of the fire, then caught some good captures of flame, and interwove them. Because it's a selfie and light was low, there are some IQ issues. There are a bunch of things I might do to improve the shot. We'll see if I decide for a second try...
