Arts for Learning Maryland led guests on a tour of three summer learning programs in Baltimore City: Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA), Summer Arts for Learning Academy at Goodnow, and the Bloomberg Arts Internship.

Classroom teachers and teaching artists developed learning strategies for the classroom, prepared lesson plans, and trained in mindfulness and restorative practice.

Attendees joined the National Summer Learning Association's Program Quality Team for a day of in-depth summer program planning and quality training before the official kick off of the 2014 Summer Changes Everythingâ„¢ national conference on Summer Learning in San Antonio, Texas.

Students engage in Math and Literacy lessons with both an academic teacher and a teaching artist every day at Summer Arts for Learning Academy (SALA). They learn and reinforce skills through art projects and activities, giving students voice, making the learning accessible and fun, and preventing summer learning loss.

 

At a mid-program celebration, students shared dance, visual art, and theatrical performances with families and caregivers!

After reading a story all about the sun, students in SummerREADS at James McHenry Elementary learned a Cherokee Sun Dance with artist Marsha Searle of Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble!

The New York Life Excellence in Summer Learning Award recognizes outstanding summer programs that demonstrate excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting healthy development for young people between kindergarten and twelfth grade.

 

These high-quality programs are measured against the National Summer Learning Association's (NSLA) Comprehensive Assessment of Summer Programs (CASP).
