Google is an American multinational technology company focusing on search engine technology, online advertising, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, artificial intelligence,[9] and consumer electronics. It has been referred to as "the most powerful company in the world"[10] and one of the world's most valuable brands due to its market dominance, data collection, and technological advantages in the area of artificial intelligence.[11][12][13] Its parent company Alphabet is considered one of the Big Five American information technology companies, alongside Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California. Together they own about 14% of its publicly listed shares and control 56% of the stockholder voting power through super-voting stock. The company went public via an initial public offering (IPO) in 2004. In 2015, Google was reorganized as a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. Google is Alphabet's largest subsidiary and is a holding company for Alphabet's Internet properties and interests. Sundar Pichai was appointed CEO of Google on October 24, 2015, replacing Larry Page, who became the CEO of Alphabet. On December 3, 2019, Pichai also became the CEO of Alphabet.[14]
The company has since rapidly grown to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions. These products address a wide range of use cases, including email (Gmail), navigation (Waze & Maps), cloud computing (Cloud), web browsing (Chrome), video sharing (YouTube), productivity (Workspace), operating systems (Android), cloud storage (Drive), language translation (Translate), photo storage (Photos), video calling (Meet), smart home (Nest), smartphones (Pixel), wearable technology (Pixel Watch & Fitbit), music streaming (YouTube Music), video on demand (YouTube TV), artificial intelligence (Google Assistant), machine learning APIs (TensorFlow), AI chips (TPU), and more. Discontinued Google products include gaming (Stadia), Glass,[citation needed] Google+, Reader, Play Music, Nexus, Hangouts, and Inbox by Gmail.[15][16]
Google's other ventures outside of Internet services and consumer electronics include quantum computing (Sycamore), self-driving cars (Waymo, formerly the Google Self-Driving Car Project), smart cities (Sidewalk Labs), and transformer models (Google Brain).[17]
Google and YouTube are the two most visited websites worldwide followed by Facebook and Twitter. Google is also the largest search engine, mapping and navigation application, email provider, office suite, video sharing platform, photo and cloud storage provider, mobile operating system, web browser, ML framework, and AI virtual assistant provider in the world as measured by market share. On the list of most valuable brands, Google is ranked second by Forbes[18] and fourth by Interbrand.[19] It has received significant criticism involving issues such as privacy concerns, tax avoidance, censorship, search neutrality, antitrust and abuse of its monopoly position.
In March 1999, the company moved its offices to Palo Alto, California,[52] which is home to several prominent Silicon Valley technology start-ups.[53] The next year, Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords against Page and Brin's initial opposition toward an advertising-funded search engine.[54][22] To maintain an uncluttered page design, advertisements were solely text-based.[55] In June 2000, it was announced that Google would become the default search engine provider for Yahoo!, one of the most popular websites at the time, replacing Inktomi.
In 2003, after outgrowing two other locations, the company leased an office complex from Silicon Graphics, at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, California.[59] The complex became known as the Googleplex, a play on the word googolplex, the number one followed by a googol zeroes. Three years later, Google bought the property from SGI for $319 million.[60] By that time, the name "Google" had found its way into everyday language, causing the verb "google" to be added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, denoted as: "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet".[61][62] The first use of the verb on television appeared in an October 2002 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.[63]
Additionally, in 2001 Google's investors felt the need to have a strong internal management, and they agreed to hire Eric Schmidt as the chairman and CEO of Google.[49] Eric was proposed by John Doerr from Kleiner Perkins. He had been trying to find a CEO that Sergey and Larry would accept for several months, but they rejected several candidates because they wanted to retain control over the company. Michael Moritz from Sequoia Capital at one point even menaced requesting Google to immediately pay back Sequoia's $12.5m investment if they did not fulfill their promise to hire a chief executive office, which had been made verbally during investment negotiations. Eric wasn't initially enthusiastic about joining Google either, as the company's full potential hadn't yet been widely recognized at the time, and as he was occupied with his responsibilities at Novell where he was CEO. As part of him joining, Eric agreed to buy $1 million of Google preferred stocks as a way to show his commitment and to provide funds Google needed.
Google generates most of its revenues from advertising. This includes sales of apps, purchases made in-app, digital content products on Google and YouTube, Android and licensing and service fees, including fees received for Google Cloud offerings. Forty-six percent of this profit was from clicks (cost per clicks), amounting to US$109,652 million in 2017. This includes three principal methods, namely AdMob, AdSense (such as AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search, etc.) and DoubleClick AdExchange.
In addition to its own algorithms for understanding search requests, Google uses technology its acquisition of DoubleClick, to project user interest and target advertising to the search context and the user history.
In 2007, Google launched "AdSense for Mobile", taking advantage of the emerging mobile advertising market.
Google Analytics allows website owners to track where and how people use their website, for example by examining click rates for all the links on a page. Google advertisements can be placed on third-party websites in a two-part program. Google Ads allows advertisers to display their advertisements in the Google content network, through a cost-per-click scheme.[138] The sister service, Google AdSense, allows website owners to display these advertisements on their website and earn money every time ads are clicked.[139] One of the criticisms of this program is the possibility of click fraud, which occurs when a person or automated script clicks on advertisements without being interested in the product, causing the advertiser to pay money to Google unduly. Industry reports in 2006 claimed that approximately 14 to 20 percent of clicks were fraudulent or invalid.[140] Google Search Console (rebranded from Google Webmaster Tools in May 2015) allows webmasters to check the sitemap, crawl rate, and for security issues of their websites, as well as optimize their website's visibility.

Google offers Gmail for email, Google Calendar for time-management and scheduling, Google Maps for mapping, navigation and satellite imagery, Google Drive for cloud storage of files, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides for productivity, Google Photos for photo storage and sharing, Google Keep for note-taking, Google Translate for language translation, YouTube for video viewing and sharing, Google My Business for managing public business information, and Duo for social interaction. In March 2019, Google unveiled a cloud gaming service named Stadia. A job search product has also existed since before 2017, Google for Jobs is an enhanced search feature that aggregates listings from job boards and career sites.
Some Google services are not web-based. Google Earth, launched in 2005, allowed users to see high-definition satellite pictures from all over the world for free through a client software downloaded to their computers.
Software
Google develops the Android mobile operating system, as well as its smartwatch, television, car, and Internet of things-enabled smart devices variations.
It also develops the Google Chrome web browser, and Chrome OS, an operating system based on Chrome.
Hardware
In January 2010, Google released Nexus One, the first Android phone under its own brand. It spawned a number of phones and tablets under the "Nexus" branding until its eventual discontinuation in 2016, replaced by a new brand called Pixel.
In 2011, the Chromebook was introduced, which runs on Chrome OS.
In July 2013, Google introduced the Chromecast dongle, which allows users to stream content from their smartphones to televisions.
In June 2014, Google announced Google Cardboard, a simple cardboard viewer that lets user place their smartphone in a special front compartment to view virtual reality (VR) media.
Other hardware products include:
•Nest, a series of voice assistant smart speakers that can answer voice queries, play music, find information from apps (calendar, weather etc.), and control third-party smart home appliances (users can tell it to turn on the lights, for example). The Google Nest line includes the original Google Home (later succeeded by the Nest Audio), the Google Home Mini (later succeeded by the Nest Mini, the Google Home Max, the Google Home Hub (later rebranded as the Nest Hub), and the Nest Hub Max.
•Nest Wifi (originally Google Wifi), a connected set of Wi-Fi routers to simplify and extend coverage of home Wi-Fi.
Enterprise services
Google Workspace (formerly G Suite until October 2020) is a monthly subscription offering for organizations and businesses to get access to a collection of Google's services, including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides, with additional administrative tools, unique domain names, and 24/7 support.
On September 24, 2012, Google launched Google for Entrepreneurs, a largely not-for-profit business incubator providing startups with co-working spaces known as Campuses, with assistance to startup founders that may include workshops, conferences, and mentorships. Presently, there are seven Campus locations: Berlin, London, Madrid, Seoul, São Paulo, Tel Aviv, and Warsaw.
On March 15, 2016, Google announced the introduction of Google Analytics 360 Suite, "a set of integrated data and marketing analytics products, designed specifically for the needs of enterprise-class marketers" which can be integrated with BigQuery on the Google Cloud Platform. Among other things, the suite is designed to help "enterprise class marketers" "see the complete customer journey", generate "useful insights", and "deliver engaging experiences to the right people". Jack Marshall of The Wall Street Journal wrote that the suite competes with existing marketing cloud offerings by companies including Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce, and IBM.
Internet services
In February 2010, Google announced the Google Fiber project, with experimental plans to build an ultra-high-speed broadband network for 50,000 to 500,000 customers in one or more American cities.[178][179] Following Google's corporate restructure to make Alphabet Inc. its parent company, Google Fiber was moved to Alphabet's Access division.[180][181]
In April 2015, Google announced Project Fi, a mobile virtual network operator, that combines Wi-Fi and cellular networks from different telecommunication providers in an effort to enable seamless connectivity and fast Internet signal.
Facebook is an online social media and social networking service owned by American company Meta Platforms. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, its name comes from the face book directories often given to American university students. Membership was initially limited to Harvard students, gradually expanding to other North American universities and, since 2006, anyone over 13 years old. As of July 2022, Facebook claimed 2.93 billion monthly active users,[6] and ranked third worldwide among the most visited websites as of July 2022.[7] It was the most downloaded mobile app of the 2010s.[8]
Facebook can be accessed from devices with Internet connectivity, such as personal computers, tablets and smartphones. After registering, users can create a profile revealing information about themselves. They can post text, photos and multimedia which are shared with any other users who have agreed to be their "friend" or, with different privacy settings, publicly. Users can also communicate directly with each other with Facebook Messenger, join common-interest groups, and receive notifications on the activities of their Facebook friends and the pages they follow.
The subject of numerous controversies, Facebook has often been criticized over issues such as user privacy (as with the Cambridge Analytica data scandal), political manipulation (as with the 2016 U.S. elections) and mass surveillance.[9] Posts originating from the Facebook page of Breitbart News, a media organization previously affiliated with Cambridge Analytica,[10] are currently among the most widely shared political content on Facebook.[11][12][13][14][15] Facebook has also been subject to criticism over psychological effects such as addiction and low self-esteem, and various controversies over content such as fake news, conspiracy theories, copyright infringement, and hate speech.
Zuckerberg built a website called "Facemash" in 2003 while attending Harvard University. The site was comparable to Hot or Not and used "photos compiled from the online face books of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the "hotter" person". Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours. The site was sent to several campus group listservs, but was shut down a few days later by Harvard administration. Zuckerberg faced expulsion and was charged with breaching security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy. Ultimately, the charges were dropped. Zuckerberg expanded on this project that semester by creating a social study tool. He uploaded art images, each accompanied by a comments section, to a website he shared with his classmates.
A "face book" is a student directory featuring photos and personal information. In 2003, Harvard had only a paper version[ along with private online directories. Zuckerberg told The Harvard Crimson, "Everyone's been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard. ... I think it's kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week."[29] In January 2004, Zuckerberg coded a new website, known as "TheFacebook", inspired by a Crimson editorial about Facemash, stating, "It is clear that the technology needed to create a centralized Website is readily available ... the benefits are many." Zuckerberg met with Harvard student Eduardo Saverin, and each of them agreed to invest $1,000 ($1,435 in 2021 dollars[30]) in the site.[31] On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched "TheFacebook", originally located at thefacebook.com.
Six days after the site launched, Harvard seniors Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra accused Zuckerberg of intentionally misleading them into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com. They claimed that he was instead using their ideas to build a competing product. The three complained to the Crimson and the newspaper began an investigation. They later sued Zuckerberg, settling in 2008 for 1.2 million shares (worth $300 million ($354 million in 2021 dollars[30]) at Facebook's IPO).
Membership was initially restricted to students of Harvard College. Within a month, more than half the undergraduates had registered.[36] Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes joined Zuckerberg to help manage the growth of the website.[37] In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Columbia, Stanford and Yale.[38] It then became available to all Ivy League colleges, Boston University, NYU, MIT, and successively most universities in the United States and Canada.
In mid-2004, Napster co-founder and entrepreneur Sean Parker—an informal advisor to Zuckerberg—became company president.[41] In June 2004, the company moved to Palo Alto, California.[42] It received its first investment later that month from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. In 2005, the company dropped "the" from its name after purchasing the domain name Facebook.com for US$200,000 ($277,492 in 2021 dollars). The domain had belonged to AboutFace Corporation.
In May 2005, Accel Partners invested $12.7 million ($17.6 million in 2021 dollars) in Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1 million ($1.39 million in 2021 dollars) of his own money. A high-school version of the site launched in September 2005. Eligibility expanded to include employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and Microsoft.
Facebook was sued by the Federal Trade Commission as well as a coalition of several states for illegal monopolization and antitrust. The FTC and states sought the courts to force Facebook to sell its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram.[183][184] The suits were dismissed by a federal judge on June 28, 2021, who stated that there was not enough evidence brought in the suit to determine Facebook to be a monopoly at this point, though allowed the FTC to amend its case to include additional evidence. In its amended filings in August 2021, the FTC asserted that Facebook had been a monopoly in the area of personal social networks since 2011, distinguishing Facebook's activities from social media services like TikTok that broadcast content without necessarily l

Number of diabetics in Cuba could double by 2010 • In the Habana municipality of Jaruco an active investigation within the population is underway, looking to the prevention and treatment of diabetes, an effort that is later to be extended to the rest of the country
CURRENTLY there are 375,095 registered cases of diabetes in Cuba, a figure that could reach 624,000 by 2010, affirmed Dr. Oscar Díaz, director of the National Institute of Endocrinology, a special center devoted to treatment of this condition that causes the death of three million people a year worldwide.
Diabetes is a disease that is on the rise. According to facts broadcast on the Cuban “Roundtable” TV program addressing the issue, 246 million people in the world are currently living with the affliction, a figure that is expected to reach 380 million by 2025.
The disease can lead to a diabetic coma, that can be fatal, and other chronic complications which can manifest themselves in the long term as heart trouble or cardiac arrest, thrombosis or brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, vision loss and others like sores on the feet that, left untreated, can lead to amputation.
In Cuba, where more than 3% of the population has diabetes, it is the eighth most frequent cause of death. As Dr. Díaz explained to the weekly Trabajadores, of the total diagnosed, only around 1,000 are children.
Cuba has Diabetic Treatment Centers in all provinces except Sancti Spíritus and the special municipality of the Isle of Youth, where patients are taught to understand and control their disease in order to live independent and useful lives.
Adults as well as children learn exercises that they should do, the type of nutrition that is best for them, the use of specific medications, checking glucose in the blood and urine to prevent complications which, if they should arise, can be given specialized treatment within the national health system.
For example, angiology services are provided which serve to prevent amputations required as a result of diabetic foot ulcers. Also to be highlighted is the unique product developed by Cuban biotechnologists, Citoprop-p, which has been used successfully to cure these lesions.
Currently, public health officials are actively working on research and inquiries into diabetes within the community.
As was reported on the “Roundtable,” the Habana municipality of Jaruco, an agricultural community of 25,574 residents, was selected as the locale for this pilot program that will later be implemented across the country.
Dr. Vladimir González, Jaruco’s municipal public health director, explained that the study involves more than 20,000 individuals over the age of 15 and includes questionnaires and analyses carried out in the family doctor offices.
This effort will allow for even more information on the incidence of diabetes within the Cuban population and at the same time support its control through prevention (the most important according to expert opinion), early detection, education of the afflicted and their families and the implementation of measures to prevent complications.
It is recognized that in order to prevent diabetes, it is necessary to understand the risk factors and to administer glucose tolerance tests.
Some of these risk factors (age and genetics) cannot be changed, but others related to patterns of behavior (obesity and sedentary life style) can be addressed.

Cuba, Castro, Che Guevara was jailer and executioner-in-chief of Castro's dictatorship
Cuba: A Photograph as Metaphor
By Online Saturday, January 24, 2009
Fausta Wertz, faustasblog.com
Cuba celebrated fifty years of its Communist Revolution the other day. It was a subdued celebration, as befits a celebration where the locals were not invited, and where the anniversary is marked by grief.
I was doing a roundup of posts for my blog’s Monday Carnival of Latin America and the Caribbean when I came across this image:
The rusted wrought-iron balconies and fading handcrafted doors look back to an older era of artisanship and pride of ownership, now gone. Paint colors from decades ago, stucco coming apart from the wall, graffiti and mold, signal decay and pain.
Hope has bypassed that wall.
The photograph is in an article about Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie, Che, but it is emblematic of today’s Cuba: the only recent paint that building has seen is the iconic figure of Che (most prominently the Korda photo), whose myth and fiction override the reality of the hundreds of people he killed:
But a glance beneath the surface glamour of Alberto Korda’s 1960 beret-and-curls photograph of Guevara is enough to expose the less-than-romantic reality. At the time he posed for Korda’s camera, Guevara was jailer and executioner-in-chief of Castro’s dictatorship. As boss of the notorious La Cabaña prison in Havana, he supervised the detention, interrogation, summary trials and executions of hundreds of “class enemies”.
We know from Ernest Hemingway – then a Cuban resident – what Che was up to. Hemingway, who had looked kindly on leftist revolutions since the Spanish civil war, invited his friend George Plimpton, editor of the Paris Review, to witness the shooting of prisoners condemned by the tribunals under Guevara’s control. They watched as the men were trucked in, unloaded, shot, and taken away. As a result, Plimpton later refused to publish Guevara’s memoir, The Motorcycle Diaries.
There have been some 16,000 such executions since the Castro brothers, Guevara and their merry men swept into Havana in January 1959. About 100,000 Cubans who have fallen foul of the regime have been jailed. Two million others have succeeded in escaping Castro’s socialist paradise, while an estimated 30,000 have died in the attempt.
The building it’s painted on, like hundreds of other buildings in Cuba, won’t be restored, or for that matter, brought back to minimum standards because it’s not a tourist destination or owned by a Communist Party big-shot. Since in Cuba only the state has the right to sell property, and the average wage is $20 a month, the only way that building got new paint was a picture of Che. Like the Revolución, even that image is showing cracks.
The woman in front of the building looks at the contents of a small shopping bag, where she may be carrying the meager rations that Fidel Castro introduced in the country in 1962, rations that compare to that which Cuban slaves received in the 1840s.
A month’s rations would fit in that bag.
Of course there’s a propaganda aspect, and the Cuban government places the blame for nearly everything on the USA and the embargo, el bloqueo, even when the US is Cuba’s #5 trading partner according to the Cuban government’s own figures:
Trade data for 2007 posted on the website of Cuba’s National Statistics Office placed the U.S. fifth at $582 million, compared with $484 million in 2006, including shipping costs.
By the way, food and medicine were never subject to the embargo.

Infra-thin: The infinite space between four and fore.
Summarising summarily, this would-be artist senses that we might be at a point of change. This is a point where we join ‘the mean’ of the creative universe in making a slow transition from procreativity to bifurcation. Whilst he is aware that this hypothesis might be generated by the guilt of being a non-procreative unit, he is willing to follow this idea to a conclusion, whilst also recognising an inherent madness there, that constant and bewildering pitfall.
As our reproductive capacity diminishes, as evinced by our sperm count and fertility levels decreasing, coupled with the recent release of the gene pool map and our capacity to clone in the laboratory, a pattern would seem to be developing. Perhaps we are naturally getting in line with the rest of everything (I have trouble with words such as ‘creation’ as this presupposes a creator).
We fall into line by splitting, by extending our pseudopodia into an unknown universe, to feel our way out so that we can divide with a vestige of security. The recognition is that to divide in this way is to generate two momentarily weak halves until some growth occurs. This growth is inevitable but sore. So, each part moves forward cautiously, not trusting but feeling its way forward, seeking more than trusting. Ideally, self-knowledge accumulates, like moss or lichen, and all sorts of images and words are generated that describe this experience.
Effluvia, detritus, art, literature, philosophy, call it what you will.
These two separate bodies are aware of each other. They care for each other because the smaller is generated by the larger and the larger feels a responsibility to help the smaller survive, and the smaller wants to make the larger proud.
Parenting is like making Art. Both are natural and unavoidable for some, a compulsion even, and when you create, or split, you love ‘your’ offspring and want to see it prosper. You work within your own limitations and eventually send ‘them’ into the world to fend for themselves.
How do we describe this?
A Digression: Yahoo.
“By what I could discover, the Yahoos appear to be the most unteachable of all animals, their capacities never reaching higher than to draw or carry burthens. Yet I am of opinion, this defect ariseth chiefly from a perverse, restive disposition. For they are cunning, malicious, treacherous and revengeful. They are strong and hardy, but of a cowardly spirit, and by consequence insolent, abject, and cruel. It is observed that the red-haired of both sexes are more libidinous and mischievous than the rest, whom yet they much exceed in strength and activity.”
Jonathan Swift, 1726
On the Internet there are 12,797 web pages (1999) on bifurcation on just one server, Yahoo.com. Cyber space, the new frontier is the product of bifurcation, the language used being binary, and completely generated by the numbers zero and one. At the moment, there is some research into the possibility of extending that language by passing binary information through the common leech. What might the universe generated between a computer programme and a leech be called?
Infra-thin perhaps.
I confess to having been red-haired, and am now embracing the liberation of limpid grey.
Running with scissors, indeed! Try careering with a chainsaw.
St. Hilda’s By The Sea is a small Anglican church in Sechelt. Set among the verdant green trees of the temperate rainforest, it is an eclectic mix of old and new: retired British pensioners polish the altar crystal and set out flowers for Sunday services, presided over by a gay Chinese-Canadian priest. Tai chi mixes with Celtic mysticism in a melange that is somehow stronger than its parts. And isn’t that what community is all about?
From the official website:
Walking the labyrinth is an ancient spiritual act that is being rediscovered during our time.
Usually constructed from circular patterns, labyrinths are based on principles of sacred geometry. Sometimes called “divine imprints”, they are found around the world as sacred patterns that have been passed down through the ages for at least 4,000 years. When a pattern of a certain size is constructed or placed on the ground, it can be used for walking meditations and rituals.
Labyrinths and their geometric cousins (spirals and mandalas) can be found in almost every religious tradition. For example, the Kabbala, or Tree of Life, is found in the Jewish mystical tradition. The Hopi Medicine Wheel, and the Man in the Maze are two forms from the Native American labyrinth traditions. The Cretan labyrinth, the remains of which can be found on the island of Crete, has seven path rings and is the oldest known labyrinth (4,000 or 5.000 years old).
In Europe, the Celts and later the early Christian Celtic Church revered labyrinths and frequently built them in natural settings. Sacred dances would be performed in them to celebrate solar and religious festivals. During the Middle Ages, labyrinths were created in churches and cathedrals throughout France and Northern Italy. These characteristically flat church or pavement labyrinths were inlaid into the floor of the nave of the church.
The Chartres Labyrinth
The labyrinth constructed at St. Hilda’s is an 11-circuit labyrinth. It is a replica of the one embedded in the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. The design of this labyrinth, and many of the other church labyrinths in Europe, is a reworking of the ancient labyrinth design in which an equal-armed cross is emphasized and surrounded by a web of concentric circles. As with many Christian symbols, this was an adaptation of a symbol; that is known to have predated the Christian faith. This medieval variation is considered a breakthrough in design because it is less linear than the preceding, more formal, Roman design that developed from quadrant to quadrant. The medieval design made one path as long as possible, starting at the outer circumference and leading to the centre. Fraught with twists and turns, the path’s meanderings were considered symbolic representations of the Christian pilgrim’s journey to the Holy City of Jerusalem and of one’s own journey through life. This classical design is sometimes referred to as “the Chartres Labyrinth” due to the location of its best known example. The labyrinth was built at Chartres in the early 13th century (~ 1215 A.D.). No one knows the source of this classical 11-circuit labyrinth design, and much of its spiritual meaning and use has been lost.
The Chartres Labyrinth is located in the west end of the nave, the central body of the cathedral. When you walk in the main doors and look towards the high altar, you see the center of the labyrinth on the floor about 50 feet in front of you. It is approximately 42 feet in diameter and the path is 16 inches wide. At Chartres, the center of the Rose Window mirrors the center of the labyrinth. The cathedral is perfectly proportioned, so that if we put the west wall of the cathedral on hinges and folded it down on the labyrinth, the Rose Window would fit almost perfectly over the labyrinth.
Labyrinth or Maze?
The difference between a labyrinth used for meditation and mazes can be confusing. Mazes often have many entrances, dead-ends and cul-de-sacs that frequently confound the human mind. In contrast, meditation labyrinths offer only one path. By following the one path to the center, the seeker can use the labyrinth to quiet his or her mind and find peace and illumination at the center of his or her being. “As soon as one enters the labyrinth, one realizes that the path of the labyrinth serves as a metaphor for one’s spiritual journey. The walk, and all that happens on it, can be grasped through the intuitive, pattern-discerning faculty of the person walking it. The genius of this tool is that it reflects back to the seeker whatever he or she needs to discover from the perspective of a new level of conscious awareness.”
The Labyrinth is a Universal Meditation Tool
Anyone from any tradition or spiritual path can walk into the labyrinth and, through reflecting in the present moment, can benefit from it. A meditation labyrinth is one of many tools that can be used for spiritual practice. Like any tool, it is best used with a proper, good, intention. A church or temple can be used simply as a refuge from a rainstorm, but it can be so much more with a different intention. The same is true of the labyrinth. The seeker is only asked to put one foot in front of the other. By stepping into the labyrinth, we are choosing once again to walk the contemplative spiritual path. We are agreeing to let ourselves be open to see, to be free to hear, and to becoming real enough to respond. The labyrinth is a prayer path, a crucible of change, a meditation tool, a blueprint where psyche meets soul.
The best way to learn about the labyrinth is to walk a well-constructed one a few times, with an open heart and an open mind. Then allow your experience to guide you as to whether this will be a useful spiritual tool for you.
The Chartres Labyrinth and the Pilgrim’s Journey
Pilgrims are persons in motion – passing through territories not their own – seeking something we might call completion, or perhaps the word clarity will do as well, a goal to which only the spirit’s compass points the way.
Richard R. Niebuhr in Pilgrims and Pioneers
“The tradition of pilgrimage is as old as religion itself. Worshippers on pilgrimage traveled to holy festivals whether to solstice celebrations, to Mecca to gather around the Ka’aba for the high holy days of Islam, or to Easter festivals in the Holy City of Jerusalem. Pilgrimages were a mixture of religious duty and holiday relaxation for the peasant, the commoner and rich land owner alike. The journey was often embarked on in groups with designated places to stay at night. The pilgrims were restless to explore the mystical holy places, and many were in search of physical or spiritual healing.
The Christian story, which emphasized the humanity of Christ, fascinated the pilgrims. In the Middle Ages, most people did not read. As a result, they were much more oriented to the senses than we are today. They learned the story by traveling to Jerusalem to walk where Jesus walked, to pray where he prayed, and to experience, in a solemn moment, where he died. Unlike today, Pilgrims encountered the truth of the Christian mystery through an ongoing intimacy with all their senses.
When a person committed his or her life to Christ in the early Middle Ages, they sometimes made a vow to make a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem. However, by the 12th century when the Crusades swept across Europe and the ownership of Jerusalem was in tumultuous flux, travel became dangerous and expensive. In response to this situation, the Roman Church appointed seven pilgrimage cathedrals to become “Jerusalem” for pilgrims. Consequently, in the pilgrimage tradition, the path within the labyrinth was called the Chemin de Jerusalem and the center of the labyrinth was called “New Jerusalem”.
The walk into the labyrinth marked the end of the physical journey across the countryside and served as a symbolic entry-way into the spiritual realms of the Celestial City. The image of the Celestial City – taken straight out of the Book of Revelation to John – captivated the religious imagination of many during the Middle Ages. The wondrous Gothic cathedrals, with painted walls either in bright, even gaudy colours, or else white-washed, were designed to represent the Celestial City. The stained glass windows – when illuminated by the sun – created the sense of colourful, dancing jewels, allowing the pilgrim to experience the awesome mystery of the City of God.”
The Journey of Life
A fundamental approach to the labyrinth is to see it as a metaphor for life’s journey. The labyrinth reminds us that all of life, with its joys, sorrows, twists and turns, is a journey that comes from God (birth) and goes to God (death). It is a physical metaphor for the journey of healing, spiritual and emotional growth and transformation. Following the path is like any journey. Sometimes you feel you are at or nearing your destination, and at other times you may feel distant or even lost. Only by faithfully keeping to the path will you arrive at the physical center of the labyrinth, which signifies God, the center of our lives and souls.
Applying the Three Fold Mystical Tradition to the Labyrinth
In the Christian mystical tradition, the journey to God was articulated in the three stages. These stages have become recognized as being universal to meditation: to release and quiet; to open and receive; and to take what was gained back out into the world.
The Three Stages
The first part of the Three- Fold Mystical Path is Purgation. This archaic word is from the root word “to purge”, meaning to cleanse, to let go. Shedding is another way of describing the experience. The mystical word is empting or releasing. It is believed that monks journeyed the first part of the labyrinth Purgation on their knees as a penitential act. This was not done for reasons of punishment as we might think, but as a way to humble oneself before God.
The second stage of the Three-Fold Path, Illumination, is found in the center of the labyrinth. Usually it is a surprise to reach the center because the long winding path seems “illogical” and cannot be figured out by the linear mind. After quieting the mind in the first part of the walk, the center presents a new experience: a place of meditation and prayer. Often people at this stage in the walk find insight into their situation in life, or clarity about a certain problem, hence the label “illumination”. As one enters the
center, the instruction is simple: enter with an open heart and mind; receive what there is for you.
The third stage, Union, begins when you leave the center of the labyrinth and continues as you retrace the path that brought you in. In this stage the meditation takes on a grounded, energized feeling. Many people who have had an important experience in the center feel that this third stage of the labyrinth gives them a way of integrating the insights they received. Others feel that this stage stokes the creative fires within. It energizes insight. It empowers, invites, and even pushes us to be more authentic and confident and to take risks with our gifts in the world. Union means communing with God.
The Monastic Orders experienced a union with God through their community life by creating a fulfilling balance between the work that was assigned, sleep and the many hours of worship attended daily. Our times present a similar challenge: we struggle to find balance between work, sleep, family and friends, leisure and spiritual life. The lack of structured communities in which people share work responsibilities and the “every person for himself or herself” mentality (or every family for itself) prevalent in our highly individualistic society makes the task of finding balance even more difficult.
Monastic communities offered a mystical spirituality that spoke to highly intuitive and intensely introverted people and (paradoxically to some) at the same time provided an economic structure throughout Europe. Monasteries during the Middle Ages provided schools and hospitals managed by monks; yet, at the same time, cloistered life helped the monks stay inwardly directed. Today, without any reliable structure directing us, the way of union needs to be re-thought. Our times call for most of us to be outer-directed. We are called to action in every aspect of our society in order to meet the spiritual challenges that confront us in the 21st century. Gratefully, there are still people in religious orders holding the candle for deep contemplation, but the majority of people involved in the spiritual transformation are searching for a path that guides them to service in the world in an active, extroverted, compassionate way. The third stage of the labyrinth empowers the seeker to move back into the world replenished and directed – which makes the labyrinth a particularly powerful tool for transformation.
Walking the Labyrinth: The Process
The purpose of all spiritual disciplines – prayer, fasting, meditation – is to help create an open attentiveness that enables us to receive and renew our awareness of our grounding and wholeness in God.
The Experience of Walking Meditation
Many of us have trouble quieting our minds. The Buddhists call the distracted state of mind the “monkey mind”, which is an apt image of what the mind is frequently like: thoughts swinging like monkeys from branch to branch, chattering away without any rhyme or conscious reason. When the mind is quiet, we feel peaceful and open, aware of a silence that embraces the universe.
Complete quiet in the mind is not a realistic goal for most of us. Instead, the task is to dis-identify with the thoughts going through our minds. Don’t get hooked by the thoughts, let them go. Thomas Keating, a Cistercian monk who teaches Centering Prayer (meditation) in the Christian tradition, described the mind as a still lake. A thought is like a fish that swims through it. If you get involved with the fish (“Gee what an unusual fish, I wonder what it is called?”), then you are hooked. Many of us have discovered through learning meditation how difficult it is to quiet the mind; yet, the rewards are great.
In the labyrinth, the sheer act of walking a complicated, attention demanding path begins to focus the mind. Thoughts of daily tasks and experiences become less intrusive. A quiet mind does not happen automatically. You must gently guide the mind with the intention of letting go of extraneous thoughts. This is much easier to do when your whole body is moving – when you are walking. Movement takes away the excess charge of psychic energy that disturbs our efforts to quiet our thought processes.
Two Basic Approaches to the Walk
One way to walk the labyrinth is to choose to let all thought go and simply open yourself to your experience with gracious attention. Usually – though not always – quieting happens in the first stage of the walk. After the mind is quiet, you can choose to remain in the quiet. Or use the labyrinth as a prayer path. Simply begin to talk to God. This is an indication that you are ready to receive what is there for you, or you allow a sincere part of your being to find its voice.
A second approach to a labyrinth walk is to consider a question. Concentrate on the question as you walk in. Amplify your thoughts about it; let all else go but your question. When you walk into the center with an open heart and an open mind, you are opening yourself to receiving new information, new insights about yourself.
Guidelines for the Walk
Find your pace. In our chaotic world we are often pushed beyond a comfortable rhythm. In this state we lose the sense of our own needs. To make matters worse, we are often rushed and then forced to wait. Anyone who has hurried to the bank only to stand in line knows the feeling. Ironically, the same thing can happen with the labyrinth, but there is a difference. The labyrinth helps us find what our natural pace would be and draws our attention to it when we are not honouring it.
Along with finding your pace, support your movement through the labyrinth by becoming conscious of your breath. Let your breath flow smoothly in and out of your body. It can be coordinated with each step – as is done in the Buddhist walking meditation – if you choose. Let your experience be your guide.
Each experience in the labyrinth is different, even if you walk it often in a short period of time. The pace usually differs each time as well. It can change dramatically within the different stages of the walk. When the labyrinth has more than a comfortable number of seekers on it, you can “pass” people if you want to continue to honour the intuitive pace your inner process has set. If you are moving at a slower pace, you can allow people to pass you. At first people are uncomfortable with the idea of “passing” someone on the labyrinth. It looks competitive, especially since the walk is a spiritual exercise. Again, these kinds of thoughts and feelings, we hope, are greeted from a spacious place inside that smiles knowingly about the machinations of the human ego. On the spiritual path we meet every and all things. To find our pace, to allow spaciousness within, to be receptive to all experience, and to be aware of the habitual thoughts and issues that hamper our spiritual development is a road to self-knowledge.
Summary of How to Walk the Labyrinth
Pause at the entry way to allow yourself to be fully conscious of the act of stepping into the labyrinth. Allow about a minute, or several turns on the path, to create some space between yourself and the person in front of you. Some ritual act, such as a bow, may feel appropriate during the labyrinth walk. Do what comes naturally.
Follow your pace. Allow your body to determine the pace. If you allow a rapid pace and the person in front of you is moving slower, feel free to move around this person. This is easiest to do at the turns by turning earlier. If you are moving slowly, you can step onto the labyrs (wide spaces at the turns) to allow others to pass.
The narrow path is a two-way street. If you are going in and another person is going out, you will meet on the path. If you want to keep in an inward meditative state, simply do not make eye contact. If you meet someone you know, a touch of the hand or a hug may be an important acknowledgement of being on the path together.
Symbolism and Meanings Found in the Chartres Labyrinth
Circles and Spirals
The circle is the symbol of unity or union and it is the primary shape of all labyrinths. The circle in sacred geometry represents the incessant movement of the universe (uncomprehensible) as opposed to the square which represents comprehensible order. The labyrinth is a close cousin to the spiral and it, too, reflects the cyclical element of nature and is regarded as the symbol of eternal life.
The labyrinth functions like a spiral, creating a vortex in its center. Upon entering, the path winds in a clockwise pattern. Energy is being drawn out. Upon leaving the center the walker goes in a counter clockwise direction. The unwinding path integrates and empowers us on our walk back out. We are literally ushered back out into the world in a strengthened condition.
The Path
The path lies in 11 concentric circles with the 12th being the labyrinth center. The path meanders throughout the whole circle. There are 34 turns on the path going into the center. Six are semi-right turns and 28 are 180° turns. So the 12 rings that form the 11 pathways may symbolically represent, the 12 apostles, 12 tribes of Israel or 12 months of the year. Twelve is a mystical number in Christianity. In sacred geometry three represents heaven and four represents earth. Twelve is the product of 3 x 4 and, therefore, the path which flows through the whole is then representative of all creation.
The obvious metaphor for the path is the difficult path to salvation, with its many twists and turns. Since we cannot see a straight path to our destination, the labyrinth can be viewed as a metaphor for our lives. We learn to surrender to the path (Christ) and trust that he will lead us on our journey.
The path can also be viewed as grace or the Church guiding us through chaos.
The Cruciform and Labyrs
The labyrinth is divided equally into four quadrants that make an equal-armed cross or cruciform. The four arms represent in symbol what is thought to be the essential
structure of the universe for example, the four spatial directions, the four elements (earth, wind, water and fire), the four seasons and, most important, salvation through the cross. The four arms of the cross emerging from the center seem to give order to the would-be chaos of the meandering path around it.
The Chartres labyrinth cross or cruciform is delineated by the 10 labyrs (labyr means to turn and this is the root of the word labyrinth). The labyrs are double-ax shaped and visible at the turns and between turns. They are traditionally seen as a symbol of women’s power and creativity.
The Centre Rosette
In the Middle Ages, the rose was regarded as a symbol for the Virgin Mary. Because of its association with the myths of Percival and the Holy Grail at that time, it also was seen as a sign of beauty and love. The rose becomes symbolic of both human and divine love, of passionate love, but also love beyond passion. The single rose became a symbol of a simple acceptance of God’s love for the world.
Unlike a normal rose (which has five petals) the rosette has six petals and is steeped in mysticism. Although associated with the Rose of Sharon, which refers to Mary, it may also represent the Holy Spirit (wisdom and enlightenment). The six petals may have corresponded to the story of the six days of creation. In other mystical traditions, the petals can be viewed as the levels of evolution (mineral, plant, animal, humankind, angelic and divine).
The Lunations
The lunations are the outer ring of partial circles that complete the outside circle of the labyrinth. They are unique to the Chartres design.
Celtic Symbols on the St. Hilda’s Labyrinth
The Celtic peoples have given us seven enduring spiritual principles:
1. A deep respect of nature, regarding creation as the fifth Gospel.
2. Quiet care for all living things.
3. The love of learning.
4. A wonder-lust or migratory nature.
5. Love of silence and solitude.
6. Understanding of time as a sacred reality and an appreciation of ordinary life, worshipping God through everyday life, and with great joy.
7. The value of family and clan affiliation, and especially spiritual ties of soul friends.
To show our respect for such wisdom, two Celtic designs adorn the St. Hilda’s labyrinth.
To mark the entrance to the labyrinth is a Celtic zoomorphic design painted in red. Traditionally, Celtic monks used intricate knotwork and zoomorphic designs (odd animals intertwined in uncomfortable ways) as mere filler for their illuminated gospel texts. They had no discernible meaning.
However, because of their unique design components, zoomorphs are now associated with transformations.
Transformation, change, action, and passion are also associated with red, the colour of fire. Therefore, this entrance symbol may well be an appropriate sign for the journey ahead.
At the labyrinth’s centre is a Celtic triquetra. This interlocked knotwork design of three stylized fish (whales) is often interpreted as the Trinity knot. It is a perfect representation of the concept of "three in one" in Christian trinity beliefs. Having the design enclosed within the centre circle further emphasizes the unity theme.
The triquetra can also be considered to represent the triplicities of mind, body, and soul, as well as the three domains of earth- earth, sea, and sky.
Final Reflection: The Labyrinth as a “Thinning Place”
In Celtic Christianity, places where people felt most strongly connected with God’s presence were referred to as thin places. It was these places in nature (forest groves, hilltops and deep wells) that the seen and unseen worlds were most closely connected, and the inhabitants of both worlds could momentarily touch the other. Today our churches, temples and sacred sites are the new thin places to meet the Divine. Here, at St Hilda’s, we have opportunities to encounter many thinning places – whether it be during Eucharistic or Taize services, while singing or praying, or through the love of a welcoming inclusive community. The labyrinth is a welcome addition; and with the right intent can also become a new thinning place for the modern pilgrim/spiritual seeker. This outward journey is an archetype with which we can have a direct experience. We can walk it. It can serve to frame the inward journey – a journey of repentance, forgiveness and rebirth, a journey that seeks a deeper faith, and greater holiness, a journey in search of God.

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

About when I started Fotolog. Architect 's point of view.
4
Why did not you have a camera so far?
5
What is the coolest thing? The photo is as it is.
6
About the current YouTube bar. I also want to tell # I want to leave.
7
About Japanese photographers. Japanese YouTube bar is Pistols.
8
The composition of the photograph is sensibility. Meet the designers in Milan. Two questions.
9
What is a good composition? What is a bad composition?
10
What is the time to point the camera? It is slow if you are looking into the viewfinder or display.
11
Family photos. I can not take pictures with others. The inside of the subject.
12
About YouTube 's photographer. Camera technology etc. Sensibility is polished by reading books.
13
About the Japanese newspaper. A picture of a good newspaper is Reuters. If you continue to look at useless photographs # it will be useless.
14
About Japanese photographers. About the exhibition.
Summary. I wrote a novel etc. What I want to tell the most.

1 Photo exhibition up to that point. Did you want to go?
2 Well # what is an exhibition that you want to visit even if you go there?
3 Challenge to exhibit one work every month before opening a solo exhibition at the Harajuku Design Festa.
4 works are materials and silhouettes. Similar to fashion.
5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.
6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview # it is the same as writing a novel.
7 I want to show it to someone # but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.
8 What is copycat? Nowadays # it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

I went to Milan in 2005.
At that time # I went from Milan to Venice.
We took Eurostar into the transportation.
This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.
When I changed the track # I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.

Summary: A lower -than-average kit. It could have been a stellar of a kit if it weren't for some flaws, particularly the dreaded intake joint gaps. it had its high marks (white metal landing gear, thin decals, fine surface details). It might be a down-grade alternative to the AMK kit though.
A Port Jackson shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) smiles for the photographer. Shelly Beach, Manly, NSW
Manuscript title: Manuscript summary: At the beginning of the 17th century, a book of black magic was published, attributed to the mythical Faust and known by the title Höllenzwang. The library in Weimar owned a manuscript of this text, which Goethe was aware of. In 1949 Martin Bodmer was able to purchase a similar manuscript. This document, which is difficult to date, is written in cabalistic signs and, according to a German gloss, contains a series of magic spells for exorcists, which can be used in particular to call up the seven evil spirits.
Origin: Cologny? (Switzerland)
Period: middle of 18th century
Image source: Cologny, Fondation Martin Bodmer, Cod. Bodmer 66: Doktor Fausts Dreifacher Höllenzwang (e-codices.unifr.ch/en/list/one/fmb/cb-0066).

Notice regarding "Lot No.402_”.
From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

About my book.
I published a book a long time ago.
At that time # I uploaded my interview as a PDF on the internet.
Its Japanese and English.

How to write a novel.
How to take a picture.
A sense of distance to the work.
All of these have something in common.
I wrote down what I felt and left it.
I hope my text will be read by many people.

Kaori's dream of coming to Tokyo is to become friends with a famous artist.
For that purpose, the radio station's producer, Ryo Osawa, was needed.
Osawa speaks to Kaori during a live radio broadcast.

Rika Sanjo, who is Kei's classmate and has feelings for him, has been looking into her girlfriend Kaori's movements. . . . .

Summary of 2013
or
Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest: The Ongoing Saga of ****** Street
by Andrew Karagianis, December 31st, 2013/January 1st, 2014
I have been thinking about how to write up my “It’s become an annual thing” summary of the year. I have lots to write about, but there was no real cohesive theme in 2013 with which everything else revolved around – in 2012, my entire year was devoted to going back to school for Addictions. 2013 was a more regular year spent moving forward, slowly but surely, as an adult. Not a year of many milestones, but a year of enjoying life with my girlfriend, working in my field, and working my way toward a normal, conformist, middle-class adult life. In other words, everything 17-year-old Andrew worked to avoid ;)
I rang in the new year (2013) on King Street near Roy Thomson Hall with Ally. We then took the streetcar home, while I exchanged “Happy New Year!” texts with other friends. It was uneventful, but I was happy to spend the night with Ally, because the next day, I was off to work! Fascinating, right? I got my first job in my field in the middle of December 2012, and worked there every weekend in January. Let's call it "Center 1". I didn’t really do much else in January. Work, hang out with Ally at her apartment, and go back to Dad’s house. But work in January was fun. It was a good group of clients to introduce me to another side of addiction treatment – the government-funded, waitlist kind.
February is where 2013 started to get interesting. I had applied to work at another treatment center in January, and in early February, I had an interview. The interview went well, although the interviewer took a call to hear that a client had stolen a counsellor’s car at the treatment center, which I should have taken as my cue to say “Thanks but no thanks”. Anyway, that same week, I had been hired at the center where I did my placement in the fall of 2012. Let's call it "Center 2". I worked a few shifts at the other treatment center (Center 3), where the staff were decent, but I soon noticed problems. Clients were smoking indoors and in the van. A counsellor filled up the van with gas while the engine was running. I drove up there during the February snowstorm and ruptured my gas tank on a snowbank in their driveway when their plow operator asked me to move my car. And when they handed me the new-employee paperwork after my third shift, it included a non-competition clause. I spoke with the bigwig who interviewed me about having been hired by a competitor at the same time, and he told me that I had to choose one or the other. So I went to my mom’s to think about it, did the math, and quit Center 2. I called Center 3 to inform them. That evening, I found out that they weren’t going to give me as many hours as I had been led to believe, and so I made my dissatisfaction known. The next day, they called to say they had “withdrawn the offer.” So there I was, fired from one after quitting the other, feeling guilty and enraged. Thankfully, I got my job back at Center 2, and I’ve been working there ever since. Center 3 did not pay me for hours worked, and they have a reputation for dishonesty and being unprofessional. They will get their comeuppance, and I will be happy to watch them crumble.
For the rest of February and March, I worked a fair bit at Center 2, and learned to present the family program lectures. I didn’t work at Center 1 for a stretch of six weeks, and this “work a lot at one job; don’t work much at the other” went back and forth for several months.
Since I had met Ally in July of 2012, her rented townhouse on ****** Street had been a revolving door of tenants. In early 2013, it was her; a hipster in her mid-30s; an unemployed Asian guy in his early 30s; and a starving musician in his mid-30s. In March, Ally and I talked about finding a place to live together. Shortly afterward, her female roommate announced that she was leaving. Hallelujah! Ally’s female roommate had made our lives difficult for as long as we’d been there, what with her snarky comments, unkempt appearance, coconut oil shampoo, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Syrup, salad for every meal, claw-happy cat, pants-eating rabbit, music that sounded like jackhammers attacking a nest of raccoons, and the dark cloud and cold wind that always followed her into a room. We decided that I would take her place in the nice bedroom at the front of the house. I’d get to live downtown, with my girlfriend; neither of which I’d done before. I’d get that reserved parking spot, with quick access to the highways I needed to drive on to get to both of my jobs. Walking distance to all sorts of cool places. And we’d be done with shitty roommates.
Or so we thought.
But like an ad on YouTube (which I can’t fucking STAND), you’re going to have to read through the unrelated stuff in order to get to the meat of that story ;)
In April, I went to Niagara Falls with Ally for her birthday – we saw a Buddhist temple, a butterfly garden, a really cool aviary where I made use of my bird communication skills and called over a parrot, and had dinner at TGIFridays, where I typed up a get-healthy plan on my phone…and quickly forgot about it thereafter. April was also the leanest month of the year for me in terms of work – no extra shifts beyond the bare minimum. It wasn’t so bad though, because I spent the month packing for my move downtown. Packing takes a long time when you [probably] have the hoarder gene.
On May 2nd, Ally and I picked up a U-Haul in Midland, loaded it up, and moved my stuff downtown, with a stop at her parents’ house to pick up our new grown-up (i.e., double) bed. A twin bed is cozy for two, but knowing that you’re only an inch from falling out every night…coupled with the old bed falling apart about once a month…meant it was time for a change.
Anyway, after cleaning the alfalfa and rabbit turds off the floor in my new room downtown, it was nice to finally start living with Ally full time. Soon thereafter, a coworker at one job had to go on medical leave, so I got trained for admission work and picked up quite a few extra shifts, which continued until the end of June, when the boss discovered that I don’t have a Social Work degree…so she hired someone else for the position. She told me that I would have to go back to school to get what appears to be a less-relevant diploma than the certificate I just earned in addictions, so that seriously demotivated me for a good few weeks. That’s putting it nicely. Thankfully, my shifts started picking up again at Center 2, and until mid-November, it stayed that way. Anyway, I’m glad I learned how to do admission work, and at Center 2, too, they started handing me a lot of the assessments, which I was happy to do. As of this writing, I’ve done about 35 assessments between the two jobs.
Also in May, Terrance pulled out a feather and started bleeding, while he was still at Dad’s house. In August, he did it again, while living downtown with me, and again in mid-December (thankfully I was in the room when he squawked the latter two times, so I could put styptic powder on the wound immediately). A bird with a lampshade is a pissed-off bird.
June = lots of working. Hot afternoons stuck on 401. Shorts good. Money good. Can’t complain. I like summer. Who cares if it’s 35 degrees out! Also, new Sabbath CD. Awesome.
July began with Ally going on a ten-day meditation course. Although I had gone without seeing Ally for 9 days in December 2012 when she went to her sister’s destination wedding, this time, she was not permitted to use her phone. No contact for almost ten days. Thankfully, I worked a week of night shifts while she was gone, so the schedule adjustment provided enough of a distraction. I lived most of my life alone in the ‘relationship’ sense anyway, so I’m not afraid of being alone. But it was a daunting prospect, I must admit. We made it through, though ☺
On July 20th, I had a party at my new place. It was a good time overall, until V-Ron innocently (supposedly; you never know with V-Ron) called out to a black guy on the street – “What’s up, bro?” He immediately came up the steps and started giving everyone shit for saying “West side, bro”. I thought he must have been high if he was willing to fight like 7 guys at once…anyway, Ally threatened him off, and I’m sure he has no recollection of it. It made for a funny story for the rest of the night.
Also in July, I decided to have a look at that show I saw spoofed in Family Guy – Cosmos. I’m glad I did. Ally and I watched the whole series this summer. I wish I could find the words to describe how I felt while watching the first episode, but I can’t. It was so refreshing, even though the show was 33 years old, to see someone so wise talking about the universe and humanity with such a wide, long-term perspective. Part of what I liked about it is that Carl Sagan’s views on humanity were very similar to my own, so I felt like “Hey, finally, here’s a show that I can relate to!” I also liked how he ripped into pseudoscientific enterprises like astrology while retaining his composure. Although he’s been dead since 1996, Carl Sagan definitely became my idol in the second half of 2013. I’m reading one of his books now. Ally and I even made a Cosmos-themed Christmas tree this year (see photo!); painting ornaments to look like planets, with a Styrofoam sun on the top, and with Carl Sagan’s face in plasticene stuck to the front – which, by the way, was all Ally’s idea.
In early August, I did something I’ve been wanting to do for several years – had friends up to the cottage. Although they were Ally’s friends. But it was a good time nonetheless, and they introduced me to a new drink – Captain Morgan. In that time, spiced rum & Coke has replaced screwdrivers as my drink of choice. Screwdrivers were too bitter, anyway.
Also in August, my car was broken into. Pissed me off, but at least the scumbag cleared out all the junk in my car. It’s much tidier now.
Yep, August was an interesting month for me – remember the shitty roommate situation I talked about above? The one we so naïvely thought was over and done with? Well, in August, our Asian roommate underwent a transformation, from being simply lazy to being a prick. At first, we put up with his constant smoking. With parking his ass on my couch while playing Mehicán Black Ops at full volume. With leaving the burner on after taking the pot off the stove. With letting his tomato-can ashtray catch fire on the front porch. But toward the end of the month, our washing machine crapped out. When we contacted the landlord, she arranged to have it replaced. On the day the service guy arrived, I was at work, the musician housemate had to leave for work, Ally had to leave for her new job – and the Asian roommate had to go hang out with his friends. When the service guy arrived, the Asian roommate bolted out the door, leaving Ally to wait for the service guy to leave, and thus being an hour late for work herself. Our Asian roommate told her to just leave a key for the service guy and tell him to put it in the mailbox – yeah, that makes sense, given how close we are to Regent Park. When Ally confronted him the next day, he got his back up and defended his prioritizing friends over other people’s jobs. I guess when the government pays your rent, you feel entitled to lose your sense of responsibility. He also called her a racist because the service guy was black. No, dummy, it’s because normal people don’t leave their key in the mailbox and leave service people alone in your house. But when you have no possessions of any value in the house and rely on your housemates for everything from furniture to internet to pots and pans, I guess you have nothing to lose, right? Anyway, Ally relayed this to our landlord, who said there was nothing she could do. We had enough. We gave our notice. But the battle was not over yet. Thankfully we were able to take a step back for a week.
On September 11th, Ally and I got up at some ungodly hour to fly to New York. I had been talking about going there ever since I got back from Europe in 2008, and Ally finally called me on it and booked the tickets. It was great to get away! I have a detailed (some might say too detailed) summary of the trip typed elsewhere, but I’ll summarize the summary here: Arrived in Newark on the sweatiest day in recent memory; bought some American cereal; saw the Crack is Wack playground; ate at the Seinfeld restaurant; and saw a show at the Apollo – what an introduction! Next day wandered around and saw the Met – a shitty day for photography though, so I was grumpy. Next day, saw the World Trade Center memorial and went to Staten Island. The WTC memorial was well done, although the symbolism of the moment seemed to be lost on a few tourists smiling for selfies with the pools in the background – very disrespectful. The view from Staten Island was awesome, and helped pull me out of the funk I entered on the second day. On Day Four we went to the top of the Rockefeller Center, which was probably the highlight of the trip for me – such an awesome view! I took pictures up there for an hour and a half. Day Five was my birthday – Ally treated me to dinner at a fancy restaurant in Little Italy, where a fight broke out – and ended – within 15 seconds of sitting down. Awesome. We walked across the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn to end the evening with some nighttime pics while the rats scurried about. On Day Six, we kinda just wandered around until it was time to take the harrowing Megabus ride back to Toronto. Bad idea! That bus drove way too fast for a double-decker, and it was literally freezing outside that night. Next time, fuck saving money – we’ll fly both ways. We got home sometime around 5:00am, at which point I dove my frozen body into bed and got some sleep.
Not long after returning home, the roommate war started back up – this time, the landlord joined in. After asking her for Laundromat money to compensate for the broken washer, she got mad at Ally. We showed our rooms to a bunch of interested people; one of whom was on welfare. The landlord didn’t like that, and when we asked her about finding new tenants to replace us, she got even more angry, calling Ally “entitled”. So I sent her a reply, listing off a few gems that our Asian friend had said while showing the apartment to a few other interested people:
1. “I said in the ad that we’ll give brownie points to anyone who has a TV and can put the bills in their name.”
2. “Are you willing to put the bills in your name? We can’t because we don’t have credit.”
3. “We’re hoping to have at least one girl here, because otherwise this place would look like a pigsty.”
I never heard from the landlord again after that e-mail.
After that, we stopped putting in any effort to maintain the apartment. The slob game can be a two-way street. We found a new apartment that a friend of Ally’s was leaving, and happily jumped on board. Our moving day was exhausting, having to climb up two flights of stairs with all our stuff. I got in the shower afterward (details omitted) and laughed hard at something (details omitted), and my stomach went into a crippling spasm – I had to crouch down for a minute to relieve the pain. But it was so worth it. Our spirits were buoyed by comments about never having to deal with the old place again. We’ve only been here for two and a half months, but it’s in a nicer neighbourhood that isn’t a thoroughfare for gangsters and trash-rummagers; we still have easy access to the TTC; we don’t hear screaming rakins trying to kill each other in the tree outside our window; we don’t hear sirens every night; we don’t have to wipe cat fur off the counter; we don’t have to wipe slime out of the fridge; we don’t have to smell smoke every time we enter and exit the building; our landlord actually takes initiative to replace broken appliances, and we don’t have to deal with any roommates’ stupid bullshit!
The rest of the fall was fairly busy with work, Christmas shopping, photography, and so on. Ally’s brother and sister-in-law had another baby. Heather, David and I re-enacted some old pictures, ranging from approximately 1989 to 2003, which was a lot of fun, to give to Mom and Dad for Christmas, which they loved. My favorite re-enactment was of David and I holding up our Bibles in June of 2001 after we got confirmed. We re-enacted it by posing with our copies of The God Delusion. Jeremy’s Zoo party was a good time of sneaker-skating down icy sidewalks and getting kicked out of the Dance Cave, as is, of course, tradition (South Park reference!). As we transition into winter (who are we kidding; it’s been winter for the past month), I can only wonder what 2014 will bring. I spent most of New Year's Eve working at Center 1, although I'm sure it was harder on the clients than it was on me. Then I came home to Ally and we spent the night in -- can't get drunk when you have to work in rehab the next day! I just hung up my new TTC subway calendar (that’s right!), and I'm off to work again soon. I know one thing I’m looking forward to in 2014: The new Cosmos series!
Anyway, I’ll end with a few bits and pieces that I didn’t mention in the chronological story:
1. 2013 was the Year of Weddings: I attended two weddings in January, two in August, and one in October.
2. Music:
-Best New Album/only new album I bought: 13 by Black Sabbath. Very impressed with the darkness and power of this comeback! Especially “God is Dead?”!
-Song of the Summer: “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. I hated Daft Punk before this song.
-Favorite Album of the Year: Casino by Al Di Meola. I first heard this album on vinyl at Ally’s place in 2012, and I listened to it all the time in the winter of 2013. I recommend it to any guitar players.
-Favorite Artists of the Year: Al Di Meola, Bob Marley, Dr. Dre, The Smashing Pumpkins, various electronic artists resembling STS9.
-Ain’t Nobody Got Time Fo Dat!
3. Books I read:
-The God Delusion, by Richard Dawkins: The first few chapters were hard to follow, but the second half delightfully rips into the follies and dangers of organized religion as they play out violently in society.
-Broca’s Brain, by Carl Sagan: Not finished it yet, but it’s good. A collection of essays/articles from the ‘70s about space, science, anthropology, and so on. Ain’t nobody got time for fiction.
-In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts, by Gabor Maté: I just started this one, but it’s good so far, and is well-known in the Addictions field, so I hope it will increase my understanding.
4. Things I did for the first time:
Attended a Muslim wedding ceremony; conducted two unsupervised family counselling sessions; made chilli – yes, this is a big deal, and it was delicious.
5. Disappointments:
Didn’t play with my band at all; didn’t record many songs; didn’t use Flickr very much, partly due to a disastrous redesign; and realized my recent education still may not be enough for a full-time job.
6. Accomplishments:
Got my F licence; made my longest “me driving” road trip (about 870km; made more bearable thanks to David and Heather); painted for the first time in probably 14 years; finally saw New York City; noticeably refined my guitar playing; read an entire book; and made it to a year and a half with Ally as of this writing ☺

Another storm system ushers in unsettled weather to the Bay Area. Even a morning thunderstorm was witnessed in my neck of the woods! This was storm #2 out of this 2nd storm series/'atmospheric river' event this month... Drive safe out there, fellas! (Video footage filmed January 19, 2017 around San Jose, CA)
Weather scenario/summary:
Three strong storms were aimed to affect California this week... After an atmospheric river had drenched the state earlier this month, more precipitation has arrived in California. A series of 3 strong storms were set to sweep across the state beginning Wednesday and continuing through next Monday, dropping widespread heavy rainfall and bringing strong gusty winds to nearly the entire state. These storms were to be fairly different in character from those which brought flooding to California a week earlier. Instead of featuring very warm, moist, and slow-moving plumes of moisture associated with a “classic” atmospheric river, these storms this week were instead would be fast-moving, relatively cold, and associated with a powerful Pacific jet stream. This stormy period was forecast to occur in a time frame from January 18-23, 2017.
Looking ahead: Storm #3 (Sunday-Monday) has consistently appeared likely to be the strongest in this series, bringing widespread intense rainfall and strong winds. This last storm in the series was to have the potential to be highly consequential from a hydrological perspective given the antecedent wetness. Additional t-storm activity was also possible statewide, as well...
In 1975 the new West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council and its Passenger Transport Executive, known as West Yorkshire Metro, issued a small brochure outlining the current situation soon after the formation of the PTE's direct operations and their intentions for the future. It covered topics such as aims and objectives, relationships with local authorities (the five new Metropolitan Districts) as well as the operational policies and future developments.
The brochure has some interesting period graphics showing the various modes of transport, the PTE and County's new logos as well as some of the uses of the new corporate identity and "Yorkshire Rose" logo. This page shows the new interlocking "WY" symbol, known as the Yorkshire Rose, and how it appeared on the new DoE standard bus stop flag that was being rolled out to replace the old individual operators versions that had existed prior to the amalgamation into the PTE's fleet.

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.
I have written at length, but here is the key article:
**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**
🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)
At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.
While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.
Apple refused to bow to Trump.
If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:
**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**
Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.
A company that does not pander to Trump—
That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.
youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp
We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.
Please take a look if you'd like.
This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.
I'll post the link below.

### **Synopsis**
Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.
Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.
To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.
During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:
*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*
Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

9 What is Individuality? What is originality?

It is a photo taken from Eurostar.
This video is an explanation.
I went to Milan in 2005.
At that time # I went from Milan to Venice.
We took Eurostar into the transportation.
This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.
When I changed the track # I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.
Is there a Japanese beside you?
Please have my video translated.

タイトル
“” A.I. アップルのアイデンティティについて””
www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...
gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

The lamp in the dome of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a true masterpiece of Islamic craftsmanship and design. This mosque, one of the largest in the world, features a main dome adorned with an impressive central lamp.
The lamp itself is an awe-inspiring piece of glasswork and metalwork. Made of brass and adorned with thousands of Swarovski crystals, the lamp is intricately ornamented and detailed. The light emanating from this lamp illuminates the dome and creates an atmosphere of serenity and beauty within the mosque.
This lamp not only serves a practical function of illumination but also holds deep symbolic significance in Islam. It represents the light of divine wisdom that guides the faithful in their spiritual quest. Furthermore, its central location in the main dome of the mosque symbolizes the importance of light and knowledge in the Islamic religion.
In summary, the lamp in the dome of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is a stunning work of art that combines traditional craftsmanship with profound symbolism, adding even more splendor and majesty to this important place of worship.
Another month gone away..
In this days I've been thinking to stop the project. I have no time and no fantasy and imagination..
I hope to find soon the inspiration :( For do this collage I used the app "photohive"
c1908 postcard view of Hamilton, Indiana. The postcard title refers to “Main Street,” but this must have been Fort Wayne Road, known as Wayne Street today. The photographer was standing at the intersection of Bellefontaine Road (identified as Defiance Road in the 1912 Steuben County atlas.¹). The shadows indicate it was late morning. The Hamilton map in the 1912 atlas shows the Wabash Railroad crossing from west to east at the south edge of town and then turning east-northeast and crossing Richland Township on the way to Ohio. However, the railroad isn’t clearly visible in this view and the map doesn’t show a depot. A small bridge in the distance (above the buggy) must have carried the road over Fish Creek.
The two buildings on the left in this scene are still standing on the southeast corner of the Wayne Street/Bellfontaine Road intersection, but the south half of the second building is gone. The GROCERIES sign advertised the business on that corner, but no other identification of the business name is visible. The word SODA was printed on the folded awning next door and was probably preceded by ICE CREAM. This may have been the location of a drugstore.
The potted tree stood in front of the next store to the south. The two signs above the awning are unclear, but the top sign appears to have a name painted on it. Beyond that tree, the Bell System sign on the utility pole advertised the location of a public telephone. These signs were common across Indiana before personal telephones became commonplace. The J. HARGER MEAT MARKET, CASH FOR HIDES sign appears to be standing in front of the two-story wood frame building. The wagon was parked in front of that building. A barber’s pole is visible farther down the street. It was standing beyond the fourth utility pole on that side of the street, but the shop itself was hidden by tree foliage.
Across the street, the woman with the bonnet was standing on the southwest corner at Church Street next to a small structure that might have been a public water well. The FISHING TACKLE HERE sign appears to be associated with a business on the southwest corner of that intersection. A sign advertising THE HAMILTON HARDWARE COMPANY stood at the curb in front of the building on the northwest corner of the intersection. The shape and format of the lettering on the sign hanging on the corner of that building strongly suggests it is advertising Garland brand stoves and ranges. Many hardware stores across Indiana displayed similar signs back then.
Farther north, another sign advertised RUDD & CO. DRUGGIST. The lower sign advertised ICE CREAM SODA, SOUVENIR POSTALS, FISHING TACKLE. (The souvenir postals were postcards.) A 1905 national druggists directory² included only two druggists at Hamilton. They were Rudd & Co. and Charles E Swift. A 1909 National Association of Retail Druggists publication reported, “… at Hamilton, Rudd & Co. sold out to Waldo Miller….” This photograph must have been taken prior to that sale.
Next door to the drugstore, the awning advertised HAMILTON BANK. A 1910 report³ said the bank received its state Certificate of Authority in 1905. O. H. Taylor was listed as president and cashier.

Per usual.. summarily reprimanded by the rinky dink golf-cart driving no-mask wearing authorities at Clipper Yacht Harbor. Being chided mid portage is nothing to fear though, as I have a surfeit of charm tactics to subdue any security officer in any clime on spec.
I would have posted a picture with perspective looking straight up at the bridge, but it was like an Australian toilet bowl under there, and every ounce of energy was needed for stability in the current.
Soo many sea lions and seal pups. Black oystercatchers, brown pelicans, gulls galore, cormorants and grebes of every stripe. Totally warm it felt like 80 degrees and the wind was minimal save for out in the strait.

Just drying out some starfish I obtained during me and my cousin’s trip to Bodega Bay…
*Our trip in summary: We started our day by hiking along Pinnacle Gulch Trail and headed down to Pinnacle Gulch Beach while taking in the gorgeous ocean views and coastline (with some fun with starfish and outrunning waves). It was also low tide so we got to see some sea life on the surrounding rocks. By noontime or so, we headed back to the car and headed to eat lunch at Olive Garden located up in Rohnert Park, near Santa Rosa, CA. After enjoying our lunch for quite a while, we ended the day by heading back towards the coast to watch the sunset around Bodega Dunes Beach (just north of Bodega Bay). Brrr, it was cold and windy but it was worth viewing the beautiful sunset over the vast Pacific. Once the sun disappeared beyond the horizon, we hurried back into the car to get warmed up and then quickly headed back towards home. Despite this being just a single-day trip, we enjoyed the great outdoors for a bit, away from the hustle & bustle of city life. ‘Til next time, safe travels! This book will give you a brief tour of European spray paint cans. My passion for aerosol cans began in 1985 East Germany at the young age of twelve, when my parents gave me my first paint can (see the story starting on page 24). After the political transformation in East Germany a few years later, I began to collect more cans. I got my first Western European cans from friends, on holiday, or at various graffiti walls. Some of my cans from those years are missing their caps, which weren’t considered so important back then and simply got lost over the years. I used many of the old cans myself when the graffiti craze crossed over from West Berlin in the early ’90s.
On the pages to follow, you will read about nearly 200 different cans from all around Europe. The paint comes from the collections of both my friends and myself. The cans are in alphabetical order by brand with few exceptions. I’ve included the production dates to the best of my knowledge.
Since these are only a small fraction of the cans that have been on the market in Europe, I would be grateful for help in preparing a second volume. There are some amazing collectors in places like Lille, France who have enormous collections of spray cans. It might be possible to put together another book of those.
I’ve decided not to include American cans because the range of spray paint available in the US alone could easily fill multiple books. For information on US spray cans, check out the work of Cap Matches Color, a group devoted to American cans that has compiled a tremendous collection. Their comprehensive website www.capmatchescolor.com and Facebook page are definitely worth a visit.

nalysis of BHP's Profitability in Newman and the Absence of a Dialysis Hostel for Local Indigenous Peoples
1. Executive Summary:
BHP, a major global mining company, generates substantial profits from its iron ore operations near Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. These operations have consistently delivered high returns, contributing significantly to both the company's overall financial performance and the revenue of the Western Australian government. Simultaneously, the Indigenous population in the Newman area and the broader Pilbara region experiences a disproportionately high prevalence of chronic kidney disease, often leading to a critical need for dialysis treatment. While BHP has engaged in various community development initiatives in the region, including some contributions to healthcare infrastructure, a dedicated dialysis hostel to accommodate Indigenous patients from remote communities requiring regular treatment in Newman has not been established despite a clear and persistent need. This report examines the interplay between BHP's profitability, the healthcare needs of the local Indigenous population, the company's existing community contributions, the complexities of establishing a dialysis hostel in a remote area, the roles and responsibilities of mining companies and government in healthcare provision, differing perspectives on corporate social responsibility, existing partnerships, and the history of proposals related to a dialysis hostel in Newman. The analysis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to this apparent disparity and to offer informed recommendations for addressing the identified gap in healthcare infrastructure.
2. BHP's Iron Ore Operations and Profitability in the Pilbara:
BHP's presence in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, particularly its Newman Operations, forms a cornerstone of its global iron ore business. Operating since 1968, Newman Operations, encompassing Newman East and Newman West, contribute a significant volume of approximately 78 million tonnes to BHP's total annual iron ore production. The Pilbara itself is a critical global source of iron ore, with Western Australia being the largest supplier worldwide, accounting for over a third of the global supply. BHP's contribution to this sector is substantial, representing a significant portion of the state's exports and employing a considerable number of people in the region.
The financial performance of BHP's iron ore operations in the Pilbara is consistently strong. In the fiscal year 2024, the company achieved record production volumes at Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO), solidifying its position as the lowest-cost major iron ore producer globally. This efficiency translates directly into high profitability, with WAIO consistently achieving Underlying EBITDA margins exceeding 50% for the past eight years, reaching 54% in FY24. The company's overall revenue in FY24 saw a 3% increase to US$55.7 billion, primarily driven by higher realized prices for key commodities, including iron ore, and increased sales volumes. The underlying attributable profit for the same period was US$13.7 billion, a 2% increase year-on-year. These figures underscore the immense profitability of BHP's operations in the Pilbara region. Furthermore, BHP is a major contributor to government revenues in Australia. In FY24, total payments to governments amounted to US$11.2 billion. While the specific contribution from WA is not isolated in this figure, data from FY23 indicates that Australia accounted for the largest share of BHP's global economic contribution (US$40.4 billion) and government payments (US$12.1 billion). BHP also invests significantly in community development in Western Australia, allocating US$518 million in FY23 towards such initiatives.
The consistent status of BHP's WAIO as a low-cost producer with remarkably high profit margins year after year indicates a robust and financially powerful operation in the Pilbara. This sustained financial strength over an extended period suggests that the company possesses a significant capacity to allocate resources towards initiatives that benefit the communities in which it operates, beyond its core mining activities. The substantial contribution of BHP's operations to the revenue of the Western Australian government also highlights the significant economic influence of the company in the region. This interdependence raises important considerations about how these government revenues are utilized and the shared responsibility between the government and BHP in addressing the needs of the communities impacted by mining.

3. The Prevalence of Kidney Disease and the Need for Dialysis Among Indigenous People in Newman:
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) poses a significant health challenge for Indigenous Australians, with prevalence rates considerably higher than those of their non-Indigenous counterparts. Data from 2012-13 revealed that nearly one in five Indigenous Australian adults exhibited biomedical signs of CKD, a rate twice as high as that for non-Indigenous adults. The likelihood of developing CKD increases with age and is particularly elevated among individuals residing in remote areas. Alarmingly, Aboriginal people living in remote regions experience incidence rates of end-stage kidney disease that can be up to 20 times the national average.
This higher prevalence of CKD directly translates to a disproportionate need for kidney replacement therapy, including dialysis. Hospitalization rates for dialysis care are eleven times higher for Indigenous Australians compared to non-Indigenous Australians. Similarly, the incidence of kidney failure requiring replacement therapy is six times as high for Indigenous Australians. As of December 2021, 85% of Indigenous Australians receiving kidney replacement therapy were undergoing dialysis.
While specific data on the prevalence of kidney disease among Indigenous people in Newman is limited within the provided research material, the established pattern of higher rates in remote areas strongly suggests that the Indigenous community in Newman and the broader Pilbara region faces a similar, if not more severe, burden of CKD. The very existence of a specialist partnership with the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) in Newman, focused on improving the detection and treatment of kidney disease, underscores the significance of this health issue within the local Indigenous population. Data from the Shire of East Pilbara in 2021 indicates that 1.5% of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons reported having kidney disease. However, this figure likely represents only those who are aware of their condition, as a substantial number of individuals with early-stage CKD remain undiagnosed.
The consistently reported and significantly elevated rates of CKD and the subsequent need for dialysis among Indigenous Australians, particularly in remote regions such as the Pilbara, highlight a critical and long-standing health inequity. This disparity is not a marginal difference but a substantial order of magnitude, indicating systemic factors and an urgent need for accessible and culturally appropriate treatment options. Furthermore, the considerable number of Indigenous individuals with CKD who are unaware of their condition until later stages emphasizes the critical importance of not only providing treatment facilities like dialysis but also implementing robust early detection and preventative health programs within these communities. A dialysis hostel, while essential for those with end-stage kidney disease, represents just one component of a comprehensive strategy needed to address this health crisis.

4. BHP's Current Community Development and Health Initiatives in Newman:
BHP actively engages in community development initiatives in Western Australia, demonstrating a commitment to the regions where it operates. In FY23, the company invested a significant sum of $518 million in community development projects across the state. This investment encompasses a range of programs, including direct contributions to social initiatives and support for numerous local organizations through their community grants program. The BHP WA Community Grants program specifically provides ongoing support to not-for-profit entities in areas like Newman, focusing on initiatives that promote positive community, environmental, and economic development, aligning with their objective of fostering thriving and empowered communities.
Within Newman, BHP has made notable contributions to healthcare infrastructure and services. A significant example is their $15 million contribution towards the development of the new $61.4 million Newman Health Service. This modern facility offers a range of essential services, including an emergency department, inpatient beds, and a dental clinic, representing a substantial enhancement to the local healthcare system. Recognizing the specific and pressing need for dialysis services within the community, BHP committed $1.9 million in 2021 to the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) for the establishment of a dedicated dialysis clinic located within the PAMS healthcare center in Newman. This purpose-built clinic is the first of its kind in the town and has the capacity to treat up to ten patients daily, providing crucial access to specialized dialysis treatment. Further supporting PAMS, BHP has also funded additional General Practitioners to address the high demand for primary healthcare services in Newman. During the COVID-19 pandemic, BHP also provided essential medical supplies, such as rapid antigen tests and surgical masks, to PAMS for distribution within Newman and surrounding communities. BHP's partnership with Telethon has also channeled funds to the Upstream Health Project, managed by PAMS, which delivers culturally appropriate maternal and child health services in the East Pilbara region.
Beyond direct healthcare investments, BHP supports other initiatives in Newman that have indirect positive impacts on health and well-being. They partner with the Newman Neighbourhood Centre, providing financial support for various community programs and subsidizing childcare fees, thereby contributing to the overall well-being of families and children. This center serves as a vital hub for community connection and provides access to a range of essential services, including a community nurse. BHP is also a key partner in the Pilbara Education Partnership, investing in educational services within public schools in Newman and the surrounding areas. Improved educational outcomes are recognized as having long-term positive effects on health literacy and overall quality of life. Furthermore, through a collaborative effort with Fortescue and the WA Government, BHP is investing in the Pilbara Safe Spaces program in Newman. This initiative aims to provide safe environments for vulnerable youth and connect them with crucial support services, including an Indigenous Healing Service, addressing social determinants of health that can significantly impact mental and physical well-being. BHP also partners with Wanslea to enhance the availability of affordable childcare services in regional Western Australia, including the Pilbara, which can positively impact the health and well-being of families.
While BHP has made considerable financial contributions to the healthcare infrastructure in Newman, particularly through the funding of the dialysis clinic at PAMS, the persistent need for a dedicated hostel for dialysis patients suggests a potential gap in fully addressing the needs of individuals traveling from remote communities for treatment. The existing clinic, while essential, may not adequately support patients requiring frequent and potentially extended treatment periods who lack suitable accommodation in Newman. BHP's broader community investments, while valuable and contributing to the overall well-being of the community, may not directly address the immediate and specific need for accommodation for dialysis patients from remote areas.

5. The Costs and Logistical Considerations of Establishing a Dialysis Hostel in Remote WA:
Providing dialysis treatment, especially in remote regions like Newman, entails significant financial investment and logistical planning. In 2009, the estimated annual cost for one person receiving in-center dialysis was approximately $80,000, with expenses potentially higher in rural and remote areas. More recent data from 2015-2016 indicated that the annual per-patient cost for hemodialysis in remote satellite units ranged considerably, with a median cost of around $99,888 per year. Notably, remote services often face higher operational costs, primarily driven by increased staffing expenses.
Establishing the necessary infrastructure for both dialysis treatment and accommodation also requires substantial capital expenditure. In 2016-2017, the construction of a 20-bed renal hostel in Derby cost $6.3 million, while a four-chair renal dialysis unit in Fitzroy Crossing was built for $3.6 million. A more recent example is the $7.4 million investment in a new renal hostel in Kalgoorlie, with capital funding provided by the Commonwealth Government and ongoing operational costs covered by the WA Government.
Operating a dialysis hostel in a remote setting like Newman presents a unique set of logistical challenges. These include ensuring consistent staffing with qualified medical professionals trained in dialysis treatment, maintaining reliable utilities (water, electricity), providing regular cleaning and maintenance of the facility, and securing adequate insurance coverage. Transportation of patients from their often-remote communities to the hostel and then to their dialysis appointments is another significant logistical and financial factor that needs to be carefully considered. Furthermore, it is crucial to provide culturally appropriate and comfortable accommodation for patients who may be away from their families, communities, and familiar support networks for extended periods while undergoing treatment. The accommodation itself needs to be conducive to the health and well-being of patients with compromised immune systems.
The considerable capital costs associated with building renal hostels and the substantial annual per-patient cost of dialysis treatment highlight the significant long-term financial commitment required to establish and operate a dialysis hostel in Newman. This suggests that a sustainable solution would likely necessitate a collaborative funding approach involving contributions from various stakeholders, including potential capital funding from mining companies like BHP and a commitment from the government to cover ongoing operational expenses. The higher operational costs typically encountered in remote areas underscore the challenges of attracting and retaining qualified medical staff and managing the complex logistics involved in delivering healthcare services in such settings. Any plan for a dialysis hostel in Newman must carefully consider these staffing and logistical complexities to ensure its long-term viability and effectiveness. The successful establishment of renal hostels in other remote communities within Western Australia, such as Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, and Kalgoorlie , offers valuable insights and potential models for developing a similar facility in Newman, particularly regarding funding frameworks and operational considerations.

6. The Roles and Responsibilities of Mining Companies and Government in Healthcare Provision:
In Australia, the provision of healthcare services is primarily the responsibility of the government, at both the federal and state levels. This includes ensuring access to essential medical services for all citizens, irrespective of their location, including those residing in remote mining regions. The Western Australian government's commitment to funding the ongoing operational costs of renal hostels in regional centers like Kalgoorlie exemplifies this fundamental responsibility.
However, mining companies also have certain responsibilities related to the health and well-being of the communities in which they operate. Legally, mining companies are obligated to ensure the safety and health of their employees and contractors within the workplace. This includes implementing comprehensive occupational health and safety standards, conducting regular health assessments for workers exposed to specific occupational hazards, and actively monitoring for the development of work-related diseases. These legal obligations are typically mandated through state-based legislation, such as the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 in Western Australia.
Beyond these legal requirements, the concept of a "social license to operate" has gained increasing prominence in the mining industry. This concept recognizes the need for mining companies to earn and maintain the acceptance and support of local communities and stakeholders, particularly Indigenous communities, who are often directly impacted by mining activities. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) extends beyond legal compliance and encompasses a broader range of voluntary actions and commitments undertaken by companies to address the social and environmental consequences of their operations and to contribute positively to the well-being of their stakeholders. This can include investments in community health initiatives, educational programs, and infrastructure development. The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) acknowledges the importance of mining companies fostering opportunities that lead to improved health and economic outcomes for Indigenous communities.
The World Bank emphasizes that ensuring the health of local communities in mining regions is a shared responsibility between mining companies and government health authorities, advocating for joint prioritization and aligned interventions. In Australia, a growing trend involves collaborative partnerships where mining companies work in conjunction with government agencies, Indigenous organizations, and healthcare providers to address specific community needs.
While the government bears the primary responsibility for ensuring healthcare access for all citizens, the significant economic influence and substantial presence of mining companies in regions like the Pilbara create an environment where these companies are often expected to contribute to the well-being of the communities in which they operate, extending beyond their direct workforce. This expectation is particularly pronounced when addressing the health needs of Indigenous communities who may be disproportionately affected by health issues, such as the high prevalence of kidney disease. The legal health responsibilities of mining companies are primarily focused on their employees and the management of occupational health hazards. The health needs of the broader community, while increasingly falling under the purview of social responsibility, occupy a less clearly defined area of obligation. This ambiguity can lead to ongoing discussions regarding the appropriate level of involvement for mining companies in addressing community health issues like the significant dialysis needs of Indigenous people in Newman.
7. Perspectives on the Social Responsibility of Mining Corporations Towards Indigenous Health:
There are varying perspectives on the extent to which mining corporations like BHP bear social responsibility for the health and well-being of Indigenous communities in the regions where they operate. One perspective argues strongly that due to the significant impact of mining operations on the environment and social fabric of Indigenous lands, companies have a profound ethical obligation to contribute to the health and well-being of these communities. This viewpoint emphasizes that addressing the substantial health disparities faced by Indigenous Australians, including the alarmingly high rates of kidney disease, aligns with broader national goals of reconciliation and closing the gap in health outcomes. Furthermore, proponents of this view argue that highly profitable companies like BHP possess a greater capacity, and therefore a greater responsibility, to invest in the communities that contribute to their success. Such investments can also foster stronger relationships and secure a more sustainable social license to operate.
Conversely, another perspective posits that the primary responsibility for providing healthcare rests with the government, which is funded by taxes and royalties paid by corporations like BHP. From this viewpoint, mining companies fulfill their primary social responsibility by generating economic activity, providing employment opportunities, and contributing to government revenue through taxes and royalties, which can then be allocated to public services, including healthcare. Defining the precise boundaries of a corporation's social responsibility can be challenging, and some argue that overreach could potentially blur the lines between corporate and governmental roles in service provision.
Critical perspectives on CSR in the mining sector raise concerns about the genuine impact of these initiatives. Some research suggests that CSR efforts can sometimes be strategically employed to enhance a company's public image or to manage regulatory requirements, rather than stemming from a deep-seated commitment to community well-being. There are also instances where legally mandated obligations or standard operational expenses are presented as acts of corporate philanthropy. The actual effectiveness of CSR programs in addressing the specific needs and concerns of Indigenous stakeholders, particularly those most directly affected by mining operations, has also been questioned.
The debate surrounding the social responsibility of mining corporations in relation to Indigenous health is intricate, encompassing ethical considerations, legal frameworks, and economic realities. There is no universally agreed-upon definition of the appropriate level of responsibility for a mining company in this context. The potential for CSR initiatives to be used for public relations purposes or to manage legal obligations underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and genuine partnerships with Indigenous communities to ensure that social responsibility efforts yield meaningful and sustainable benefits.
8. Existing Partnerships and the History of Dialysis Hostel Proposals in Newman:
BHP has established several partnerships in Newman that aim to support healthcare and community well-being. Their collaboration with the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) is a significant example, involving a substantial $1.9 million contribution towards the establishment of the first dialysis clinic in Newman. This partnership also extends to ongoing support, including funding for additional General Practitioners to serve the community. Furthermore, BHP has partnered with the Western Australian government on various community initiatives, including their $15 million contribution to the new Newman Health Service. They are also collaborating with Fortescue and the Cook Government, along with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), on the Pilbara Safe Spaces program in Newman. BHP also supports the Newman Neighbourhood Centre through funding for their diverse programs and has a long-term partnership with Wanslea to improve childcare services in regional Western Australia, including the Pilbara.
Despite these partnerships and contributions to healthcare in Newman, there has been a recognized and long-standing need for a dedicated dialysis hostel to accommodate patients traveling from remote Indigenous communities for treatment. A news report highlighted the dire circumstances faced by these patients, who often endure overcrowded living conditions or even sleep outdoors while undergoing life-saving dialysis. The report noted that other regional centers in Western Australia with dialysis facilities, such as Kalgoorlie and Port Hedland, have established hostels, and similar facilities were planned for Broome and Karratha, but not for Newman.
The news report also revealed that BHP had donated five abandoned houses in Newman with the intention of them being converted into a short-term hostel for dialysis patients. However, advocates involved in the proposal indicated that a significant funding shortfall of $9 million was still required to renovate these derelict buildings to a suitable standard for accommodating vulnerable patients. The report suggests that progress on this hostel development had been slow, leaving a critical need unmet.
BHP's donation of houses for a dialysis hostel indicates an initial acknowledgment of the accommodation needs of dialysis patients from remote communities. However, the considerable funding gap that remains for the necessary renovations and the apparent lack of further progress suggest a potential disconnect between this initial gesture and a comprehensive solution to the problem. The fact that other regional centers with similar mining operations and Indigenous populations requiring dialysis have successfully established hostels underscores that the lack of such a facility in Newman is not a unique situation in remote WA. It raises questions about the specific challenges or lack of coordinated effort in Newman that have impeded the development of this crucial infrastructure, despite BHP's significant presence and profitability in the region.
9. Conclusion and Recommendations:
The analysis reveals a stark contrast between BHP's substantial and consistent profitability from its iron ore operations near Newman and the persistent lack of a dedicated dialysis hostel for the local Indigenous population, who experience a disproportionately high burden of chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis. While BHP has made significant contributions to the Newman community's healthcare infrastructure, including funding a dialysis clinic and supporting other health-related initiatives, the absence of suitable accommodation for patients traveling from remote communities for treatment remains a critical unmet need. The costs and logistical complexities of establishing a dialysis hostel in a remote area are significant, requiring a collaborative approach involving both corporate and government support. The responsibility for healthcare provision primarily lies with the government, but the concept of a social license to operate and corporate social responsibility suggests that highly profitable companies like BHP have an ethical obligation to contribute to the well-being of the communities impacted by their operations. The history of a proposal involving BHP's donation of houses for a hostel, which has stalled due to a lack of funding for renovations, highlights a missed opportunity to address this pressing issue.
To bridge this gap and ensure that Indigenous people in the Newman region have equitable access to life-saving dialysis treatment, the following recommendations are put forth:
BHP should make a substantial financial commitment to fully fund the capital costs required to convert the donated houses or build a new, fit-for-purpose dialysis hostel in Newman. Given their consistent high profitability in the region , BHP has the financial capacity to address this critical need. This would build upon their initial donation and demonstrate a genuine commitment to the health and well-being of the local Indigenous community.
The Western Australian Government should commit to funding the ongoing operational costs of a dialysis hostel in Newman. This would align with their responsibility for providing essential healthcare services and mirror their support for similar facilities in other regional centers.
A collaborative partnership should be formalized between BHP, the WA Government, the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS), and representatives from the local Indigenous community to co-design and oversee the development and management of the dialysis hostel. This partnership would ensure that the facility is culturally appropriate, meets the specific healthcare needs of the intended users, and benefits from the expertise and resources of all stakeholders.
Beyond the immediate need for a hostel, all stakeholders should invest in and support long-term strategies focused on the early detection, prevention, and management of chronic kidney disease within Indigenous communities in the Pilbara. This includes culturally appropriate health education, regular screening programs, and improved access to primary healthcare services to address the root causes of the high prevalence of kidney disease.
By embracing these recommendations, BHP, in collaboration with the government and the local community, has the opportunity to make a tangible and lasting positive impact on the lives and well-being of Indigenous people in the Newman region, addressing a critical healthcare need and demonstrating a meaningful commitment to social responsibility.

Understanding the Context
I'm starting to look into why a profitable mining company like BHP might not have developed a dialysis hostel for Indigenous people near their Newman operations. My initial focus is on understanding two key aspects: BHP's financial success in the region and the extent of kidney disease among the local Indigenous population. This will help me establish the context for the user's question.
Next Steps in Research
To gain a comprehensive understanding, I plan to investigate BHP's existing community contributions in the Newman area, the typical costs involved in setting up and running a dialysis hostel in a remote location, and the general responsibilities of mining companies versus government bodies in providing healthcare services. I will also explore different perspectives on corporate social responsibility in this context.

BHP's Financial Performance
I've found that BHP's iron ore operations near Newman are indeed very profitable. Their recent financial reports show billions of dollars in profit, and the Newman operations are highlighted as being particularly efficient and cost-effective.
High Rates of Kidney Disease
My research confirms that Indigenous Australians in the Pilbara region, including near Newman, experience significantly higher rates of chronic kidney disease compared to the non-Indigenous population. This unfortunately leads to a greater need for dialysis treatment in these communities.
Existing Community Support
It appears BHP does contribute to the local community through various programs in education and health. These initiatives include partnerships for education, support for youth programs, and funding for health services, some of which are specifically targeted towards Indigenous communities.
Further Investigation Needed
To get a clearer picture, I now need to look into the typical costs of establishing and running a dialysis hostel in a remote area, understand the roles and responsibilities of mining companies versus government in providing healthcare infrastructure, and explore different viewpoints on corporate social responsibility concerning Indigenous health. I also want to see if there have been any past discussions about a dialysis hostel in Newman and BHP's involvement.

Financial Success Confirmed
I've confirmed that BHP's iron ore operations in the Newman area are highly profitable, contributing significantly to their overall financial results. These operations are recognized for their efficiency in the global market.
Disproportionate Health Issue
The information I found reinforces that Indigenous Australians in the Pilbara region, where Newman is located, face a much higher incidence of chronic kidney disease, leading to a greater need for dialysis services compared to other populations.
Ongoing Community Contributions
My investigation shows that BHP actively engages in community development in the Newman area through various initiatives. These include significant investments in education partnerships and support for programs aimed at improving the well-being of young people and families, including some health-focused projects.
Considering Broader Context
Having gathered substantial information on BHP's profitability, the prevalence of kidney disease, and their community contributions, I'm now considering the broader context. It seems the absence of a dedicated dialysis..

I know, I decided to stop (or to pause?) my 365 weeks ago, but I wanted to do this to see all the photos together. Even if I lasted 33 days, I feel proud of it and I'm very happy that I tried :) I have been tagged a lot of times, so here it goes:
#1. I am starting university in two weeks and although I'm looking forward to it, I'm super nervous too :S
#2. I had to move a week ago, but at the end I'm moving the next one. Living without parents? Cool :)
#3. But I'll miss them anyway.
#4.Usually the children are the ones who visit the parents on weekends to take prepared meals for all the week with them. In this case, I think it will be the contrary.
#5. I'll be babysitting since next week. But I'll earn like 100-120€ a month, so I need to seriously think how to pay for my expenses because my parents can't: new lenses, a remote, an external hard drive....just the trimestral metro ticket is 115€!
#6. So I think I'll start to sell prints (anyone interested?) and accept graphic and web design projects. So if anyone needs a print or a website, you already know ;) My online portfolio will be online soon :D
#7. But I'll probably need your help with the prints part because I'm kind of clueless about it :S
#8. I'm thinking about creating a Tumblr too.
#9. At this moment, I'm afraid of the future.
#10. Both the distant and the immediate. I have to go to the dentist again. I hate dentists :(
1909 postmarked postcard view of Main Street in Churubusco, Indiana. The photographer was looking southeast from the Washington Street intersection. The farthest buildings in this scene were south of the Vandalia Railroad tracks.
The sign on the building at the left edge of this scene advertised O. GANDY & CO. THE EXCHANGE BANK. The 1905 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Churubusco shows a repository in the north half of that building and the bank in the south half. The 1911 map set identified the repository as a carriage repository. A 1910 state auditor’s report¹ identified the bank as The Exchange Bank of O. Gandy & Co. and indicated a Certificate of Authority had been issued in 1905. Oscar Gandy was the owner. The 1907 Whitley County history included the following paragraph about the founding of the bank.
“On September 11, 1893, Oscar Gandy established the "Exchange Bank" under the firm name of O. Gandy & Co.. with a capital of $10.000. The Exchnage [sic] Bank has always done a prosperous business and is considered one of our most substantial financial affairs and has increased its capital to $25,000. The present officers and employes are O. Gandy, president; E. E. Gandy, cashier; John A. Pressler, assistant cashier; Ursula Magers, bookkeeper; Minnie Anderson, stenographer; and George Gump, janitor.“²
The history also included an entry on page 305 stating the bank building was built in 1898.
Two brick buildings stood south of the bank building. Business names were printed on the awnings, but are not clear enough to read. The 1905 map set shows a meat market in the north building and department store in the south building. The 1911 map set shows the meat market and a clothing, dry goods and furniture business in the buildings.
Next door, the wood frame building housed (from north to south) the Churubusco Post Office, a bakery and a barbershop according to the 1905 map set. The 1911 map set shows a newer and longer brick building that housed (from north to south) a notions business, the post office, a confectionery and tobacco business, a jewelry business and a barbershop. The only visible sign on that building in this postcard scene was the US POST OFFICE sign.
Across the street, the most distant businesses were south of Whitley Street. Two of the signs appear to advertise a MEAT MARKET and A GROCERY. The 1905 and 1911 Sanborn™ map sets show a grocery in that block, but not in the different locations for each year. Neither shows a meat market. Another small sign in that block advertised a lunch room, but it’s difficult to tell which building the sign is on. The 1905 map set shows two restaurants in that block and the 1911 map set shows a single restaurant.
Farther north (closer to the photographer) were signs advertising CITY DRUG STORE, DENTIST and ICE CREAM SODA. The soda sign undoubtedly belonged with the drugstore sign. It is difficult to tell which signs belonged with which building. Although these signs may appear to be in front of one of the two two-story brick buildings, they were probably in front of the wood frame building across the alley to the north. Both map sets show a drugstore as the second business north of Whitley Street in a two-story wood frame building on the north side of the alley. This was directly across Main Street from the post office. The 1905 map set actually identifies the store as a drugs and stationery business.
The 1907 county history listed J. F. Criswell & Son and Miss Mary Eikenberry & Co. as owners of drug stores in town. However, a 1905 directory of retail druggists listed the names as Craig & Boggs and Eikenberry & Co. A 1908 directory listed A. B. Craig and Mary Eikenberry.
The only dentist listed for Churubusco in a 1914 directory was Frank B. Weaver, a 1900 graduate of Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago. The dental office would probably have been upstairs and the Sanborn™ map sets typically don’t identify those offices unless they are in separate buildings.
The awnings at the right edge of the postcard were on a group of small buildings near the southwest corner of Washington Street. A wood frame building stood on that corner and is outside this view. It housed a grocery and millinery shop. The awning at the right edge of this postcard may belong to the millinery shop. The other awnings were on a brick building south of the corner, and one awning appears to advertise M. KOCHER. Both Sanborn™ map sets show a boots and shoes business at that location. The 1907 county history reported that Mr. Kocher built a brick building in Churubusco in 1892 and ran his boots and shoes business in the building.
