These roofs are covered with sod on top of several layers of birch bark [for waterproofing] on gently sloping wooden roof boards. This process keeps walls straight, provides excellent insulation and uses inexpensive materials. Even though the work is labour intensive, in the old days, a household would usually have a lot of manpower available and neighbours would usually be invited to take part in the roofing party, similar to a barn raising in the US.

Nowadays the grass roofs are built out of tradition, and simply because they look nice and fit in with the Norwegian countryside. (summarized from an article in Wikipedia)

Through the Ages

(Note: This text is an allegory inspired by a very current scientific theory, summarized in the link below)

Life seemed to rise to the assault of the Great Nothing,

This dead mountain which reigned in the center of Terra Nova, a high plateau of Poësia ...

Thousands of trees and plants seeking to colonize every fold of this non-living space like so many fighters on a battlefield.

________

This conquering view of life as we know it is uniquely human. It feeds on both popular culture (science fiction) and Science itself, legitimately curious about finding signs of life beyond Earth (ETI). We want to believe it! But for now…

_______

There, the Great Nothing resisted the expansion of vegetation, its hostile environment being unfit for life as we know it ... except, perhaps, in its simplest expressions, of the order of the molecule …

Standing on the promontory that allowed me to observe the present forces, the questions rush in my head: Would Nothingness be the dominant state of the Universe? Could organic life - moreover, its intelligent forms - be an exceptional situation, a highly improbable event on the slow trajectory of evolution? And the essential question I dreaded the answer to: Are we alone in the Universe?

If this hypothesis were to find its way through time, a pressing, existential reality would then impose itself on all of Darwin's children: life on Earth, in all its forms, is an extremely precious heritage we have, and us, the intelligent species, have the immense responsibility to preserve it.

The Cadini di Misurina form a subgroup at the southern end of the Sexten Dolomites and are located in the province of Belluno in Italy. The mountain landscape, which is very impressive due to numerous spectacular rocky peaks and pinnacles, is bordered by Lake Misurina in the west, the Drei Zinnen in the north and the Val d'Ansiei in the south and east and is considered a paradise for climbers. The highest mountain is the Cima Cadin di San Lucano (2839 m). As part of the Dolomite groups summarized by UNESCO under the "Northern Dolomites", the Cadini Group with all subgroups has been part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 26, 2009 (source: Wikipedia).

Piombìno is an Italian municipality of 32,254 inhabitants in the province of Livorno in Tuscany. The city preserves

evidence of its past, from its Etruscan origins to the Principality of Piombino of which it was the capital; its long history can be summarized in the architectural monuments and works of art preserved

in the historic center, to the creation of which Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea Guardi also contributed.

The state was born as a lordship in 1398 on the territories of the Republic of Pisa.

Two centuries later in 1594 the sovereignty of the Appiano family was finally recognized by the emperor with consequent elevation to a Principality.

False Creek (French: Faux ruisseau) is a short inlet in the heart of Vancouver. It separates downtown from the rest of the city. It was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856-63. While traveling along the south side of the Burrard Inlet, he thought he was traversing a creek; upon discovering his error, he gave the waterway its modern name.[False Creek].

Science World is a science centre [...] located at the eastern end of False Creek and features many permanent interactive exhibits and displays, as well as areas with varying topics throughout the years.] In 1986 it was the location of the Expo 86 World's Fair.

Side-blotched Lizard (Uta stansburiana).from the Channel Islands National Park. Was trying hard to photograph the Island Fence Lizard that is endemic to Channel Islands but it wouldn't be cooperative - well that's their loss! So lets take this opportunity to sing the praises of the side blotch lizard! They have a cool mating hierarchy discovered by biologists from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Its best described as a rock-paper-scissors strategy. Males have either orange, blue, or yellow throats and each type follows a fixed, heritable mating strategy. Orange-throated males are strongest and do not form strong pair bonds; instead, they fight blue-throated males for their females. Yellow-throated males, however, manage to snatch females away from them for mating. The large size and aggression is caused by high testosterone production. Blue-throated males are middle-sized and form strong pair bonds. While they are outcompeted by orange-throated males, they can defend against yellow-throated ones. Because blue-throated males produce less testosterone they are not as large as the orange-throated males, but it gives them the advantage of being less aggressive and able to form strong pair bonds. Yellow-throated males are smallest, and their coloration mimics females. This lets them approach females near orange-throated males and mate when the males are distracted. This is less likely to work with a female that has bonded with a blue-throated male. This can be summarized as "orange beats blue, blue beats yellow, and yellow beats orange", which is similar to the rules of rock-paper-scissors.

Eventually I will type up a long synopsis on this week, but will summarize it here by saying don't wait! The stuff you want to see wont be around forever, buy the plane ticket, rent the hotel, and go see it! Soon after clearing the storage yard at Oxy far in the distance, the engineer has all 5 of his sun beaten locomotives in the corner as they start up the stair step grade that will soon have the train down on its knees. You can see the rear of the train trailing down the hill while the head end has started up another step as they climb higher and higher. In this god forsaken land, the temp is hovering around 106 degrees and there's not another soul around. I had high hopes when I arrived, but seeing this train in the distance for miles before they got to me was a hell of an experience. Thankfully luck went my way for most of the trip. It was truly an amazing time. Major thanks goes to Mike Savona, Khang Lu, and Enrique C. who answered all of my seemingly endless questions about this fantastic railroad operating in the shadow of Death Valley.

Statsraad Lehmkuhl, a 111-year-old Norwegian tall ship, one of the world’s largest tall ships, is now docked in North Vancouver and will be open to the public for tours on Sunday. At 98 metres in length and 48 m in height, the three-masted barque is one of the largest (and oldest) tall ships still sailing the seas.

Although most of its career has been for use as a training vessel with up to 135 crew aboard learning traditional seamanship, today it is on an environmental mission, taking part in the One Ocean Expedition. The ship is laden with research equipment, academics and students, making it something of a “floating university,” according One Ocean. The 12-month circumnavigation has had stops in Europe, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.

A full moon in April is called a Pink Moon – the name originates from the native American tradition of naming full moon according to seasons. [...]. Its name is associated with the blooming of pink wildflowers called creeping phlox or moss phlox in early spring.

This super moon [which] is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its closest distance (perigee) to the earth, i.e., 356,907 km. [on April 07], was at 2.35 pm and will be the biggest and brightest full moon of 2020 at 10.35 pm EDT.

The super moon will have its usual golden hue at the horizon and will be white and the brightest as it moves overhead. [...] The best time to watch the super pink moon [in Vancouver] is just after moonrise on Tuesday, April 7th and just before moonset on Wednesday, April 8th. [...].

Guardian House

The park therefore, summarizes the essential symbolism of the life of Gaudí and Güell, objectively and in the Park with works and figures of sense Catholic, Masonic and alchemical. The alchemy is suggested at the entrance to why elephants who seem on the outside, are inside the house of the Alchemist-right of the flag - the Kiln with the egg-shaped dome and the chimney-to-left and , above the two exits frivolous or ill-smoke through the amanita. In all this, there is positive, white magic, and negative aspects of black magic, according to Catholic moral and honest Freemasonry in those years the turn of the century.

The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male. These ragged-crested birds are a powdery blue-gray; males have one blue band across the white breast, while females have a blue and a chestnut band.

With its top-heavy physique, energetic flight, and piercing rattle, the Belted Kingfisher [...] patrols up and down rivers and shorelines.

La Campiña is one of the most outstanding elements of the Cordovan landscape; Large areas of crops that have represented, over the centuries, the greatest source of wealth for the economic activity of Córdoba. Its lands have gentle forms of low hills that the Romans called Campania (field or land on the outskirts of the city easily cultivated) and the Muslims called Qampinya. Our Countryside, as a geographical unit with particular characteristics, was described by Muslim geographers in their studies of al-Andalus. This area, south of Córdoba, on the border with the provinces of Jaén, Granada, Málaga and Seville, has been an area since ancient times and watered by the Guadajoz, Cabra and Genil rivers, which feed the Guadalquivir. At about 300 m of average altitude and a continental Mediterranean climate, helped by a very fertile land, I don't know what nature it is, make this area one of the best lands for any crop, being able to get two different crops a year. They take all the cereals, legumes, sunflowers and settle for four drops of water... If the year is good and you can irrigate what can be irrigated, the harvest is already extraordinary. To name a town would be to offend a lot ... but the wineries and those of calm land stand out ... plus the olive groves. Its cereal production capacity has always been compared to the very sadly named one today: Ukraine, the granary of Europe.

We cannot forget that for reasons, I think political, I stopped producing beet and cotton. The very long trains with a lot of wagons, loaded at the strategically located stations and took the product to the factories, here the labor force remained, ... sugar factories, cotton factories were elsewhere.

This is the empirical, the undeniable, but today I am talking about the beauty of the countryside...I have made a modest report, but from a town in the countryside there are photographers to whom the countryside owes a lot...They are from Castro del Rio, a town with a photographic tradition, and Juan A. Bafalliu and Antonio Mármol are our partners in the "Photography and Literature" group, without forgetting Antonio Urbano, who is also our partner. Summarizing one of the richest regions in Spain... We will talk about the social aspect another day.

We can't forget the poets and I'm putting on a couplet by Salvador Rueda, I think he's from Malaga, but I've always liked it a lot:

When I'm in my room

with a match I point

the shape of a skeleton.

The countryside when you go out

is flooded with joyful light,

and the leaves of the branches

They clap their hands when they see you.

The Dove Tree, Davidia involucrata or Pocket Handkerchief Tree is an award-winning, medium sized deciduous tree with spectacular and very unique blooms. Large, drooping, creamy white floral bracts appear in clusters and flutter in the breeze like a flock of white doves. It is native to mountain forests of southwestern China and is the only member of its genus.

The showy, white “petals” are actually bracts, or modified leaves, and the purplish balls are clusters of tiny flowers. The species name is a reference to the botanical term “involucre,” which is a whorl of bracts surrounding several flowers (the classic example being a thistle).

The bracts start out small and green (aiding the plant in photosynthesis), and then turn white to attract pollinators to the flowers, mainly pollen-collecting bees and pollen-feeding beetles. The flower heads develop into attractive, hard nuts, each containing several seeds.

Genus name honors Abbe Armand David (1826-1900), French missionary in China, 1862-1873, who collected many plants and animals. (info summarized from several Google articles)

While processing the previous shot, I remembered that I captured another love lock shot some years ago, way down in southern Spain, in Almeria. It’s an art installation and an example of communal art. On the shiny structure in the middle is a fitting quote: “Es propio del amor si es verdadero, compendiar en un ser el munda entero” – “It is characteristic of love, if it is true, to summarize the entire world in one being” (Ramón de Campoamor).

With 11,961 burials Tyne Cot is the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world in terms of burials. 8,373 are unidentified.

The Memorial commemorates nearly 35,000 servicemen from the United Kingdom and New Zealand who died in the Ypres Salient after 16 August 1917 and whose graves are not known. The 54,395 missing before that date are listed on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

Tyne Cot marks the farthest point in Belgium reached by Commonwealth forces in the Third Battle of Ypres (1917). It's located near the village of Passendale (or "Passchendaele" and "Passiondale") which came to summarize all the carnage and suffering on the Western Front in the First World War, just as much as Verdun and the Somme.

Tyne Cot is built on a slope overlooking the landscape towards Ypres. It helps to understand the strategic advantage of these ridges. The Germans reinforced them with strongpoints. It took the Commonwealth Forces 4 months and 250,000 casualties to gain five miles. The scheduled breakthrough was not achieved. The cross of sacrifice in the cemetery was erected on a German pillbox.

The first of only two supermoons of 2021 rose in a Super Pink Full Moon last night (April 26). The next and last Supermoon of 2021 will occur in May.

April full moon is also called the Pink Moon, but it has nothing to do with its color. According to NASA, the April moon got its name after the herb pink moss, also known as creeping phlox, moss phlox or mountain phlox, which is one of the earliest spring flowers appearing in the United States.

Supermoons are full moons that appear bigger in the sky than usual, though the difference may not be noticeable to the casual observer. During a supermoon, the full moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is at its farthest from Earth. That’s because it coincides with the moon's arrival at perigee, the closest point to Earth in its orbit.

In the 8 images below the weaning process appears to last 3 days before the juvenile gull finally gives up and flies off to fend for itself.

Juvenile Glaucous-winged gulls are brown or gray with black beaks, and take four years to reach adult plumage. They peck the adult's red subterminal spot at the end of its bill in order to stimulate regurgitative feeding. Juveniles fledge at six weeks.

Gulls feed along the coast, scavenging for dead or weak animals, fish, mussels and scraps. In urban areas they accept food from people and peck open unprotected garbage bags in search of edibles. PS This probably explains how this juvenile survived 19 days away from the roof top nest and its parents. (Summarized from Wikipedia)

The Atrium of Abbot Argerich is the open-roofed courtyard area that sits directly in front of the Basilica. Five arches lead you to the main area. [see 3 images below + 9 sec vid of church bells ringing].

The marbled black and white floor of the atrium takes inspiration from the floor of the Capitolium in Rome that was designed by Michelangelo. The inscriptions at the centre are Latin and refer to baptism. Summarized from:

From one of the cities many parks

Most of my flower snaps are taken in and around the city of Molde. The second largest city in the county of Møre og Romsdal. It lies along the shores of the Romsdalsfjord in Western Norway.

This charming city has been nicknamed the “City of Roses” since 1913. It boasts incredibly scenic views and surroundings and is filled with beautiful parks and gardens.

Plantaginaceae, the plantain family, is a family of flowering plants in the order Lamiales. In older classifications it used to be the only family of the order Plantaginales, but numerous phylogenetic studies, summarized by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, have demonstrated that this taxon should be included within Lamiales.

Adult males can be up to 2.5 metres (8 feet) long. They can weigh 200 to 400 kilograms (450 to 900 pounds). They are often dark brown and look almost black when wet.

They sound like they are barking, whereas steller sea lions sound like they are growling

Males have a large dog-like head with a long, narrow snout, and small external ear flaps. The sea lions' large hairless flippers can support their body for “walking". Only males are seen in B.C. They [can be seen all year round] on rocky outcrops and islets, buoys and jetties. At sea, they are often seen alone or in small groups; they may gather in large “rafts” as seen in Porteau Cove.

On my way home I saw that the farmer had started mowing the meadow in front of the village. I grabbed my camera and quickly marched there because I knew storks, herons, foxes - they all love it when the cover of the little meadow dwellers disappears. In this picture a stork has just caught a mouse.

But the difficult thing about this shot was not that I had to sneak up on the stork in the shade of trees, or that you needed a telephoto lens. I was only able to take the picture because I watched an egret catching a mole two months ago. This one stork stood between several storks, its pose reminded me of the egret hunting. While all the other storks walked across the meadow searching, this one had already discovered something and was on the lookout. That's why I focused on him. I knew that as soon as the stork attacks its prey, it happens extremely quickly and you only have a chance of taking the picture if you already have the situation in the viewfinder. I had the camera up and ready for a full seven minutes without tripod until the stork hit blazingly fast with its beak and pulled the mouse out of its hole in the ground. Unfortunately (from the photographer's point of view) he didn't throw it theatrically into the air and then let it disappear down his throat, but in this position he snorted it up almost vertically. Less than two seconds after this shot, the mouse was history. From the small series, I chose this shot for my photo stream because, in my opinion, it summarizes the situation best.

To view this picture with the best resolution in full screen press the "l" (small L) and F11 keys. When enlarging the pic by just mouse clicking you lose quality. Enjoy!

Olympic Marina is presided over by its twin towers (1992): The Mapfre Tower on the right and the Hotel Arts on the left.
