While staying in Muscat, I spent a morning exploring the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, an architectural masterpiece and a haven for those drawn to light and shadow. Completed in 2001, this iconic landmark offers endless opportunities for creative compositions, with its domes, archways, and intricate patterns creating striking contrasts of light and shadow. – Muscat, Oman

The huge Chandelier in the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, Muscat, Oman.

The chandelier above the praying hall is 14 metres (46 feet) tall and was manufactured by the Italian company Faustig. Since the mosque is 90 metres (300 feet) high, the chandler looks proportional, but it used to be the world's largest chandelier, before again being replaced in this respect by the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. It weighs 8.5 tons, includes 600,000 crystals, 1,122 halogen bulbs complete with dimming system, and includes a staircase for maintenance within the chandelier. Thirty-four smaller chandeliers of the same design are hung in other parts of the building.

While staying in Muscat, we took a morning to visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of Oman’s most iconic landmarks. In Islam, it’s encouraged for wealthy Muslims to build mosques as a way to give back to the community, and Sultan Qaboos followed this tradition by commissioning this incredible site. Completed in 2001, the mosque can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The main prayer hall was impressive, featuring a massive Persian carpet that once held the title of the world’s largest hand-woven carpet. The chandelier hanging from the dome, made of Swarovski crystals, was equally striking. The mosque’s architecture beautifully blends Islamic, Omani, and modern styles, with its domes, minarets, and expansive marble courtyards creating a peaceful atmosphere – Muscat, Oman

Muscat is a fascinating city. It has an amazing mix of Western and Arabic architecture making it very interesting. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is definitely one of the highlight of the city. The most is amazingly gorgeous from inside. It also looks fabulous from outside. Specially the gardens around the mosque is spectacular.

It is a bit difficult to get this perspective of the image as those flower bushes are patterned such a way that it looks strange from inside with a wide lens. So I had to do a bit of walk around to high a high ground to get this perspective.

I wish the foreground plants had a bit more flower. But overall those lines of plants with the mosque at the background looked to me an interesting composition.

Notable is the hand-loomed prayer rug within the main musalla.

It took 600 Iranian women over four years to complete the 21-ton carpet, made up of 1.7 million knots and featuring 28 natural vegetable dyes.

The carpet measures over 70 x 60 meters (230 x 200 feet) and covers the 4,343 m 2 (46,750 sq ft) area of the prayer hall.

It was the world's largest one-piece carpet until the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi snatched the title.

The Sultan of Oman who has brought his country into the 21st century, and often beyond, ordered that this mosque be built. It was completed in 2001.

The Omanis worship a different branch of Islam called Ibadh, thus setting them apart from the rest of the Muslim world.

I loved photographing this mosque which was built in understated grandeur. The desert landscaping was also so appealing to me. This shot was taken right after sunrise and I also went back at sunset to photograph the mosque again.. You will see other images of this fine mosque.
