Thank you very very much to buttloaf for editing this at 1AM!

And here's a crappy pic with better lighting so you can see more details

This image is achieved by placing paint on a subwoofer and coordinating camera and flashes with an audio signal blasted through the subwoofer making the paint explode for a unique capture.

To create this photo, I placed a few drops of brightly colored paint onto a large speaker / subwoofer. Playing a loud noise through the speaker causes the paint to "dance", and makes very interesting, organic looking shapes. (I covered the speaker with a black plastic garbage bag to protect the speaker, and to give a nice shiny surface for the photo.)

To create the sound, I used a frequency generator app on a mobile phone, and connected it to the speaker. (A short burst at ~80Hz seemed to work reasonably well.) To freeze the motion, I set up a sound trigger that would trigger the off-camera flash when it heard the loud noise from the speaker. Since the flash is very short in duration (~1/5,000s), and since that was the only light in the room, it freezes the motion near perfectly.

After everything was set up, I just tried it a bunch of time until I got a shape that I liked. You have to clean up and re-create the paint drops after every couple of attempts, as the paint colors will mix after the first shot or two.

Thought I'd make an effort today!

Paint and glitter bouncing around on a subwoofer. I've done this before on a black background which is waaay easier than white. My lights are all wrong and I need to have a longer play. Once I introduced the glitter on the white latex stretched over the speaker it was game over! I just couldn't get the bloody stuff off. Not wanting to ruin another pair of underpants I called it a day :)

Strobism: 3 x YN560IV's. One in a 24" softbox to the rear 1/32 @ 24mm. This was the most troublesome to get the lighting right. One each either side of the paint 1/64 @ 24mm. All wrapped up in cling film for obvious reasons!

View from behind of the Warferdale SW 150 subwoofer. Taken specifically for the Crazy Tuesday July 2023 theme "From The Other Side". The sound is actually pretty amazing!

I had a pair of 12" JL Audio 12W3v3 subwoofers installed on Saturday. I've also written a related blog entry on the new gear.

Se siete a Roma venite alla Galleria de'Serpenti, in via dei Serpenti 32, questa sera dalle 23 in poi, per il Subwoofer - speciale Wonderbears!

This evening come to the exhibit and party "Wonderbears", one of the many events of this year's Roma Pride. The photographers are flickr's friends!

Subwoofers we got from Craigslist. It was only $10.

Here, in this photo, with my hand holding down the speaker cabinet cover, you can see the exposed 3.5" Midrange/Tweeter, and the 8" Subwoofer, and the port below it. Very nice speakers, with a very broad frequency response. Built in 1975.

Sound generated shot.. Without trigger.. Milk on a subwoofer, similar to my last attempt, but this time with two flashes..

The main 'issue' of the last shot, the missing light on the right part could be solved with a second flash and also the darker green food coloring looks better..

Due to the second flash I could also increase the sharpness of the sculptures.. But I'm still unhappy with the milk at the bottom in the foreground.. This should go sharper.. Maybe I've to go even further in the direction of f/20 or f/22 to get a greater DOF.. But this would require more light.. (Both flashes full power?)

I'm thankful for any advises in this direction..

This is the shape I was looking for, very hard to synchronize.

It's a combination of sound generated drops like this and collision like this.

The subwoofer vibration generates the "pillar", then another drop collides on top of it forming the "hat".

Too bad the flash got bad synch in this one, you can see some ghosting, mouse over the image.

Audio enhanced high-speed paint with subwoofer at 40hz.

2 12" Kenwood hooked up to a 600 watt amp, sounds quite good. At the radio around 1/2 way, it shakes the windows of nearly everything within 50 feet of it. After they break in, there's gonna be a whole new world of loud ;)

Same as before, don't lower the volume.
