Wagtails are slender, often colourful, ground-feeding insectivores of open country in the Old World. Species of wagtail breed in Africa, Europe and Asia, some of which are fully or partially migratory. Two species also breed in Alaska, and wintering birds may reach Australia.
They are ground nesters, laying up to six speckled eggs at a time.
Among their most conspicuous behaviours is a near constant tail wagging, a trait that has given the birds their common name. In spite of the ubiquity of the behaviour and observations of it, the reasons for it are poorly understood. It has been suggested that it may flush up prey, or that it may signal submissiveness to other wagtails. Recent studies have suggested instead that it is a signal of vigilance that may aid to deter potential predators.

No he sido una persona que haya coleccionado muchas cosas. Era de las que nunca terminaba las colecciones de cromos en el colegio. Un día me dio por coleccionar muñecas de porcelana pero me aburrí rápido y me acababan dando miedo así que decidí coleccionar otra cosa. Como salía mucho por ahí me dio por coleccionar entradas de discos, pubs, conciertos, pulseritas de festivales, posavasos y mierdas varias. Fue un desastre de colección ya os podéis hacer a la idea. Hasta que un día pasó algo curioso que cambió mi rumbo, conocí un hada. Sí, un hada. En nuestro mundo puedes conocer de todo y hadas también. Era un hada pequeña con unas alitas de mariposa rosas y un cabello largo. Típica hada de cuento. Estaba revoloteando en mi jardín y me acerqué a ella. Era tan bonita, delicada y emitía una luz tan especial que enseguida quise quedarme con ella. La atrapé con mis manos, no fue difícil el hada era muy confiada. Vi una jaula en casa y la metí ahí. Esa fue la primera de mi colección de hadas. Daban color a mis noches, me gustaba verlas brillar, cada una tenía un color diferente. (sigue en mi blog, link en información)

I decided to go up to see the Dippers on the River Bradford last Thursday, on the back of a very good forecast the day before.
I had an early start, in case parking got awkward later. It didn't look terribly promising as I set off from Nottingham, but I decided to stick with it and arrived about 8:30 am to squally, overcast conditions with the sun occasionally trying but largely failing to make an impression, so after 10 minutes I headed out for a walk up river, which was quite high, sans camera.
I spotted 3 Dippers, the first happily singing in the rain, by the time I got to the sheep wash pens at the top. Having walked past there towards the wooden footbridge, I walked back down and found one on the wall of one of the pens. On the way back down, I found another with nesting material, so stopped to watch and locate the nest. It came back several times with nest material, whilst I hid and watched; it was sitting outside the nest location for several minutes before a second bird appeared to a lot of chatter; second later they both flew off, chasing downstream, but only 20 yards or so to perch in midstream on rock and weed platform respectively.
The two birds then began displaying: one rapidly fluttering outstretched wings, looking slightly submissive, the other repeatedly bobbing, or dipping, flicking its wings out as it did so. This went on for a few minutes, before the first bird also began bobbing. There was then some brief chatter before they chased off downstream, where I later found just one bird. Not sure quite what was going off there, as only one seemed to be a nest builder, but interesting to see the interaction.
I didn't stay, as on arrival back at the car it still looked very overcast, so I drove back home. Here's a photo from my last visit, 3 years ago now.

There were many large flocks of Sandhill Cranes on the fields around Bosque del Apache, but for the most part only one group had frequent squabbles. Many hours were spend watching the behaviors. More aggressive birds would chase away those more submissive, sometimes giving them a kick or bite on their tail feathers. When two aggressive characters faced off, one or sometimes both would jump in the air, leaning back and kicking at the other. From my observations, it was more for show of dominance than actual physical combat. Few of the kicks landed and of the many squabbles I saw, none lasted more than a few seconds and no damage seemed to have been inflicted, other than to pride.
As shown in the image shared here, surrounding cranes were interested in the conflict and once done, they and the participants would raise their bills to the sky and seem to verbally work it out, or maybe declare who was the
victor. I'm guessing that the behavior was to impress the females who were interested in breeding with the most dominant and impressive male. (Grus canadensis)

Don't worry ... of course, it could get up ... just got tossed around by one of its brothers/sisters. LOL. There were 3 cubs and they took turns being the aggressor, the submissive one, and the one left out of the action for the moment. LOL. This cub was so adorable as it rolled around in the green grasses until it stopped, oriented, and got back up ... only to go back and re-join the play. LOL. So entertaining and quite adorable. I sure do miss seeing them.

These Great Blue Herons look ready to leave the nest and the hierarchy among the nestlings seems obvious. The dominant heron stands tall, and chatters with two of the others. All three of those herons' crests are elevated, and all three are animated.
The fourth heron sits crouched over, crest flat and in disarray. He is so far to the edge of the nest, that he appears on the verge of falling out.
This hierarchy can occur in many ways. For example, all of the eggs may not have hatched at the same time, and the ones that hatch first will have a head start at being fed and growing. The "sad sack" heron may have suffered an injury, an illness, or just received "bad genes" from its parents.

In 1990, Archaeological Survey of India discovered a sunken apsidal stepped well along with few sculptures inside it. This stepped well is located immediately to the north of the Shore Temple, its south edge abutting the northern wall of the Shore Temple. On the extreme south of this newly discovered shrine is placed a monolith statue of Varaha (Boar)in its zoomorphic form. This image is carved in round from a single boulder. The statue was found severely damaged, however, with efforts from ASI restorers, we now see this image in its near original glory. The other element of this stepped well is a slender cylindrical shrine constructed partly in rock and partly in stone. Beyond this cylindrical shrine, further northward, is a circular cistern or mini-well. This is cut downwards with a circular rim-like stone placed at the ground level.
ASI report mentions that this well provides potable water though situated near the ocean. Though Rabe accepts these sockets for the capstones of a well, however, he suggests that these might be constructed to hold the ‘pillar of victory’ taken by Narasimhavarman I from Vatapi (Badami) which probably was installed here.

Inscriptions On the Varaha (boar) monolith –
The Varaha sculpture is carved out of the mother rock like the three other animal sculptures in the Five Rathas nearby. It has four birudas (titles) of Rajasimha Pallava, some of his favorites, inscribed upon the base, in Sanskrit in the Pallava Grantha script. The birudas on the side are “Sri RajasimhaH” “Sri RanajayaH” and “Sri BharaH”. The biruda on the rear, under the varaha’s tail, is “Sri Citra KaarmukaH”. Between the legs of the boar on both the and under its tail, leaves of acquatic plants are sculpted. These are similar to those at the base of the Varaha and Gajalakshmi panels in the Varaha Mandapam. These indicate that the boar which represents Vishnu, is diving under water, not merely digging.
However, how to explain the engraved titles of Rajasimha, as the Chalukyan attacked the Pallava kingdom before the reign of Rajasimha. To explain it, Rabe tells that it was most possible that like other monoliths, this Varaha was also executed during the period of Narasimhavarman I(630–668 AD). Therefore, when the Chalukyas attacked the Pallavas, during the reign of Narasimhavarman I and Parameshvaravarman I, this monolith was present in the temple complex. As the Varaha was destroyed before the reign of Rajasimha (695 to 722 AD), it was Rajasimha who restored it and that’s how we find his titles engraved on it. (Above description source Internet).
