A key moment of the bee-eater mating ritual is when HE presents a wedding gift to HER. Notice HIS submissive pose - this will quickly change once SHE accepts the gift and consents to the next stage 😄

With full make up applied - and those delicate ornamental plumes called aigrettes in place it can only mean one thing.

According to Cornell:

Courtship displays in this species comprise a suite of displays, with each display, or combination of displays, playing a specific role in forming and maintaining the pair bond. The frequency of displays changes daily, with some appearing on just a single day during the breeding cycle. There appears to be a clear behavioral sequence where each sex stimulates a reaction in the other, leading to a reciprocal response that progresses through the breeding cycle.

The pair above have aleady done the following:

In the initial advertisement phase, males perform elaborate vocal and visual displays from prominent tree branches. These include a Stretch Greeting Display, Twig Shake, Bill Snap Display, Wing Touch, and Body Shake displays. A female who is attracted to a displaying male adopts a characteristic "peering attitude." Initially, the male displays aggressive behavior toward individual females approaching him, adopting the Forward and Full Forward Displays (See Antagonistic Behavior). The aggression starts waning after ~1 d, at which stage the Twig Shake Display gains prominence on days 2–3, and the male begins positioning the first few sticks of what would eventually become the nest. Toward the end of day 3, the aggressive behavior is replaced by a Circle Flight Display. This display culminates in the male presenting a stick to the female. Up to this point, the female's role in displays has been submissive. Once the display flights start, she moves onto the nest to receive sticks, performing an elaborate Stretch Greeting Display each time before accepting a stick from the male. This marks the start of the pair formation phase, during which nest construction commences.

During this phase, copulation takes place, and tactile stimuli such as Back Biting and Bill Snap Displays manifest for a few days, but become less frequent as the laying period concludes.

The pair above now is a later phase of courtship which includes bill grasping - as explained by Cornell:

Bill Grasping Display. Upon a bird's arrival at the nest, both mates perform a display initiated by their proximity. They raise their necks in S-curves, engage in intense bill grasping, fan their aigrettes, and raise their crests. The display may inhibit aggression and strengthen the pair bond.

The comments contain a male feather and dance display.

I was able to attend this offering.

The male, prey with the beak, turns towards the female and offers the insect to her by calling her. She accepts it by vibrating his tail fan and baring the feathers of her throat, then adopts a submissive position in order to entice the male to impregnate her.

Once the flying insect has been caught, the bee-eater returns to its perch and then performs an original behavior: the bird juggles with the insect in order to grab it by the thorax in its beak. It then violently strikes its prey against the branch it is on in order to soften the insect and possibly extract its venom. Once consumed, the bee-eater will soon discard balls containing the insect's non-digestible parts ... before resuming its hunt. Its daily consumption reaches up to 250 bees!

This is one of the local strays that would visit the resort in Cuba. They mostly seemed to be friendly and submissive. It was sad to leave without one of them.

Don't worry ... of course, it could get up ... just got tossed around by one of its brothers/sisters. LOL. There were 3 cubs and they took turns being the aggressor, the submissive one, and the one left out of the action for the moment. LOL. This cub was so adorable as it rolled around in the green grasses until it stopped, oriented, and got back up ... only to go back and re-join the play. LOL. So entertaining and quite adorable. I sure do miss seeing them.

“I want to touch the parts of you no one else has touched. I want to own the piece of you that has yet to be discovered. So stop resisting. Let go. Let it happen.” ― Riley Murphy, Requested Surrender

I decided to go up to see the Dippers on the River Bradford last Thursday, on the back of a very good forecast the day before.

I had an early start, in case parking got awkward later. It didn't look terribly promising as I set off from Nottingham, but I decided to stick with it and arrived about 8:30 am to squally, overcast conditions with the sun occasionally trying but largely failing to make an impression, so after 10 minutes I headed out for a walk up river, which was quite high, sans camera.

I spotted 3 Dippers, the first happily singing in the rain, by the time I got to the sheep wash pens at the top. Having walked past there towards the wooden footbridge, I walked back down and found one on the wall of one of the pens. On the way back down, I found another with nesting material, so stopped to watch and locate the nest. It came back several times with nest material, whilst I hid and watched; it was sitting outside the nest location for several minutes before a second bird appeared to a lot of chatter; second later they both flew off, chasing downstream, but only 20 yards or so to perch in midstream on rock and weed platform respectively.

The two birds then began displaying: one rapidly fluttering outstretched wings, looking slightly submissive, the other repeatedly bobbing, or dipping, flicking its wings out as it did so. This went on for a few minutes, before the first bird also began bobbing. There was then some brief chatter before they chased off downstream, where I later found just one bird. Not sure quite what was going off there, as only one seemed to be a nest builder, but interesting to see the interaction.

I didn't stay, as on arrival back at the car it still looked very overcast, so I drove back home. Here's a photo from my last visit, 3 years ago now.

Wagtails are slender, often colourful, ground-feeding insectivores of open country in the Old World. Species of wagtail breed in Africa, Europe and Asia, some of which are fully or partially migratory. Two species also breed in Alaska, and wintering birds may reach Australia.

They are ground nesters, laying up to six speckled eggs at a time.

Among their most conspicuous behaviours is a near constant tail wagging, a trait that has given the birds their common name. In spite of the ubiquity of the behaviour and observations of it, the reasons for it are poorly understood. It has been suggested that it may flush up prey, or that it may signal submissiveness to other wagtails. Recent studies have suggested instead that it is a signal of vigilance that may aid to deter potential predators.
