This is my take on the Sturgeon Moon of 2019. The full moon of August is often referred to as the Sturgeon Moon.

It was pretty incredible to witness this on Coronado Beach as the moon rose over the historic Hotel del Coronado. Though, I must confess, this image is a composite of two different exposures, one to get the detail of the moon, and one to capture the foreground, the moon actually appeared in this size.

A second upload from a couple of nights ago when my phone pinged with an aurora alert - a red one = high activity, so a real chance of seeing something.

So I headed off to the coast at Howick - only to be disappointed. No aurora!

However, there was an upside: on getting to the coast as a large red moon was visible just above the horizon. It was the waning Sturgeon moon {I found out the name from Em ie Mehcee, have a look at flic.kr/p/2nEe2eA).

So instead of green (probably) aurora light I got some red moonlight and a star-laden sky.

The Supermoon on the night was impressive and this image doesn’t give full judgement to the natural spectacle of the rising Full moon glowing with pink glow thank to hot weather. Event at the moment of moonrise it was about 30°C (86°F). This image was taken from Little Solsbury Hill raising above 191 m (625 feet) above Batheaston (part of it lighten up in the foreground). The hill is the site of an Iron Age hill fort is flat with wonderful views of the city of Bath and surrounding area. It is maintained by the National Trust and is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The moon was taken separately to keep some details in (f/8; 5 sec at 300 mm); foreground (f/13; 32 sec at 240 mm) blended in PS.

The last Supermoon is when the Full Moon comes closest to the Earth (that was on the 11th of August with 98% illumination), whereas the Full Moon (99.8% illumination) was on the 12th and moving away from the Earth by 1404 km. So, technically, this is not the Supermoon anymore, but I didn’t really care watching this spectacle.

This shot was taken couple minutes earlier than previously posted one (www.flickr.com/photos/sergeysmirnov/52283901634/) in landscape format (at focal length 115mm) to show more details of illuminated Batheaston and a bit of Bathford at the top right edge of the frame. The picture of the moon was taken separately (f/8; 5 sec at 300 mm), scaled down by a quarter and blended in Photoshop instead of a white ellipsoidal suppose-to-be-a-moon blob created by a long exposure for foreground.

The appearance of a full Moon has always been considered a special event for ages hence every month Full Moon is given different names. In August, it is most often called Sturgeon Moon amongst other given names like Grain Moon, Corn Moon, Lighting Moon or Lynx Moon, reflecting harvest time or weather changing conditions. I didn’t catch sturgeons or hear werewolf, but instead met a couple walking out a lama on a lead on the flats of Little Solsbury Hill amongst few other people who came to enjoy the show. The year's final supermoon graced the skies on August 12.

A supermoon is a full moon that appears larger and brighter in the night sky as it's closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit. This position is called perigee. The moon will not be full when it reaches perigee during the rest of 2022.

The August full moon was dubbed the Sturgeon moon by Native American tribes because it was considered a good time to catch sturgeon in the Great Lakes.

If you missed it, it will still be full tonight, Friday, for you to admire one of nature's glorious spectacles.

The Sturgeon Moon begins to take on a more normal appearance as it reaches ever higher in the night sky over Hotel del Coronado on the San Diego coast.

The Sturgeon Moon (the full moon in August) was shinning through the thin clouds. The iridescent lunar corona (or aureole) was also seen around the moon.

This photo of the Sturgeon Full Moon was taken after Midnight today with my old camera lens. I took this is a clearer shot from my balcony. Sadly I did not get to see the Partial Eclipse, despite being up in the wee hours of the morning. I like the clarity of this shot better but it was no longer a deep red.

August’s Blue Moon

This full Moon is also a Blue Moon! Specifically, it’s a seasonal Blue Moon, meaning that it’s the third of the four full Moons to occur within the season of summer. Typically, only three full Moons happen in a season, but when the dates of the full Moons and those of the equinoxes and solstices line up just right, a fourth full Moon can manage to fit into the season as well. The third full Moon in the series is then considered to be a Blue Moon. [...].

The Sturgeon Moon

August’s full Moon was traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer. The Old Farmer's Almanac

It is the Super Moon as it is closer to Earth than usually, hence appears about 10% larger. It is the Blue Moon as is the 3rd full moon of four in the summer season ends on September 22, September equinox. The full moon in August is often called the Sturgeon Moon amongst other names. It is named by North American tribes who caught the big fish more easily in August. Taken on the 20th of August (about 99% illumination) blessed by clear skies . Lansdown, near Bath. Thank you very much for your visit, favours and comments, always appreciated.

In the wrong place 😆 I had hoped it would be slightly further to the left! My lame attempt at photographing the Sturgeon Moon. Turns out I'd forgotten everything I'd learnt about night photography. This was rescued from several unrelated shots 😂

And I've got really burnt legs from falling asleep in the sun yesterday! Disaster zone.

Very lucky shot capturing a jet crossing the near-full Sturgeon Moon in August. Yes it’s a real shot! I was trying out some different settings on a clear night and I didn't realize what I'd captured until I saw the camera's LCD. I've seen these types of shots before and I've thought it would be great to take one some day. It's now off the list! This jet was likely flying to Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA).

Another shot a little later in the evening showing some moon reflection on the water.

I want to thank each and everyone who took the time to visit my little space here on Flickr. Have a super day!

I stayed up for the last 'super moon' of 2022 and tried to get my favourite subject of a plane flying in between the camera and moon (we are often on the Gatwick Flight path). Frustratingly most of the planes which would have made for a good image went over, under or round. I did, however get a few small silhouettes like this one, but they're not my best captures. The heat haze also made the image less sharp than ideal, but there you go.

The 'Blue Super Sturgeon' moon is a “blue” moon because it is the third full moon of an astronomical season with four full moons, and August's full moon is called the “sturgeon moon” because Algonquin tribes knew that large fish were more easily caught at this time of year.

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus died that death for YOU and I. The good news is there no more punishment for sin left, we were and are all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

The Sturgeon Moon is the last super moon of the year. It is the fourth super moon in a row.

This shot of the Sturgeon moon was taken during late evening as I was outside walking. The moon at that time appeared to be very red, possibly due to our poor visibility issues from smoke and haze in our air, every day! It is therefore also not a very clear shot, and it was taken with a shorter lens on my newer camera for which I still do not have a long distance lens.

I took this photo during our summer vacation in Greece (it’s a single frame). Within an hour of arriving at our apartment in Athens, I was in a cab heading to a park I’d never been to, on the hope that there was clear line of sight to the Parthenon for an alignment I had planned at home. PhotoPills indicated the alignment worked, and a single, not directly aligned Google Street View photo, gave me hope there could be an opening between some trees. Fortunately, I found the elevated location I was looking for and there was an opening. I knew I was in a good spot when, after being setup for a few minutes, I noticed three photographers walking toward my area. Very cool to capture!

From an enchanted evening at San Marco Pass with my amazing friend, PMC. We shared the beauty, as always....
