NORTH HOLLYWOOD - LAFD firefighters battled a blaze in three adjacent commercial buildings, fending off electrical hazards and building collapse, to extinguish the inferno in just over 3 hours.

A pile of oily rags were the culprit of a massive commercial structure fire on Lankershim Blvd just before midnight on November 1, 2019. Painting-related chemicals provided for a chemical reaction with the rags they were saturating and produced enough heat for them to spontaneously combust. Firefighters arrived to find fire blowing through the roof of the commercial building. Crews made access to enter the building and began cutting holes in the roof to ventilate the structure. As fire blew out of every hold that was cut, despite their continuous attempts to retreat to a less involved area to continue cutting, the decision was made to pull companies off the roof and out of the structure, and assume a defensive posture. The heavy fire load in the business quickly grew the fire, which spread to two more nearby commercial buildings.

The combined 40,000 square-foot fireball burned for over 3 hours, while 127 firefighters worked the perimeter to "surround and drown" the fire. Firefighters navigated around electrical wires down, and roof and wall collapses during the fight. By nearly 3:00 AM, the flames waved the white flag and gave up, succumbing to the three hour tour of large-diameter hose streams raining down, guided by spotters on the radio with a better vantage point. Ladder pipes, portable monitors, and 2-1/2-inch hand lines were all used in the deluge. The emergency was mitigated, but the work was not done.

Firefighters stayed on scene to overhaul the buildings and the debris pile for days following, while the pile continued to smoke. Plastics and other materials had melted throughout the pile, creating a water-resistant layer that protected hot spots under the surface from hose streams. LAFD tractor companies came out at first light the next morning to turn over the pile. A track loader (Caterpillar 953) and a wheel loader (Caterpillar IT28), driven by LAFD Heavy Equipment Operators, worked for days to continue overhauling the buildings and turn over debris, allowing firefighters to continue to put water on the materials to cool it off. Companies from all over the city rotated shifts during the days after, on "fire watch" to ensure nothing flared up and to continue to apply water while the tractors operated.

Fire investigators from the LAFD Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section obtained video evidence that enabled them to make the determination that the cause was accidental, due to spontaneous combustion. Near the end of the video from an internal surveillance camera, rags with painting-related chemicals on them (left on a bench) can be seen spontaneously combusting due to a chemical reaction. This is a sobering reminder to properly dispose of oily and chemical-soaked rags properly. Fortunately, no one was hurt during this Major Emergency fire.

At 8:42AM on March 10, 2022 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 720 S Ceres Ave in Downtown Los Angeles. The first arriving fire company found a one story commercial building with smoke showing.

As firefighters worked to gain entry into the building, the conditions worsened and they faced thick, black smoke, severely limiting visibility. Vertical ventilation conducted by the truck company opened up the roof to find heavy, pressurized smoke emanating from holes cut towards the back of the building. This smoke turned to fire and given the distance from where firefighters entered and the location of the fire combined with the amount of fire present, the incident commander, Assistant Chief Wade White, made the call to move the operation into a defensive mode.

All crews exited the building and came off the roof to rapidly deploy master streams. With multiple ladder pipes and large diameter hand lines flowing, firefighters quickly made progress as the white smoke in the sky dissipated.

The incident then transitioned back into the offensive mode and once the ladder pipes were shut down, an interior fire attack resumed, extinguishing the remaining pockets of fire.

Over 90 firefighters achieved a knockdown in 40 minutes with no injuries reported. The 4,536sq foot, nearly 100 year old building, housed an artist’s studio/metal fabrication business and was ‘red-tagged’ (deemed unsafe to occupy) by the LA Department of Building and Safety.

The LAFD Arson and Counter-Terrorism Section (ACTS) responded per protocol and is actively investigating the cause of the fire.

Title : Bagh-e Fin

Other title : Bagh-i Fin; Fin Garden

Date : 1571-1629 (construction) 1797-1834 (reconstruction)

Current location : Kashan, Esfahan, Iran

Description of work : The Bagh-e Fin was developed during the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas I (1571-1629) on the route to his new capital at Isfahan. Contained within massive enclosure walls and laid out on a series of low terraces, the garden follows a quadripartite chahar bagh scheme divided by the crossing of two watercourses which also line the perimeter of the garden. The crossing is marked by a two-story pavilion, while garden spaces and pathways fill the space. An additional watercourse, running adjacent to the central one, emanates from a small, but elaborately painted, pool house. The paintings date to the reign of the Qajar ruler Fath Ali Shah (1797-1834), who also replaced most of the earlier buildings. The water is delivered by a qanat (underground irrigation canal) and is forced through numerous fountains by gravity. Various hammams (bathhouses), residences, and a museum line the sides. It was declared a national monument in 1935 and has since undergone extensive repairs. (Sources: Hobhouse, Penelope. Gardens of Persia. Kales Press, 2004; Faghih, Nasrine and Amin Sadeghy. All the tunnels and bridges along the Princes Pier Railway have these excellent rusty plaques on the walls as you enter. 63 belongs to the Trafalgar Street Tunnel (also known as the Ann Street Tunnel). For the most part, the Trafalgar Street Tunnel is brick lined but at the portal, you can see that they've used stone. Many tunnels have this approach to construction and I know there's a good reason for it, I just can't think what that may be just now.

WEST HILLS - On Monday, June 28, 2021, LAFD firefighters responded to the 21900 block of West Parthenia Street at 5:04 AM for a structure fire. Flames could be seen coming from the second floor of a two-story single-family home. Thirty-two firefighters extinguished the flames in 24 minutes, without injury.

I found this at the edge of a recreation ground whilst looking for something else. At first I thought it was a railway tunnel air vent but there aren't any tunnels in the area. Also, whilst it seems circular, the other side is actually flat. So no idea, really.

Looking down the covered walkway of Merchants' Row. The storefront closest was originally the Opera House that was built circa 1840.

"The original building was a small one-story structure. It was widened and an upper story and the present storefront was constructed between 1850-1860. The building has been used as a photographer's studio, a U.S. Post Office, a general merchandise."

From the Historic Downtown Perryville Walking Tour pamphlet.

The second building seen in this section of the row was the Parks Dry Goods Store, circa 1840.

"Parks Dry good Store was built in 1840. The Parks Store was owned by William Huston Parks, the brother in law of Wallace Green, the local druggist. In 1870, Mr. Parks bought the store from another local store owner. A shrewd businessman, Mr. Parks opened three other stores in the 1800's, an unusual occurrence for that time. Including the Parks Store in Perryville, branches of the business also spread into Washington County and Mackville. During the earliest days of the store's existence, the store stocked boots, shoes, groceries and dry goods. Families from the surrounding areas would shop for supplies to last them for nearly the entire year. All would be bought in large quantity from nails by the keg to flour by the barrel. On March 18, 1918 Mr. Parks' daughter, Lora Parks, began to work for the store, but her father did not think it proper for young ladies to do public work. Despite her father's dissatisfaction with employing her, Miss Lora continued to work, and in July of 1930, following the death of her parents, she bought out the heirs and continued to own and operate the store until her own death in 1972. For over 100 years Parks Store was owned and operated by the same family."

With some leaves, it’s the fine structure I like. With this one however, the subtle colour gradient is just as nice.

A view of structures in geometric pattern in Kobe, Japan near Bay area

The structure coming in from below on the left is all that remains of the Polo Grounds Shuttle extension of the 9th Avenue El. A bit more existed a few years ago but it was taken down to make way for the new Yankee Stadium. Until about 1940, it extended across the Harlem River to the Polo Grounds and then down 8th and 9th Avenue to South Ferry. Later, the part from the Polo Grounds at 155th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan (north limit of Harlem) to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx was kept to allow baseball fans easy access to both stadiums and their parking lots. The tracks from the Shuttle rise and merge with the tracks of the Jerome Avenue line before the next station to the north.

When the baseball Giants stopped using the Polo Grounds in the late 1950s, most of the remaining structure was removed. The Polo Grounds was again used by the baseball Mets for their first few seasons (saw a twi-night doubleheader there around 1962). When Shea Stadium opened in Queens, the Polo Grounds was torn down and replaced by high rise public housing. The stub here was retained because it carries power and signal cable (visible near the upper left corner).

The Shuttle crossed the Harlem River on a bridge and then ran in a tunnel through a ridge on the way here.
