THE AGE OF FLOWERING PLANTS
ANGIOSPERM means "seed borne in vessel," while GYMNOSPERM means "naked seed," a reference to the lack of protective structure enveloping the seed. One reason that flowering plants were able to diversify so dramatically and spread during the Cretaceous and Cenozoic, or modern, the era was the evolution of new structures and tissues such as the carpel, a womb-like vessel that encloses angiosperm seeds and endosperm, a placenta-like tissue that nourishes the young plant as it develop within the seed, Today, angiosperm dominate terrestrial life on the planet. At an estimated 422,000 species, they compose by far the largest group of plants. They grow in greater range of environments, exhibits a wider range of growth habits, and display more variation in form than any living group of plants. In size, angiosperm range from tiny duckweed to eucaplytuses more than 330 ft (100 m) tall. The explosion of angiosperm diversity has gone hand in hand with the proliferation of insect, birds, and other animals that pollinate their flowers, disperse their fruits and seeds, and eat their leaves.

Another attempt at a Gasometer - this time with a nice streaky sky. Still a long way to go to get this right, but its a good start.

Chatham-Kent Fire Service, Station 19 Tilbury was tapped out for a structure fire at 24546 Poppe Line around 18:30 hours on April 12, 2014.
Upon arrival, command requested assistance from Station 17 Merlin and Station 15 Raleigh North for a well involved single family dwelling.
The fire originated on the exterior of the home by a barbecue and spread to the upper level of the residence.
Firefighters were not able to make an interior attack on the blaze due to fire conditions.
The damage is estimated at $280,000, and is being listed as accidental.

For the shader above, the texture image is repeated on each face of the box. If you want finer control over the orientation and position of the textures, you have to modify the UV coords above.

Parking structure and urban scene near the Highline Park in New York City
When in New York City... visit the Highline Park, as we did on this 2010 summer visit. For those who may not know, the Highline Park is a novel New York location, a park high above the streets that occupies the right of way of an old elevated railway. It is widely regarded as one of the most innovative public spaces in this city, and it really is a remarkable place.
It is also a great place to do photography. There are plenty of people subjects there, and there is all of the other stuff that is worth shooting in New York, plus the elevated perspective provides a lot of views that are different from those seen from street level. We've all seen this urban parking structures, which stack cars up several deep in order to make more efficient use of limited space. But we don't often see them from above, where the metal framing suggests planes that aren't visible from below but which connect in interesting ways with the angled lines and planes of the other nearby buildings.

A reconstructed structure in Hoa Lu, Vietnam's ancient capital. The place was abuzz with construction activities when I was there.

No. 3 Slip aka The BIG Store at Chatham Historic Dockyard, filled with all sorts of machines from the past.
The contents were interesting, but the building itself was the main attraction for me, it's a truly amazing sight to behold. Built in 1838 this Grade I listed building was the largest wide-span timber structure in Europe
Bamboo structure being installed several days before the Smithsonian Folklife Festival opens. Designed by artist Danny Yung, collaborating with Choi Wing Kei.
D22165. The Grade II listed bridge at Postbridge, a hamlet in the heart of Dartmoor, South Devon.
It was built in the 1780s, so is quite modern in comparison with the original packhorse river crossing which is a clapper bridge a little further downstream dating back to the 1200s; this is now a Grade II* listed structure.

One of two similar structures bordering the Juego de Pelota or ball court. Note the stone ring near the center of the structure. The players would attempt to pass the ball through this ring using their bodies, mostly by deflecting it with their hips.

A perplexing subject. Not yet managed to satisfy myself with a good shot of teh over-all trainshed roof at Temple Meads Station. This one comes close i think.
Incidentally the subject is the 1870's joint station train shed roof, and not the Brunel designed structure like many believe. This was designed by engineers (who i dont recall teh names of) and "embellished" with Gothic fancy bits by Sir Mathew Digby Wyatt who had done similar, but more successfully at London Paddington. ~The redevelopment of teh station was jointly funded byy the GWR, the midland railway, and the Bristol and Exeter railway. They were each responsible for different sections of work. It is little surprise then that the trainshed roof has a distinctly austere Midland Railway style and approach to its design. The station buildings are in the Bristol and Exeter Railway corporate "chunky gothic" they used at Weston-Super-Mare (Francis Fox) and the GWR were in charge of teh trackwork I believe.
My belief is that Digby Wyat's role was to try and coordinate the architectural bits into a single unified whole rather than sole design responsibility as sometimes suggested.
