Looking back at this, after 12 years, I'm reminded of the agonising I did about the repair and conservation of this Listed reinforced concrete structure. The station at Uxbridge was opened in 1938 and designed by Bucknell with Charles Holden, LT's consultant architect. The almost nave like train shed is a glorious feature, a 'mainline' version of the tube scale train shed at Cockfosters, and it a wonderful example of the expression in concrete of a structure - a modernist answer to exposed steel girders. That said, when the place was decked out and we got to see what was going on up here it was not a happy sight. Holden's third phase of stations for the Underground, starting in 1931/2, were earlish examples of the use of reinforced concrete and it is fair to say issues such as the depth of coverage of the reinforcing bars and the consistancy of the concrete mix was possibly not as fully understood as it might be now. Allied to rain water penetration and simple age, then the rusting, spalling and exposure of the reinforcing rods become a real issue. The repair also has to be carefully considered - exposure and descaling of in-situ bars is not easy and - the chemical composition of any replacement concrete can affect structure.
Here at Uxbridge we came close to almost demolition and reconstruction, and we did look at cathodic electrical control to help manage the potential between steel bars and surrounding fabric as this can initiate corrosion. Once all that has been sorted - aesthetically how do you present the repair? Traditionally you could argue for a 'patch' - it is honest and it becomes part of the patina of the building. Here, however, the original concrete shows the board marks and so - if we didn't replicate those on patches or if we re-treated whole beams, repaired areas and retained areas, what do we 'present' as the building's texture? Ooh - I manged all that? This picture, taken in June 2007, shows the first phase of identification and repair of spalled areas and the careful 'recipe' used. Later we did cementatious wash these beams with a textured finish to give a similar feel to the board marks originally found.
The Crittal glazing to the sides was also interesting. At first some people thought the panes had 'slipped' and these had been wedged up. Ah. The gap at the top was deliberate as this allowed air movement in the top of the structure - the shutting of the gaps had helped to create a dmap, humid microclimate in the train shed that hadn't helped the corrosion issues. Anyhow - a rare close up of part of a structure we don't often see.
