Conwy Castle, Rose Hill Street, Conwy, north wales LL32 8AY

Conwy Castle, Coordinates... 53.28°N 3.825556°W

Conwy Castle is a fortification in Conwy, located in North Wales. It was built by Edward I, during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1287. Constructed as part of a wider project to create the walled town of Conwy, the combined defences cost around £15,000, a huge sum for the period. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It withstood the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn in the winter of 1294–95, acted as a temporary haven for Richard II in 1399 and was held for several months by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr in 1401.

Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1646 when it surrendered to the Parliamentary armies. In the aftermath, the castle was partially slighted by Parliament to prevent it being used in any further revolt, and was finally completely ruined in 1665 when its remaining iron and lead was stripped and sold off. Conwy Castle became an attractive destination for painters in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Visitor numbers grew and initial restoration work was carried out in the second half of the 19th century. In the 21st century, the ruined castle is managed by Cadw as a tourist attraction.

Omiš (pronounced [ɔ̌miːʃ], Latin and Italian: Almissa) is a town and port in the Dalmatia region of Croatia. The town is situated approximately 25 kilometres (16 miles) south-east of Croatia's second largest city, Split. Its location is where the Cetina River (to the right) meets the Adriatic Sea.

Omiš was well known in the past by the Corsairs (i.e. pirates) of Almissa. Omiš Pirates were extraordinary sailors and shipbuilders, famous for their Sagittas (the Arrow), a special type of ship constructed for fast attack and even faster retrieval into the safety of the mouth of the Cetina River. Due to its position and the bravery of its inhabitants, Omiš was practically impregnable to all invaders. Even the Turks, who conquered all of the south-eastern Europe, and were stopped at the gates of Vienna, didn't manage to defeat Omiš.

At the peak of their power, Omiš Pirates were one of the most powerful and fearsome pirates on the whole Mediterranean Sea. Omiš Pirates ruled the Adriatic Sea for more then three centuries until in the year of 1420 the whole of Dalmatia, except Omiš, fell under rule the of Venetian Republic, the most powerful naval force of those times. Surrounded by the enemy and left completely alone, the Pirates of Omiš managed to defend themselves for 24 years. In 1444, Omiš fell into the hands of Venetia and that year marks the end of piracy on Adriatic Sea.

From the end of the 15th century, when the city fell to the authority of Venetian Republic, its name was the Italian Almissa.

Today, Omiš is best known for the traditional festival of the Dalmatian a cappella singing groups. During the Omiš Summer Festival various concerts and recitals are performed at the city's plazas and in churches.

Cregneash village, settled on an upland plateau overlooking the Calf of Man, was one of the last strongholds of the Manx language and customs which characterised the crofting way of life. It now stands as a cultural attraction and visitor centre.

The hiss of the train at the railway head

A pile of old metal, a radiant blur

Scars in the country, the summer and her

Always the summers are slipping away

This is Lóndrangar which is the remains of a crater on the south coast of the Snæfellsnes pennisula in western Iceland. It is perched on the cliff edge like a ruined castle.

This mighty fortress castle was built in the late 1400's.

Chepstow looked a very nice town, If I had more time I would have gone in the castle, but I also wanted to go to the river.

Beautifully preserved Chepstow Castle stretches out along a limestone cliff above the River Wye like a history lesson in stone.

There’s no better place in Britain to see how castles gradually evolved to cope with ever more destructive weaponry – and the grandiose ambitions of their owners. For more than six centuries Chepstow was home to some of the wealthiest and most powerful men of the medieval and Tudor ages.

Building was started in 1067 by Earl William fitz Osbern, close friend of William the Conqueror, making it one of the first Norman strongholds in Wales. In turn William Marshal (Earl of Pembroke), Roger Bigod (Earl of Norfolk) and Charles Somerset (Earl of Worcester) all made their mark before the castle declined after the Civil War.

These magnates and power-brokers were constantly on the move. Chepstow was just one residence in their vast estates – an impressive shell into which they would bring their gold and silver vessels, rich silk and brightly painted furniture.

The first written mention of the stronghold in Ląd comes from 1136. In the mid-thirteenth century, Mieszko III the Old settled here the Cistercian Order. For three centuries it was a German order, and from 1550 Poles resided in the abbey in Ląd. As a result of the partitions of Poland, Ląd was taken over by Prussia and the church property was confiscated. After the political changes in 1819 and the transition of Ląd to the Russian partition, the abbey was dissolved. In 1850 the monastery was settled by Capuchins, who were removed by the Russian authorities for helping the January Insurgents (1863-64). In 1921, after Poland regained independence, the Salesians were settled in Ląd. The Salesian Order and Seminary is still there today.

The monastery buildings are located on the right bank of the Warta River, and it includes the buildings of the former abbey, the church of Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas and the gardens of the monastery. The former abbey is an outstanding example of the Gothic and late Baroque style, closely related to the history of this region, and rebuilt many times. The church is a baroque temple, the construction of which began in 1651 and took almost 100 years. Earlier, an older church stood in this place, which was pulled down. The central nave and the dome were made in the years 1728–35 according to by Pompeo Ferrari.

Pierwsza pisana wzmianka o grodzie w Lądzie pochodzi z 1136 roku.

Najświętszej Maryi Panny i św.

We hiked a couple miles into the Dragoon Mountains toward the Cochise Stronghold. Wilbur is looking at the pinnacles that form the Stronghold. These mountains are where Cochise was born and where he sought refuge. He and his warriors emerged to wage guerrilla warfare against settlers and both the Mexican and American Armies. While he never lost a battle, Cochise chose to surrender in 1872 in exchange for a reservation for his people. He died of suspected stomach cancer two years later and his body was buried in an unknown crevasse in the Stronghold. The US Army abrogated the agreement with Cochise as a result of mining and ranching pressures. Geronimo continued the war but was eventually defeated and the Apache were exiled in Florida for 27 years.

Współczesna postać monastyru pochodzi z XIX w., kiedy to dzięki ofiarom społeczeństwa bułgarskiego i przy zgodzie władz tureckich wybudowano ogromny kompleks klasztorny. Mury grubości 2 m i wysokości 24 m nadają mu wygląd warownej twierdzy.

The Eastern curlew is listed as critically endangered in Australia, with global populations estimated to have declined by 80% in the last 30 years.

As a wading bird that travels across our earth, they rely on intertidal mudflats for food and habitat. But along their migration route, these mudflats are being developed or eroded, placing these beautiful birds at risk.

The walled seaside town of Tenby, on the western side of Carmarthen Bay, in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.

Tenby has a long history. It may have started its career as a Norse settlement but by the 9th-century it was a Welsh stronghold, who attractions were celebrated in a noble Welsh poem in praise of Dinbych-y-pysgod (Tenby of the Fishes).

The Normans seized Tenby and henceforth it become part of "Little England beyond Wales". The castle was built on the headland that juts out between the North Sand and the South Sands. The ruins still crown Castle Hill overlooking Tenby harbour with panoramic views across Carmarthen bay to Worms Head and the Gower Peninsula. Amongst the fragments walls is the Welsh national memorial to Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria, inaugurated by Prince Arthur in 1865.

Tenby become a walled town in the 13-century and the walls were strengthened in 1457 and again during the Armada scare in 1588. The line of walls is best seen from the South Parade where the main gate with its remarkable five-arched entrance, is well preserved. During the Civil War the town was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1644 and retaken in 1648 after defecting during the Second Civil War. It was twice bombarded from the sea. During the 17th and 18th centuries Tenby was a fairly busy little part.

Wealthy Victorians later provided the finance to develop the town into one of Britain's most attractive holiday resorts. They came to Tenby for the good of their health, but it was the birth of the coming railway in 1866 which saw the growth of tourists.

Tenby's 15th century Tudor Merchant's House is the oldest furnished residence in the town. Standing on Quay Hill, between the harbour and Tudor square, its authentic furniture and fittings recreate the atmosphere of the period and illustrate the manner in which a successful Tudor merchant and his family would have live. Three of the interior walls bear the remains of early Frescoes. Owned and managed by the National Trust, the house is open between March and October.

St Catherine's Fort lies on a small island just off Tenby's South Beach. It was built in the 1860s to protect the Pembrokeshire coast from possible invasion by France. There are gun embrasures down both the Northern and Southern sides. It was never called to action and was eventually sold and has been many things since including a zoo. Tide and weather conditions permitting, you can enter the Fort main hall/ground floor level. This is an impressive structure and is easily visible from the South Beach.
