Little butterfly seen on the meadow in Karkonosze :)

The large chequered skipper (Heteropterus morpheus) is a butterfly of the family Hesperiidae. The species can be found in isolated populations in Europe and east across the Palearctic to Central Asia and Korea. It is endangered in the Netherlands. The length of the forewings is 15–18 mm. The butterfly is on the wing from June to August, depending on the location. It prefers moist, forested, wet meadows and river edges, swamps and various water reservoirs. The butterfly has a very distinctive and attractive underside but a drab upperside (which is rarely seen, as it usually settles with wings closed).

Rojnik morfeusz (Heteropterus morpheus) - motyl dzienny z rodziny powszelatkowatych (Hesperiidae). Preferuje środowisko wilgotne, leśne, podmokłych łąk i skrajów rzek, bagien i różnych zbiorników wodnych. Wierzchnia strona obu par skrzydeł brunatnoczarna z małymi, bladożółtymi plamkami przy wierzchołkach skrzydeł przednich, lecz jest ona rzadko widoczna, gdyż motyle te najczęściej siedzą ze złożonymi skrzydłami.

Omegna, a municipality home to 15,000 people in the province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, is located north of Lake Orta, Italy's most romantic lake. A fascinating glacial lake, among the smallest and most characteristic in the north of Italy, 13 km long and 1.5 km wide at its widest point.

Lake Orta offers an enchanting landscape with lush forest vegetation dotted with small villages all along the Cusio territory, rich with historic and artistic value.

Omegna, with its beautiful mountains in the backdrop, reflects in the lake and extends along the Nigoglia, a canal that further north collects the waters of the Strona stream and then reaches Toce and Lake Maggiore.

I must say I love this photo a lot. It's a combination of the moment, composition, my feelings at that time, everything. Anyway it's in the box named "top shots" :)

The passenger train no. 77427 from Gdynia Główna to Chojnice has left Rytel Wieś passenger stop and it will soon arrive at Rytel station. In this moment the train is passing near a nice old Prussian brick building of the railway watchtower. On the head is one of Chojnice depot's flagship ships: "gagarin" ST44-1102 (this is the loco that had a "squint" created from different placement of tailights on one front; it's not this front on the picture). The consist is not typical here, these were the first years with the appearance of 1st class wagons as replacements for the 2nd class, so in this train we can see 4 out of 5 of the wagons are of 1st class, and I really don't remember if even one of them was the real first class. August 12 ,2003.

Around the northern borders of Bory Tucholskie, a few kilometers south of this place, exactly 14 years later (August 11/12, 2017) the greatest disaster in the history of the State Forests took place, i.e. a hurricane that devastated this area, and destroyed many houses and hundreds of hectares of forest.

[PL}

28 listopada ubiegłego roku pierwsze cztery zestawy DM90 za 1829 trafiły do nowego polskiego właściciela. Niestety potem był jakiś haczyk, bo niemieckie władze zakazały transportu zestawów bez furgonów hamulcowych. Dlatego wszystkie sprzedane zestawy były tymczasowo zaparkowane w Amersfoort, po czym zapadła cisza. Jednak w zeszłym tygodniu do Amersfoort przyjechały cztery wagony hamulcowo-sprzęgowe firmy Railadventure, aw piątek cztery kolejne zestawy, teraz między wagonami sprzęgowymi, przekroczyły granicę.

Surfers near Prasonisi cape. There were a lot of them :)

Prasonisi is a cape of the island of Rhodes, at the southern-west part of the island. During summer time, and when water levels are low enough, Prasonisi is a peninsula attached to Rhodes. The southernmost tip of Prasonisi contains the Prasonisi Lighthouse. During the winter time, and when water levels are high enough, Prasonisi becomes an island. Prasonisi is noted to be a good place for windsurfing and kitesurfing due to predictable and reliable winds with certain qualities (not gusty, constant direction and during particular times of the day). From one side of the cape there is the Aegean Sea with good waves and views for advanced surfers. From the other side, there is the Mediterranean Sea with flat water which is better suited for beginners. The area has its high season for tourists in July and August and the flat side of the water becomes very busy. The closest Greek village is Katavia; however, there is a purpose-built settlement on Prasonisi that contains motels, convenience stores, restaurants, and windsurf rentals which are open seasonally.

The Mermaid Monument (Polish: Pomnik Syreny) sits dead centre in Warsaw’s Old Town Market Square, and is a symbol of the city, as a mermaid with a drawn sword has been the coat of arms of the city since at least the mid-14th Century.

The monument was created in connection with the construction of the first modern waterworks in Warsaw in 1851–1855, designed by Henryk Marconi . Water fountains built in the most prominent places of the city were decorated with figures of mermaids, tritons and dolphins.

The zinc sculpture designed by Konstanty Hegel was cast in the Warsaw factory of Karol Juliusz Minter and unveiled on 7 August 1855. Hegel presented the siren as a melusine emerging from the foamy waves, with a spirally twisted tail, holding a sword in her raised right hand and a shield in her left. The nearly two-meter tall figure had harmonious shapes and classic facial features, but some criticised the aesthetics of the sculpture.

In 1928, as part of the campaign to beautify the Old Town Square, the swimming pool and water fountain were dismantled, and the statue of the Mermaid travelled around various less distinguished locations, which probably saved it from the Germans’ intentional destruction of Polish cultural treasures after the 1944 Warsaw Uprising collapsed. As it had been located by the Vistula, the frontline for some months in 1944-5, it needed repair after the war, including the patching of fifty bullet holes.

In the post-War decades, it travelled around various Warsaw locations, and was a repeated target for vandals. It was finally brought back to the Old Town Market Square in 1999, partly for its own protection.

During the German occupation, neither of the two Warsaw Mermaid monuments was included on the list of monuments intended for demolition

In May 2008, the statue was replaced with a copy in the Old Town Market Place, and the original sculpture by Konstanty Hegel was moved to the Historical Museum of the Capital City of Warsaw.

Warsaw’s Old Town Market Place (Polish: Rynek Starego Miasta) is the centre and oldest part of the Poland’s capital. Immediately after the Warsaw Uprising, it was systematically blown up by the German Army. After World War II, the Old Town Market Place was restored to its pre-war appearance.

Rynek Starego Miasta is the true heart of the Old Town, and until the end of the 18th Century it was the heart of all of Warsaw. It originated in the late 13th Century, at the same time that the city was founded. Here the representatives of guilds and merchants met in the town hall (built before 1429, pulled down in 1817), and fairs and the occasional execution were held. The houses around it represented the Gothic style until the great fire of 1607, after which they were rebuilt in late-Renaissance style and eventually in late-Baroque style by Tylman Gamerski in 1701.

The district was damaged by the bombs of the Luftwaffe during the September 1939 Invasion of Poland. The ancient Market Place was rebuilt in the 1950s, after having been destroyed by the German Army after the suppression of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Today it is a major tourist attraction.

The current buildings were reconstructed between 1948 and 1953, to look as they did in the 17th Century when it was mostly inhabited by rich merchant families. The Warsaw Mermaid, a bronze sculpture by Konstanty Hegel, has stood in the centre of the square as the symbol of Warsaw since 1855.

Names of 18th-century Polish parliamentarians are used for the four sides of this vast (90 by 73 m) square:

* Dekert’s Side (Strona Dekerta), the north side (numbers, 28–42), named after Jan Dekert, which houses the Warsaw Historical Museum.

* Barss’ Side (Strona Barssa), the east side (numbers, 2–26), with the Adam Mickiewicz Museum honoring the 19th-century Polish poet.

* Kołłątaj’s Side (Strona Hugo Kołłątaja), the west side (numbers, 15–31).

* Zakrzewski’s Side (Strona Zakrzewskiego), the south side (numbers, 1–13).

The square is maintained by Wario Wojciech, who can often be seen in traditional dress, consisting of a red suit and a curved sword.

Warsaw Old Town is, as one might surmise, the oldest portion of the city, and contains numerous historic buildings, mostly from 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Royal Castle, city walls, St. John’s Cathedral, and the Barbican. The settlement itself dates back to the 13th Century, and was granted town privileges c. 1300.

During World War 2, the Old Town was badly damaged by the Luftwaffe in 1939, and then almost completely destroyed in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. It was subsequently rebuilt with enormous attention to recreating much of what had been there before. The project was the world’s first attempt to resurrect an entire historic city core and was included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1980. The reconstruction efforts were again recognized in 2011 when all its documents and records were added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme.

„Wóz gaśniczy”

10.08.2018

Koksownia dębieńska miała kilka wozów gaśniczych – jeden pracował a pozostałe stanowiły w danym momencie rezerwę.
