This is my third encounter with this Barred Owl this week. It was perched on a limb about eight feet high on a tree that could be touched as one walked the trail.

I finally got a reasonable shot of a Great Gray Owl this winter. Glenn Parker and I spent the day driving south west of Edmonton in a hopeful search. We were heading back to the city via a route neither of us had traveled before, and we found this one. We had to struggle through about 100 meters of knee deep snow and over a fence to get close. This owl let us get close and never did fly from its high perch. It was a very gray and snowy day and the light source was behind the owl, so this is quite high key.

After a co-worker mentioned seeing an owl "often" I had to go investigate. This lovely Barred owl lives in a very suburban neighborhood park. Just off a heavily paved path he was well camouflaged in the thicket. I suppose he is used to people walking by without being seen. However, the moment he saw I had stopped to look at him he took off. I watched him from a distance and he settled back down. A passing Accipter flew into the tree and started to harass him...and off he went again. If I go to visit him again I will be very careful to pretend not to see him. I imagine hundreds of people a day walk by him and they never know he is there :)

MC-130J 05941 did a couple of touch and goes at Lossie today then back to Mildenhall. Light was pretty poor with light drizzle but it's better than nothing.
Taken at a park in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on May 15 2013. I rounded a corner and found myself face-to-face with this Barred Owl. After about an hour, the bird spotted a squirrel and went from perch to perch trying to catch it, so I managed to photograph it in many different spots and poses.
