Tawny Owl couple of which the female is biggerr, so I suppose the upper one would be female.

Not as close as I would like, but it was a treat to see it in an open perch with light on it.
According to the Breeding Atlas of Birds of Alberta, the Great Gray Owl is a bird of the undisturbed boreal forest. It is found in coniferous, deciduous, and mixed woodlands, usually near water sources such as muskeg, marshes and wet meadows. It hunts the forest margin in burned clearings and natural forest openings.
"While the Great Gray Owl appears to be the largest of our owls it only weighs about a kilogram under its fluffed-out feathers. Its perfectly circular facial disc indicates an advanced sense of hearing... It is the only species among the eleven in genus Strix that is not primarily nocturnal, its particularly small eyes being an adaptation for daylight hunting." (1992)

Tawny owl mum keeps an eye on her chicks calling quietly to warn of any danger and to let you know she's seen you and won't hesitate to attack if you get to close to her babies, the owlets leave the nest as soon as they can and before they can fly, scrambling into the trees and bushes in an act known as branching, they sit quite openly and are easily approached, it's easy to think they've been abandoned but the parents are invariably watching and if you look at those talons you can see it's not wise to get too close.
