The barred owls have fledged, left their nest and have now arrived on the boulevard behind the house.. There are 3 owlets, as they grow stronger they will fly over my house and head for the river park where they will have access to more food. Taken at 10:30 at night I endeavored to not take a front on view as I was using my flash.. First time I have taken a bird picture at night

For many this past year has been difficult in a world of conflict and we trust that 2023 may be a much more peaceful year with stability, peace and happiness....Barred Owl

Barred Owl

The Barred Owl (Strix varia), also known as the Northern Barred Owl, Striped Owl or, more informally, Hoot Owl, is a North American large species of owl. A member of the true owl family, Strigidae, they belong to the genus Strix, which is also the origin of the family's name under Linnaean taxonomy. Barred owls are largely native to eastern North America but have expanded their range to the west coast of North America where they are considered invasive. Mature forests are their preferred habitat, but they can also acclimate to various gradients of open woodlands. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, but this species is an opportunistic predator and is known to prey upon other small vertebrates such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as a variety of invertebrates.

I watched this wild Great Gray Owl fluff up its feathers several times. Each time I thought it would fly, but then it would settle back down on its perch. Look at the talons!!!

Following the guidelines that Rob Fowler suggested on Calbirds, I kept a good distance from the Great Gray Owl while it hunted. But then, and true to Rob's prediction, the owl flew to within feet of me and perched on a fence post. There is just no reason to crowd or approach this amazing and handsome bird. It might just come check YOU out.

Der Waldkauz (Strix aluco) ist eine mittelgroße Eulenart.

Since I had already posted a Great Gray Owl for my Canada 150 project, I didn't post this one taken on May 17.

This Owl was captured and banded. I positioned myself for the release. Its first wing flaps pushed it toward me. but it veered away almost instantly. I was lucky to get this shot at the moment of release. I started shooting at 9 fps while it was still in the hand of the bander. (Spray and Pray)

The great gray owl is found in the northern coniferous forests of Europe, North America and Asia. There they hunt birds and small mammals. A great gray owl is 59 to 85 cm long, where the females are slightly larger than the males.

Barred owl w/Owlet

(Strix Varia)

My third Barred Owl this week, all found on Lake Ontario's shore at the southern edge of Prince Edward County. This species is not migratory, but they do disperse south in the late fall/early winter. I reckon this one found itself over the lake at night and struggled back to the last trees at the Point Petre Wildlife Conservation Area.

Given the arrangement of branches, I did not have any choice but to photograph the bird against the blown out sky.

Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa)

Les Cèdres, Québec, Canada

This was such a great experience. The snow falling made it even more special, though we were once again lacking sunlight. The only disturbing fact was hearing constant gun shots from afar. I was told me it was probably a shooting range, certainly hope so.

Special thanks to Jo for her kindness in sharing info on how to find this amazing creature. Also, special thanks to Mike Streicher (mikestreicher) for his kindness and help.
