yesterday was quite calm (as in the whether) and moody (as in the colour of the sky) for the whether, the whole day was quite cold. the sun was striving for its right to shine, struggling the grey clouds that was covering sydney.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Peale's building renovation. 100% of the ticket sales for the "Strive" film screening benefited our 1814 structure, the oldest purpose-built museum in the United States. We were pleased to present a number of other activities, including hand-cut silhouettes, virtual- and augmented reality exhibitions, as well as a short documentary produced by the Baltimore National Heritage Area about the G300 Squeegee Kids. Bio: JoAnn Fields is incredibly active and an engaged advocate providing a voice for Filipino-Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders and communities of color in our region.
JoAnn Fields is the Director of the Filipino Resource Center and the Government and Public Affairs Director at the Asian Pacific Islander Initiative in San Diego.
She has the responsibility for helping individuals and community-based organizations navigate government agencies and connecting resources to those in need.
Prior to joining the API Initiative and launching the Filipino Resource Center, she worked in multi-levels of government that include the offices of Congresswoman Susan Davis, California State Assembly Member Dr. Shirley Weber, San Diego Council President Pro Tem Anthony Young, Chula Vista Council Member Patricia Chavez and National City Mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis.
JoAnn strives to bring her 25+ years of community organizing experience and
connections to advocate and uplift the voices for the underserved in San Diego.
JoAnn is a 2nd generation Filipino American. Both of her parents are from Asingan, Pangasinan, Philippines. Her father Francisco Lagula retired from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Post Office. Her mom Vicky is a retired Registered Nurse of 40 years at Scripps Chula Vista.
JoAnn Fields is far from being typical a Filipina. She is a proud single mother of 4 adult children and 5 grandchildren children.
A few of her accomplishments include:
Renaming & Recognition of Infrastructure
• The Itliong-Veracruz Bridge naming: formerly the Woodman Street overpass on SR-54 was renamed to honor Filipino American labor activists. This serves as a symbol of Filipino-American history being made visible in public space.
Mobilization during crisis: During COVID-19, she helped organize resource distribution and set up a Filipino COVID-19 task force.
Advocacy beyond COVID: Natural disaster & recovery. Fields co-organized the San Diego Loves Maui coalition; led donation drives; met with state/federal leaders to secure/discuss aid.
• Led 20 volunteers from San Diego to Lahaina Maui bringing much needed supplies and personal support that included Ilocano translation.
• Participation in larger scale policy advocacy: pushing for permanent authorization of community development / disaster recovery grant programs in Washington DC and San Diego.
• Continued role in advisory and visibility platforms:
• Stop API Hate Townhall with San Diego Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, AAPI leaders at the SDPD Multi-Cultural Storefront
• Stop API Hate Virtual Townhall with the San Diego Union Tribune, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders Community
• AAPI Mental Health Townhall with CA Senator President pro Tem Toni Atkins at the Chinese School
• Domestic Violence Awareness Townhall with District Attorney Summer Stephan and Marichris Tabalanza Drouaillet, sister of Maya Millete and the San Diego Union Tribune
• Mexipino Heritage Celebration
• Pinay Empowerment Summit launch with Julia “Jhigs” Legaspi and Rachelle Caco

JoAnn is a proud instigator. She launched the first Filipino American Heritage Festival aka FilAm Fest where she shut down a portion of Paradise Valley Road in the heart of Paradise Hills for a countywide Filipino American celebration. *Oct 2, 2005 - San Diego Union Tribune
She later formed the Lumpia Club luncheon to provide a platform for Filipino American professionals and the community at large to network and discuss important issues with San Diego’s decision makers over a fabulous Filipino lunch that of course includes Lumpia!
Along with Dr. Gil Ungab they formed the Filipino Covid-19 Taskforce to provide a voice for the under-represented Filipino community to address the lack of access to Covid-19 testing, treatment, tracking and resources.
Covid-19 magnified the lack of resources and access to life saving programs and service which led to the formation of the Filipino Resource Center which is currently a virtual center but has already provided assistance to many people in need.
That included sparking an investigative report made by Maya Srikrishan, Voice of San Diego.

More recently, she founded the Annual Filipino American Friendship Festival to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Manila signifying the United States relinquishing sovereignty of the Philippines and therefore declaring the Republic of the Philippines as an independent country.
JoAnn is a coalition builder and works in a various capacities:
She is co-founder of the Annual Dr Martin Luther King Jr Community Festival and Neighborhood Parade at MLK Park.
Served as Chairperson of the Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Breakfast at the San Diego Convention Center. *This is the first event I worked alongside Assemblymember Alvarez
Launched the Latino Filipino Heritage Luncheon aka Mexipino Heritage Celebration.
Currently Co-Coordinator of the National City Salute to Veterans Parade and Festival and ACE (Activating Cultural Economic) Opportunities Initiative.
She recently launched Unapologetically, JoAnn an online platform to showcase Filipino culture, history and accomplishments globally.
JoAnn’s motivation is to utilize God’s given talents of the gift of gab and organizing for her family, community and next generation of leaders.
