The Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) today rewarded 14 public schools with $1 million for exceptional achievement as part of the state’s new Strive HI Performance System.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Hawaii State Board of Education Chairman Don Horner, Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi and other state officials attended a ceremony at Red Hill Elementary – one of the top-performing schools – to present individual awards ranging from $20,000 to $95,000.
As they strive to convey their ideas to someone else, to convince the other, student writers think increasingly carefully about word choice, syntax, evidence, structure and the development of an argument.
Comments they leave one another at the beginning of the semester are often of the "Hey, great post" "Yeah, I think that too" variety. With modeling from me, with examples from previous semesters of effective blog discussions assigned, and with their own growing engagement with the class and the course, they begin to extend their comments, and then sometimes go back over to their own blogs and post an entry as a long response to a classmates post. Just as I do on my blog (another way I model is by slow-blogging right alongside them, remember).
Unlike a forum, these posts are searchable, and are archived, and most important, they can be linked to in other posts; thus they become connected to the larger movements of the course, of several iterations of the course. Students learn from the conversations of other students, of students from previous semesters and weave these discussions into their own every richer tapestry of thinking and learning.
