My other expensive hobby

Little metal strings wrapped and messed. Tried to show the texture and complicity.

I like the slightly disparate designs of these not quite finished condos which are located near Toronto's waterfront just West of Spadina.

On May 2 2013, Ms. Shakura M. Ismail, Elizabeth High School string teacher hosted an enlightening musical event entitled “A Strings Night Out” located at Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy. The intent of this program was to build rapport and foster string education throughout secondary education. During this event teachers were able to showcase their ensembles’ talents as well as collaborate and share creative ideas.

The auditorium consisted of creative energy and excitement as each school took center stage. First to perform was Mrs. Cho-Murphy, director of the string program at Dr. Orlando Edreira Academy School #26 who performed “Beale Street Strut”, by Doug Spata and “Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt. Dr. Albert Einstein Academy School # 29 String Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Sean Glennon, performed “Ode to Joy” by Beethoven and arranged by Mr. Glennon. Finally, the Elizabeth High School Orchestra, under the direction of Ms. Shakura M. Ismail performed works from Haydn, Lindsey Stirling and Bert Ligon. Additionally, the EHS Orchestra featured five soloist; Juvetssy Rizzo (violin), Ana Valentin (violin), Madeline Romero (violin), Ghobrial Yacoub (viola) and Kyo Wan Kim (Cello). The evening ended with an energetic collaborative performance of the “American Fiddle Medley” with all three schools up on stage. Can you imagine hearing over 100 string players performing on a single stage? This was a memorable event!

The ultimate goal is to make this an annual event and to continually lend support throughout the upcoming years to all the string ensembles throughout the school district.

The sanxian (Chinese: 三弦, literally "three strings") is a Chinese lute — a three-stringed fretless plucked musical instrument.

This was taken at Lembongan Island, one of Bali's sister islands in Indonesia.

My old lady is one of the many seaweed farmers that occupy the island and she was nice enough to show my aunt how to string the weeds together. My cousin rushed to take a picture, and I shot this just after she had taken her photo. I just love the old lady's expression. She was very happy to have her picture taken.

I chose the title because I felt the strings almost acted like a connection between two people from different lands, and it just seemed to fit in this case.

A tradition of giving loads of blessing strings is very Thai. Congratulations!
